Every culture has its own trickster character. The Southern Appalachian Mountain trickster is Jack, whom readers may know from traditional stories like "Jack in the Giant's Newground" and "Jack and the Bean Tree." The stories in Trickster Jack, which focus on the shenanigans of Jack and his older brothers, are actually tall tales emerging from Reid Gilbert's tricky imagination. Set in the Southern Appalachians around the end of the nineteenth century, these tales describe actual activities of the time, such as making a wooden wagon with white oak rounds for wheels, fetching water from wells with windlasses, and using outdoor outhouses.Trickster Jack introduces those readers from outside the Appalachians to some of the ways and manners of that region, while reacquainting Appalachians themselves with their own heritage. Regardless of where you hail, there is plenty in this whimsical collection to delight and entertain you.
Comic ReliefLimericks have been identified with the Irish County of Limerick, although apparently started elsewhere. One anonymous reader in NY wrote after reading Gilbert's earlier book, "I read the whole book three times and laughed and laughed. Thanks for writing it." Comic relief is aptly named. Even in the heaviness of Shakespearean tragedies there is a need for relief. Limericks seem to fit the bill for that function in the contemporary political scene.E. Reid Gilbert grew up in the tobacco hills of North Carolina, before pursuing academic studies: Brevard College (AA English) Duke University (BA Sociology) Southern Methodist University (MTh Theology) Union Theological Seminary (STM Religious Drama) University of Wisconsin (PhD Asian Theatre) He then pursued several careers: Methodist and Unitarian Ministry College and University Teaching Mime Performer and Instructor Theatre Actor and Director After retiring from those professional pursuits he started writing: Trickster Jack (Tales of the Appalachian trickster, Jack) Shall We Gather at the River (Romance set in the mountains in the 1870s) What Matters (119 poems) Twelve Houses of My Childhood (Stories of early life) Valley Studio: More Than a Place (Stories of Mime Studies and Performances) Several theatre and Film scripts. He claims that throughout the years he's probably been following the gypsies, which his Mamma had warned him about at the age of four.

Seldom do you find anyone or anything as faithful as Man's Best Friend. As Christians, we are called to be faithful. Faithful to our Savior, faithful to our faith, faithful to our Master. We should be faithful in all areas of our lives so that Christ receives the glory. We can learn a lot from our dogs. They can teach us love, obedience and faithfulness. So let me share in your devotional time how to become more like our Lord by observing our loyal pets and best friends, the family Dog
Leslie Hoppe, OFM, has had a distinguished career in biblical studies. He is known for his work on the book of Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomistic History, but his interests have ranged over many areas of the Scriptures, including the prophets, biblical geography, archaeology, history, and biblical perspectives on poverty. In his writing and research, he has broken new ground and advanced the discipline time and again. For many years, Hoppe served as the editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, and he oversaw the publication of numerous articles that have impacted the study of both the Old and New Testaments. A capstone to Hoppe's illustrious career, his editorship of the CBQ is reflected in the design of this volume, which comprises works by scholars of both testaments. The chapters here range from Genesis to the Gospels and Pauline letters. Leslie Hoppe's colleagues have given him a fitting tribute, a Festschrift with breadth as well as depth.

Stories in verse and rhyme targeted for tweens, but designed to keep adults amused as well. Eight stories of Polly that will appeal to fans of The Addams Family or The Munsters. Four tales of the Land of Fae that should appeal to anyone with a sense of whimsy - or red hair. Most 'Polly' and 'Fae' tales are 5 or more pages long, so they have time for real plot lines to develop. These stories are ideal for reading aloud to groups of kids. Many shorter verses that document the 'living with baby' experience - perhaps most appreciated by newer parents, but accessible for children. Plus a hodgepodge other other pieces heavily slanted toward the tongue-in-cheek end of the spectrum.
