Voices: A Doris Stokes Collection
An omnibus of two of Doris Stokes' extremely successful books. VOICES IN MY EAR was originally published by Futura in 1980 and immediately became a bestseller. MORE VOICES IN MY EAR in 1981. We still get many telephone calls and letters asking where the books can be obtained. Doris Stokes was a celebrated medium who confounded sceptics by the uncanny accuracy of her readings. In Australia she filled the Sydney Opera House and was mobbed in the streets. In America 'Charlie's Angels' was moved from its primetime slot to make way for her. In Britain she filled the Albert Hall, and radio phone-ins caused blocked lines and an avalanche of mail. Doris Stokes possessed an amazing gift - exceptional psychic powers that over the years of her extraordinary life brought joy and comfort to thousands of people.

Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression in the farmlands of Eastern North Carolina, Hattie Wellington was not supposed to live past infancy. Even in her mother's womb death stalked her life. Had she not lived as her mother expected, her story might've been the inconsequential end of a sick baby girl born to poor, uneducated, alcoholic, migrant sharecroppers. Neighbors would've talked about how the mother pulled the blanket over the dying baby's head so she wouldn't have to watch her die. Then, the story would've wafted through time as the requiem for destiny snatched from the bosom of hope. However, in her candid account of the first twenty one years of her life in Stokestown, Hattie Wellington tells the story of not only surviving sickness, but of overcoming extraordinary childhood challenges- poverty, child labor, sexual abuse, hunger, Jim Crow Laws, substandard education, dishonest landowners, and nasty predators. She sharecropped and worked domestics alongside her mother, picked cotton, pulled the sucklings from tobacco and cucumbers from the vines. She enjoyed a fairly typical childhood for that day and time for poor black families; except, behind closed doors, there were burdens no child should ever have to bear. So, when her dreams were shattered from within, she became a high school dropout, married and became a teen mom. Had she given up, it would've been better that she had died in the womb, but she persevered against almost insurmountable odds to realize her dream of a better life. At forty-eight, with eleven children graduated from high school, she earned her GED. At fifty-four, she received her first college degree and went on to enroll in Howard University. At seventy-two, she was accepted at Spelman, her dream college. There she was featured in the book project: Their Memories, Our Treasures: Conversations with African American Women of Wisdom, 2004.The story of her commitment to family values and her perseverance can be read in Tales out of School, by Patrick Welsh, 1986-condensed for Reader's Digest the same year.At seventy-seven, she voted in the historic election of the first African-American President of the United States of American and at eighty-one she voted for his reelection. As a daughter born from her sacrifices, I want readers to know that what doesn't kill you, will build faith, character and an enduring legacy of hope for those who dream.

Who built the megaliths, those massive stone structures ranging from tombs to standing stones that date back to over 4000 BC? Why were they built? How were the enormous stones transported and erected? Were these strange, sacred stones used as temples or tombs, sculptures or houses? Covering the best-known sites - Avebury and Stonehenge in England, Carnac in France and Knowth in Ireland - and also less famous examples in Scandinavia, Malta, Egypt and Spain, this book considers the special significance - architectural, scientific, religious and cultural - of these enigmatic Neolithic stone structures.
Classic Tales of Horror: A Collection of the Greatest Horror Tales of All-Time: The Call of Cthulhu, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dori
Ranging from the macabre to the supernatural, the collection of stories found in Classic Tales of Horror contains some of the most influential horror and dark fiction books of all-time. Included in this horror anthology are: The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft Dracula by Bram Stoker Frankenstein by Mary Shelley The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe The Turn of the Screw by Henry James A bit more about each book: The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft recounts Francis Wayland Thurston's investigations into a mysterious otherworldly cult that worships the slumbering god Cthulhu. The published story was regarded by Robert E. Howard (the creator of Conan) as "a masterpiece, which I am sure will live as one of the highest achievements of literature. Mr. Lovecraft holds a unique position in the literary world; he has grasped, to all intents, the worlds outside our paltry ken." Dracula by Bram Stoker tells the story of the vampire Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread his undead curse, as well as the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and a woman led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula has spawned many undead spinoffs in literature and film and is synonomous with modern horror. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Considered by some to be the first example of science fiction, Frankenstein has generated an entire genre of literature, films, and plays. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde tells the story of the adventures of a hedonistic youth after having his likeness captured in a painting...and the paintings reflection of those adventures. Considered too amoral for publication in its original form, Oscar Wilde famously fought for artists' rights to publish and art for art's sake in his works defense. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson relates the story of a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the common language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next. The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is the tale of an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of his sanity while simultaneously describing a murder he committed. The Tell-Tale Heart is widely considered a classic of the Gothic fiction genre and is one of Poe's most famous short stories. The Turn of the Screw by Henry James tells the story of a governess caring for two children at a remote estate who becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted. The novella has been adapted numerous times in film, stage, and television and has enjoyed much debate by academics on the true nature of the evil depicted in the story.

A compelling and visceral story that touches the depths of human hearts. Based on a true encounter by the author, H.O.WARD, presents his character Doris as a homeless vagabond on the streets of London in 1966, where she has the misfortune to fall ill and taken to hospital by her street friend Harry. It is Harry who continues the story of Doris, a tender and caring Queen Alexandra Nurse, telling of her journey through military training in Inverarary, Scotland, her experience of war torn Italy in Anzio, and her romance in Florence, before her forced return to London, England. As with all lives, they should not be judged on the merits of the surroundings in which the person is first encountered, but by the complete understanding and quality of the person, if they should then be judged at all. Read what can only be described as a sensitive walk through the life of a lovely lady, with its highs and heart-wrenching lows.

In the ebullient spirit of Ocean’s 8, The Heist, and Thelma & Louise, a sensational and entertaining memoir of the world’s most notorious jewel thief—a woman who defied society’s prejudices and norms to carve her own path, stealing from elite jewelers to live her dreams.Growing up during the Depression in the segregated coal town of Slab Fork, West Virginia, Doris Payne was told her dreams were unattainable for poor black girls like her. Surrounded by people who sought to limit her potential, Doris vowed to turn the tables after the owner of a jewelry store threw her out when a white customer arrived. Neither racism nor poverty would hold her back; she would get what she wanted and help her mother escape an abusive relationship.Using her southern charm, quick wit, and fascination with magic as her tools, Payne began shoplifting small pieces of jewelry from local stores. Over the course of six decades, her talents grew with each heist. Becoming an expert world-class jewel thief, she daringly pulled off numerous diamond robberies and her Jewish boyfriend fenced the stolen gems to Hollywood celebrities.Doris’s criminal exploits went unsolved well into the 1970s—partly because the stores did not want to admit that they were duped by a black woman. Eventually realizing Doris was using him, her boyfriend turned her in. She was arrested after stealing a diamond ring in Monte Carlo that was valued at more than half a million dollars. But even prison couldn’t contain this larger-than-life personality who cleverly used nuns as well as various ruses to help her break out. With her arrest in 2013 in San Diego, Doris’s fame skyrocketed when media coverage of her astonishing escapades exploded. Today, at eighty-seven, Doris, as bold and vibrant as ever, lives in Atlanta, and is celebrated for her glamorous legacy. She sums up her adventurous career best: “It beat being a teacher or a maid.” A rip-roaringly fun and exciting story as captivating and audacious as Catch Me if You Can and Can You Ever Forgive Me?—Diamond Doris is the portrait of a captivating anti-hero who refused to be defined by the prejudices and mores of a hypocritical society.
