Raising Cougars and Bears (Parenting Daughters - A Father's Perspective): Shaping and Sharpening Skills for Your Daughter's Survival and Success
Raising Cougars and Bears (Parenting Daughters - A Father's Perspective) is a personal and practical account about raising daughters in modern day society. I have spent my entire life cultivating the seeds for fatherhood. I am blessed to have 27 years of experience as a full time and devoted father. This book reinforces the importance of a supporting family environment and how education (formal and informal) ultimately impacts our children. Since I am the father of girls, my parenting skills and perspective are naturally focused on girls. By no means do I mean to diminish the importance of rearing boys, I would whole-heartedly agree that rearing boys is just as demanding and challenging. As a result, the parenting challenges and practical solutions discussed in this publication are not limited to fathers and daughters but also includes sons, step-children, foster and adopted children. My perspective of fatherhood is based on three principles: biblical concepts; the guiding values, principles, and morals that were instilled in me, and my application of life experiences in which I encountered the realities of fatherhood. In this book, I want to share my experiences as a father. My goal is to help young men who maybe contemplating becoming a father one day and to help young men who have already entered into fatherhood. Likewise, I want to also help young woman gain greater insight into understanding and helping the fathers of their future and current children to become the best role models they can be. As parents, more specifically fathers, we must equip ourselves to meet the challenges associated with fatherhood in today's society. We must do so for the betterment and benefit of our children, their futures, society as a whole, and our legacies. It doesn't matter if it's called a family, clan, den, or pride; fathers were created to be providers, protectors, and leaders to those where a family bond exist. I believe that in spite of our differences and no matter who you are, reality is as fathers, we want and desire the same things for the children we love. Those same things include love, happiness, success, security, safety, good health, and opportunity.

In a fiercely fought provincial election in 1919, a new political movement came to power in Ontario. The victorious party was the United Farmers of Ontario. Its leader, Ernest Charles Drury (1878-1968), became the province's eighth premier. Idealistic agrarian reformer, staunch temperance man, free-trade advocate, Simcoe County 'yeoman,' and progressive populist, Drury was a man of the people and of the land, inevitably tagged the Farmer Premier. In this biography, Charles M. Johnston follows the career of Drury through agrarian activism and partisan politics, and explores the personal and ideological forces that directed him. Drury began his career in the farm movement as leader of the Dominion Grange and Farmers' Alliance. He went on to act as the driving force behind the Canadian Council of Agriculture, and then co-founded the UFO in 1913. Activist though he was, Drury as a premier sought no dramatic departures from established political procedures. When others of his party did, notably J.J. Morrison and W.C. Good, Drury disavowed their class-consciousness and their formula of group government. Instead he advocated the creation of a people's party, based on what he called Broadening Out – an appeal to all citizens, regardless of class, occupation, or political stripe, who were seen to share the farmer's desire for a more humane, moral, and progressive society in the wake of the First World War. The question of Broadening Out was a controversial one within agrarian ranks, and it led to dissension among the leaders. This weakening of the party combined with the shrewd tactics of Howard Ferguson's Tories to bring about the Drury government's downfall in 1923. During its four years in power it had enacted some solid social welfare legislation, but its defeat was resounding. With it came the effective end of Drury's political career. Johnston offers a revealing study of a brief chapter in Ontario history and of the man whose principles and ideals shaped it.
Thimble Theatre & the Pre-Popeye Comics of E.C. Segar
More than a decade before he created the world's most famous cartoon sailor, Elzie Crisler Segar began his comics career in the movies. He drew cartoons for silent movie theater slides, the Charlie Chaplin comic strip, and a daily strip about Chicago's movies and entertainment. Then, in 1919, he penned his own "small screen" creation for the newspapers, Thimble Theatre, where Popeye was to be born a decade later. This comprehensive volume features examples of all of E.C. Segar's early comics and illustrations, with over 100 pre-Popeye Thimble Theatre Sunday pages including the complete run of the famed Western desert saga, a series that rivals his later work in superb art, storytelling, and humor.Newly revised and expanded, this new printing contains ten additional pages plus a 1920s-style Sunday comics section insert paying tribute to Segar and his comic creations featuring Charlie Chaplin's Comic Capers and Popeye's "The Jeep."Text and illustrations offer an in-depth history and commentary on the life and work of E. C. Segar by historians Paul C. Tumey and Jeet Heer, and best-selling author and journalist Michael Tisserand. Thimble Theatre is an essential part of any comics lover's library.
