Revolutionary Britannia?

Revolutionary Britannia?

Edward Royle

Manchester University Press
2000

Europe was swept by revolution in the period from 1789 to 1848. Britain, alone of the major western powers, seemed exempt from this revolutionary fervour. The governing class attributed this exemption to divine providence and the soundness of the British Constitution. This view has been upheld by historians for over a century. This book provides students with an alternative view of the potential for revolution and the resources of conservatism in early industrial Britain which challenges many of the common assumptions. Incorporates quotations from primary sources to give the reader a critical sense of why revolution was taken seriously by people at the time. Shows how the revolutionaries were defeated by the government's propaganda against revolutionary sentiments and the strength of popular conservatism.

Praise for the first edition:'Royle calls on an impressive range of materials (supported by an excellent bibliography) to offer a judicious review of most of the issues currently confronted by social historians. His agenda contains both traditional and novel elements [...] all are presented with admirable clarity and balance. [...] A volume which shows an astonishing command of such a wide range of material will long prove essential reading.'Times Literary SupplementThis popular work provides an in-depth historical background to issues of contemporary concern, tracing developments over the past two and a half centuries. It promotes accessibility by adopting a thematic approach, with each theme treated chronologically. Major themes are chosen partly by their importance to an understanding of the past and partly by their relevance to students of contemporary Britain - rather than by imposing current fashions in historical study on the past. Thoroughly revised, the third edition of Modern Britain reviews and brings up to date the content to take account of developments since 1997 and reconsiders emphases and interpretations in light of more recent scholarship. It incorporates new currents in historical writing on matters such as the language of class, the position of women, and the revolution worked by the Internet and mobile technologies. Modern Britain is vital reading for students of history and the social and political sciences.

The Role Of Culture And Communication In Mediation 2nd Edition
I am exceedingly delighted to write a Preface to the second edition of this important and compelling book, The Role Of Culture And Communication In Mediation 2nd Edition by Edward Dzerinyuy Bello. Culture has been defined as the aggregate or sum total of the values, mores, worldviews, and philosophy of life of a people. This means that culture is critical to the construction of the identity of a people as it crystallises their hopes and aspirations, affirms their distinctiveness as a group and offers them a foothold in life. Culture, therefore, constitutes the bedrock or foundation on which a people or group builds and finds meaning to their essence and existence. Culture is also strategic to communication which is language in action. We are rational beings because we communicate intelligently and coherently. Language is the veritable vehicle through which culture is communicated and transmitted from generation to generation. This is what separates humanity from other lesser creatures and demarcates the boundary between nature and culture. Both culture and communication play a key and decisive role in mediation which is the art of exercising prudent judgement with the aim of resolving conflicts and enhancing mutual understanding. This book covers these key themes of culture, communication, and mediation in a salutary and commendable manner. Through the book, the author Edward Dzerinyuy Bello invites readers to contemplate the power of culture in communication and mediation as a strategy for enriching the discourse and providing actionable solutions to disputes and conflicts which may arise due to differences in perception, knowledge, and cognition. This is a book that is a valuable addition to the corpus of literature on the subject. It titillates our interest and understanding of the range issues and concerns inherent in the cultural imagination. The chapters have been well laid out and treated with candour, remarkable skill, and powerful insight. This is a book wh

In relation to various cultural theories, The Role Of Culture And Communication In Mediation by Edward Dzerinyuy Bello, outlines the crucial role of culture and how its impact is evident within communication during mediation. It offers a practical approach of having mediators remain conscious of their thoughts and actions while attentively facilitating an unbiased communication between the parties involved. Most importantly, however, are the theoretical views and models borrowed from various writers such as Edward T Hall, Eric Berne, Schulz von Thun as authenticated in the lives of the author and others highlighted in the book. Whether a student, traveller in an unknown country, researcher, practitioner, parent or just any person, each individual will mediate at different levels through life's journey. This book contains practical suggestions and points to think about that will enable embracing similarities in differences and contribute to individuals valuing humanity. Ntombekhaya Tshabalala, PhD
Role Engineering for Enterprise Security Management

Role Engineering for Enterprise Security Management

Role engineering secures information systems. It ensures that every user has the right permission to access just the right information, computers, and networks. When hundred or thousands of computer users must be assigned their own individual access permission, role engineering saves significant time and money while protecting data and systems. This first-of-its-kind book illustrates the entire role engineering process, from project planning to deployment and verification. In addition to explaining technical aspects, the book emphasizes business benefits by showing how to manage risks and costs. Practitioners get proven techniques that define roles and ensure proper assignment of permissions and roles to users. The book also shows how to verify that roles comply with security policies.
Alexander Herzen And the Role of the Intellectual Revolutionary
Alexander Herzen (1812-70) was the most outstanding figure in the early period of the Russian revolutionary movement. Lenin claimed him as a forerunner of the Bolsheviks, and Soviet scholars have sought to establish his latent sympathy with Marxism. In the west on the other hand, he has been seen as a precursor of Solzhenitsyn, the personification of protest against all forms of oppression. Dr Acton provides a compelling intellectual biography. The focus is on the years between 1847 and 1863. Herzen's ideas are set in the context of those political developments and dramatic private experiences that affected his outlook. His profound faith in human nature and in the inevitable triumph of socialism was undermined not only by the failure of the revolutions of 1848, but even more deeply by personal catastrophe - the discovery of the infidelity of his beautiful wife Natalie. This dual blow, Dr Acton shows, had a decisive impact upon Herzen's approach to Russian problems. It lay at the root of the ambivalent attitude he adopted towards peasant revolution in the critical period of Emancipation.
Japan's New Global Role

Japan's New Global Role

Edward J. Lincoln

"Since 1980, Japan's international economic position has undergone a historic transformation that is now having significant consequences for Japan, the United States, Europe, and other countries around the world. In this book, Edward J. Lincoln analyzes the major economic changes that occurred in Japan during the 1980s, including macroeconomic shifts, financial deregulation, yen appreciation, rising labor costs brought on by long-term demographic changes, and technological success.Since 1945, the Japanese have shied away from active involvement in most of the complications and problems of the international community. Now, however, a surge in outward foreign investment, particularly direct investment, has involved the nation, more intimately with the outside world than in the past. As a result, Japan has had to cope with some difficult new questions: how to participate meaningfully in the work of the major multilateral economic institutions and the United Nations, how to expand or change the country's foreign aid program, how to take part in the intentional debate on environmental policy, and how deeply to become involved in solving the world's political problems.Lincoln asserts that overcoming the string of insularity and passivism for the years since 1945 will not be easy. He proposes several specific policies that would lead Japan toward a more productive international engagement and suggests that these changes will also serve the objectives of American foreign policy. The 1993 elections and the new coalition government in Japan offer a greater possibility of domestic change; the mood of the nation has shifted away from continued acceptance of the policies of the past. There is now a greater opportunity for the American government to engage in a productive dialogue that can encourage Japan toward a more open and active global role."
