Born on the Orkney island of Wyre in 1887, Edwin Muir settled in various parts of Europe during the first half of the twentieth century - from Glasgow, to Austria and Czechoslovakia throughout to 1920s, 1930s and again after the war. Muir's poetry bears oblique witness to the most traumatic years and events of this century, and is haunted by the symbolic 'fable' which he longed to find beneath the surface 'story' of mere events, as he came to terms with his own nature amidst the terror and confusion of the European maelstrom. As Seamus Heaney has written: 'Muir's poetic strength revealed itself in being able to co-ordinate the nightmare of history with that place in himself where he had trembled with anticipation . . . His simultaneous at-homeness and abroadness is exemplary.'

Rather than emphasising the Christian, transcendental elements in Edwin Muir's writing, this critical study focuses on the 'single, disunited world' - a search for meaning and values in the unstable, mundane world. Taking the reader chronologically through all his major works, it analyses the significance of Muir's Orcadian background, the influence of German Romanticism on his early poetry, and his European interests in general. The stylistic maturity of his later poetry is given particular attention, as is the relevance of Scotland to his whole work.Although Muir has traditionally been seen as standing apart from MacDiarmid's 'Renaissance', this challenging new study shows how he did in his own way fulfil its aim by taking Scottish Literature and criticism back into the mainstream of European culture.

This is the story of a literary marriage. It tells of the partnership between Edwin and Willa Muir, two intellectuals from small town Scottish backgrounds and their discovery of Europe in the years after the first and second world wars. It tells us about the cultural, social, and political issues of those dynamic and difficult years and much else, in intimate detail, about their own personal struggles. Edwin Muir was to become a leading poet in the twentieth century Scottish literary renaissance, but to make a living the couple also worked as translators of modern German literature, including key works by Hermann Broch and, most famously, Franz Kafka. They were intimate with many of the leading writers of their time, both at home and abroad, and these contacts, and their travels in Europe gave them a special and sometimes painful insight into the trials of the twentieth century. Dr Margery McCulloch's study draws on personal travel and a wealth of new sources from private correspondence, publishers' archives, the recollections of friends, and the diaries, unpublished journals, and autobiographical memoirs of Edwin and Willa themselves. This is the fullest account of the couple's life and times together during a long and loving marriage, not without its difficulties as Willa struggled to find proper acknowledgement of her translation skills, and space for her own creativity as a novelist in the shadow of her own ill health and Edwin's growing status as a major modern poet.

The Chartered Mercantile Bank is one of the constituent banks of the huge Hongkong and Shanghai bank. This study charts its first 40 years as one of the pioneering banks of the Far East. The Chartered Mercantile became the leading exchange bank in India and South East Asia whilst always retaining its head office in the pivotal London market. Based upon meticulous research using a particularly rich set of banking archives, the book describes the complex political and financial circumstances on the subcontinent during the bank's early years and introduces the personalities in the Indian business and London banking worlds who guided the infant institution. The volatility of local markets is analysed, with portraits of the banks and merchant houses which did not survive the many financial crises in the East also included. This book will do much to remedy the lack of existing research into international finance, and Eastern banking in particular, in the 19th century.
