"Is it what you suspected?" the first man, the silent man, asked. The leader cocked his head and locked eyes with Colleen. His monstrous, amber glare peered deeply into hers, violating her very psyche in some unexplainable way. Suddenly he grinned, revealing straight, gleaming teeth. `Oh what big teeth you have!' Colleen instantly thought. "Oh yes," he murmured as a giddy amusement rose from deep within him. "Yes, she carries his scent." Colleen gulped thickly and her blood ran cold. Somehow she knew he was talking about her father. "Besides," the leader went on, leaning in closer to her face, "I would recognize those eyes anywhere." After all, they were the exact same eyes he had hunted so many years before.

Actress Colleen Dewhurst (1926-1991) is best remembered for her seminal characterizations in the plays of Eugene O'Neill, which highlighted a career on stage, screen, and television that spanned forty years and earned her two Tony awards and four Emmys. Writing about her Broadway triumph as Josie Hogan in A Moon for the Misbegotten (1973), critic Clive Barnes said she spoke O'Neill as if it were being spoken for the first time--and not for the first time in a theater . . . but for the first time in a certain New England farm, on a certain September night in 1923. Though known for her portrayals of tragic heroines, Dewhurst also played comic roles and played Murphy Brown's mother for three seasons in that television series. At her death, she left an indelible mark in American theater, but, curiously, little written commentary beyond reviews and journalistic articles. This study documents her diverse performance and directing careers, with information also on her personal life and her participation in political and philanthropic causes, including two terms as president of Actors' Equity. An extensive productions section provides data on her major and minor roles in all media, including credits, runs, synopses, and review citations. This is supplemented by an annotated bibliography of major reviews and other writings, a list of awards, a biographical study, and a chronology of her life and career, all carefully cross-referenced and indexed. This book adds to the growing number of studies that organize essential resources on performance for effective research use.

Although best known for The Thorn Birds, her blockbuster family saga set in her native Australia, Colleen McCullough is a versatile novelist who has written in a variety of genres. This is the first full-length examination of her work. It highlights her versatility and her refusal to be confined to any one genre or type of writing, even though that refusal has lost her part of the wide readership she gained with ^IThe Thorn Birds^R. DeMarr discusses, analyzes, and evaluates each of McCullough's eight novels in turn, relates it to the genre to which it belongs, and compares it to her other work. This study also features a biographical chapter and a chapter which discusses the variety of genres in which McCullough has written.DeMarr shows how McCullough's romances (Tim and The Ladies of Missalonghi) and her other novels which make heavy use of romance elements (The Thorn Birds and An Indecent Obession) differ dramatically from each other. She also compares McCullough's novels of ideas (A Creed for the Third Millennium^ and the three recent historical novels set in ancient Rome, The Masters of Rome series). Each novel or series is discussed in a separate chapter, which contains sections on plot development and structure, character development, setting, style, and themes. Each novel is also examined from an alternate critical approach, such as feminist, allegorical, anti-generic, and deconstructionist criticism, to widen the reader's perspective. A complete bibliography of McCullough's work, general criticism, and listings of reviews of each novel complete the work. This work will be of particular interest to public and school libraries.

What do cartoonist Al Capp, actor Robert Mitchum, and singer John Mayer have in common? They are all from Bridgeport, a large industrialized city perched on the Pequannock River in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Originally home to the Paugusset Indian Tribe, the small fishing and farming community grew into a town, incorporated in 1821, then a city, incorporated in 1836. Famed circus promoter P.T. Barnum, born in Bethel, CT., adopted Bridgeport as his home, and over the years the city gave birth to flying Frisbees, S & H Green stamps, and Sikorski helicopters to name a few. Affectionately nicknamed "The Park City" in honor of their public park system, her industrious citizens made significant contributions to the state, nation, and world as part of their communal legacy. One of those talented people was a young girl named Colleen Joan Bartram and this is her story.

Colleen Moore (1899-1988) was one of the most popular and beloved stars of the American silent screen. Remembered primarily as a comedienne in such films as Ella Cinders (1926) and Orchids and Ermine (1927), Moore's career was also filled with dramatic roles that often reflected societal trends. A trailblazing performer, her legacy was somewhat overshadowed by the female stars that followed her, notably Louise Brooks and Clara Bow. An in-depth examination of Moore's early life and film career, the book reveals the ways in which her family and the times in which she lived influenced the roles she chose. Included are forewords written by film historian Joseph Yranski, a friend of the actress, and by Moore's stepdaughter, Judith Hargrave Coleman.
