The Story of Leeds

The Story of Leeds

David Thornton

The History Press Ltd
2013
nidottu
A richly illustrated history that explores every aspect of life in Leeds. This new history of Leeds covers all the main political, social and economic developments of the city: The Harrying of the North devastated the surrounding area in 1069; the Civil War saw a battle fought in the town itself; cholera and typhus epidemics raged in the nineteenth century; the building of the Middleton Railway in 1758 established the oldest railway in the world; and Richard Oastler, the Factory King, launched the campaign for the Ten Hour Bill in the Leeds Mercury. Due emphasis is given to the place of the wool textile industry, the principal industry until the twentieth century. The story is brought right up to date, as are recent changes in the townscape. An intriguing look at this great city’s remarkable history.

Domesday Names

Domesday Names

The Boydell Press

First-ever full index to people and place-names in Domesday in their original forms. Presented here is the first complete, all Latin index to the Domesday Book, comprising two Indices Personarum and one Index Locorum. The main Index Personarumcontains all references to people: named individuals, title-holders, and `institutions' (collections of persons functioning as individual landholders in the Domesday text); individuals are listed alphabetically under the initial letter of their forename, while `institutions' are entered under the place where they are located. The second, shorter Index Personarum lists all people alphabetically under their surname. In both indexes the exact Latin forms given in Domesday Book and all variant spellingshave been retained. The Index Locorumlists all place-names in Domesday, except where linked to an `institution': the names of administrative units have been incorporated alphabetically into this index with the appropriate term added after the name. Cross-references to other counties have also been included. Again, the Latin form in the Domesday text is given exactly. References are to the 1783 Farley and more recent Phillimore editions. Dr K.S.B. KEATS-ROHANis Director of the Linacre Unit for Prosopographical Research; DAVID THORNTONis Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Bilkent University, Ankara.

Fleeing a neighborhood bully, a brother and sister stumble into an ancient quest and now they must escape far more powerful enemies. This exciting story engages young readers as they follow Nomi and Emmet as they go adventuring through the Bible--unlocking secret riddles and following the path of the Serpent Slayer. As readers journey through time and place with Nomi and Emmet, they'll see how God conquers evil, slays the Serpent, and rescues his people. The Serpent Slayer and the Scroll of Riddles will engage young readers while the Bible comes alive in their hearts and minds. Far from being a dry, dusty book of instructions, the Bible tells the most stunning story--of true love, a lost loved one, a fearsome enemy, and a costly rescue. Young readers will encounter the story of Scripture up close and personal along with life-changing truths they'll never forget. Written by Champ Thornton and Andrew Naselli and illustrated by Dana Thompson, this story, on one level, follows the adventures of tween siblings as they magically observe firsthand events in the Bible--getting up close and personal with the Hero of heroes, the Serpent Slayer. On a broader level, it engages readers with a biblical way to live in a hostile world. The Serpent Slayer and Scroll of Riddles is a time travel adventure with a twist--children learn biblical, theological themes as they travel through God's Word.

RealTime Physics is a series of introductory laboratory modules that use computer data acquisition tools (microcomputer-based lab or MBL tools) to help students develop important physics concepts while acquiring vital laboratory skills. Besides data acquisition, computers are used for basic mathematical modeling, data analysis, and simulations. There are 4 RealTime Physics modules: Module 1: Mechanics, Module 2: Heat and Thermodynamics, Module 3: Electricity and Magnetism, and Module 4: Light and Optics.

The authors of RealTime Physics Active Learning Laboratories, Module 1: Mechanics, 3rd Edition - David Sokoloff, Priscilla Laws, and Ron Thornton - have been pioneers in the revolution of the physics industry. In this edition, they provide a set of labs that utilize modern lab technology to provide hands-on information, as well as an empirical look at several new key concepts. They focus on the teaching/learning issues in the lecture portion of the course, as well as logistical lab issues such as space, class size, staffing, and equipment maintenance. Issues similar to those in the lecture have to with preparation and willingness to study.

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) are designed to enhance conceptual learning in large (and small) physics lectures through active engagement of students in the learning process. Real physics demonstrations are shown to students, who then make predictions about the outcomes on a prediction sheet, and collaborate with fellow students by discussing their predictions in small groups. Students then observe the results of the live demonstration (often displayed as real-time graphs using computer data acquisition tools), compare these results with their predictions, and attempt to explain the observed phenomena. ILDs have been demonstrated through physics education research to enhance student learning of physics concepts. ILDs can be used within the traditional structure of an introductory physics course. All of the printed materials needed to implement them are included in this book. Intended Courses: · Department: Physics · Course Name: Algebra Based or Calculus Based Introductory Physics · Course Level: Freshman/Sophomore

Taking risks is how humans learn. It is how humans have always learned. A person sees a problem, takes in the available information, and tries a solution. It is in that process - whether the goal is understanding a Shakespeare play, figuring out an algorithm, or writing a theory of history - that engaged learners make breakthroughs, be those breakthroughs individual, group, or societal. In this book, three experienced practitioners describe how to re-imagine teaching spaces - conventional schools - as learning spaces, spaces where risk is encouraged, celebrated, and actually taught in every area of endeavor: from how, where, or if to sit, to how to find the right pathway to learning. In bringing the stories of a central office Innovation director together with an elementary teacher and administrator and a veteran secondary teacher leader, Education Reimagined: A Space for Risk demonstrates how fundamental change is possible in any school
