Constructing Authors and Readers in the Appendices Vergiliana, Tibulliana, and Ouidiana
The Augustan period in Rome was a golden age for poetry, and also the age in which the cult of the author began in the west. By examining some early poetic understandings of what it might have meant to be Vergil, Ovid, and Tibullus, Constructing Authors and Readers in the Appendices Vergiliana, Tibulliana, and Ouidiana explores what those authors meant to near-contemporaries, and what the construction of authorship they were a part of meant to the later western tradition. Constructing Authors and Readers in the Appendices Vergiliana, Tibulliana, and Ouidiana takes its starting point from the Appendices attached to three major Augustan poets, exploring how their different conditions of production, and the differences between their authorising authors, result in different notions of what an appendical text 'ought' to contain. So, for instance, Vergil's biography leaves ample room for 'juvenilia', while Ovid's does not; the Tibullan appendix explicitly engages with a wider poetic community. Moving beyond questions of forgery and deception, some chapters ask how we would be able to know the difference between texts of genuine and of disputed authorship, given that most of the stylistic features that distinguish authors are replicable. Other chapters make the case for re-evaluation of poems that have been neglected or disparaged, and still others make sense of individual works in their likely context of composition. The volume is the first to treat in conjunction the majority of the appendical works ascribed to Vergil, Ovid, and Tibullus, and to draw connections across corpora.
Constructing Authorship in the Work of Günter Grass

Constructing Authorship in the Work of Günter Grass

Rebecca Braun

Oxford University Press

This book traces a longstanding concern with issues of authorship throughout the work of Günter Grass, Germany's best-known contemporary writer and public intellectual. Through detailed close-readings of all of his major literary works from 1970 onwards and careful analysis of his political writings from 1965 to 2005, it argues that Grass's tendency to insert clearly recognisable self-images into his literary texts represents a coherent and calculated reaction to his constant exposure in the media-led public sphere. It underlines the degree of play which has characterised Grass's relationship to this sphere and himself as part of it and explains how a concern with the very concept of authorship has conditioned the way his work as a whole has developed on both thematic and structural levels. The major achievement of this study is to develop a new interpretative paradigm for Grass's work. It explains for the first time how his playful tendency to manipulate his own authorial image conditions all levels of his texts and is equally manifest in literary and political realms.

The Mighty Ant: An anthology of Short Stories for Seniors: Just like the little ant, whose size is disproportionate to its strength, s
Setting aside just a few minutes to read a story to a loved one can create wonderful moments that might be otherwise lost to silence. Also, many, who love to read, often find it difficult to follow a complicated plot. Some complain that they can't read a full length story because they forget the details halfway through. The Mighty Ant began as an idea to reach out to seniors or others who might be experiencing or caring for those with cognitive dysfunction, while finding a way to contribute funds from the proceeds of the book sales to North Carolina's Chatham County Council on Aging. Submissions of short, easy to understand stories were requested from writers (both professional and amateur) who wanted to participate in this project. As editor and contributor I reached out to writer's groups, neighbors, and social media not knowing what would happen. The submissions came from people living all over the world. They spoke in their own voices with fiction and non-fiction contributions. The only rules were to compose a story of less than 750 words for people suffering from dementia, memory impairment, and those who had compromised attention spans. Too many words can be confusing for these people, while simple words and ideas can be comforting and spark reminiscent conversation. We hope that you will enjoy reading this and sharing it with your loved ones.Printed in large print for easy reading.

Onora O'Neill

This collection of essays brings together the central lines of thought in Onora O'Neill's work on Kant's philosophy, developed over many years. Challenging the claim that Kant's attempt to provide a critique of reason fails because it collapses into a dogmatic argument from authority, O'Neill shows why Kant held that we must construct, rather than assume, the authority of reason, and how this can be done by ensuring that anything we offer as reasons can be followed by others, including others with whom we disagree. She argues that this constructivist view of reasoning is the clue to Kant's claims about knowledge, ethics and politics, as well as to his distinctive accounts of autonomy, the social contract, cosmopolitan justice and scriptural interpretation. Her essays are a distinctive and illuminating commentary on Kant's fundamental philosophical strategy and its implications, and will be a vital resource for scholars of Kant, ethics and philosophy of law.
