Josephine is a saga about greed, power, servitude, and survival, balanced against the misery of living in a western Pennsylvania coal patch. Timeless, poignant with flawed, unforgettable characters and set during a most prosperous time for the few, Josephine's efforts to shape a life that sets her afire are thwarted time and time again by forces around her. Although she rebuffs society's mandates and wants to carve out her own path, circumstances compel her to marry Joseph, one of the many miners battling for his dignity and welfare. Josephine and her friends, Annie and Emma, struggle to survive and help other women to do the same as heartache reaches into every home. They are pushed and pulled by tragedies, the constant threat of poverty, and by a society of imposed limitations. Although Josephine's story does not end tied up in a pretty bow with the reader saying she slayed the dragon, they can say she had an indomitable spirit; she tackled the challenges that came her way; and made opportunities for herself, her family, and the women around her.
Dogs are forever. They are not to be tossed aside because they don't fit our version of a perfect dog. They kiss away our tears, cuddle next to us when we are sad, greet us with excitement and high spirits, even if we are in a bad mood, and stay by our side in times of trouble and tears. They know very well the meaning of the words, "till death do us part." Based on true events that happened to Elizabeth and her husband, David, Samson and Delilah, is a heartwarming story about two very different, adorable beagles, and how they each captured their guardians' hearts and formed a bond that would be cherished always. This journey shows how we love and protect those closest to our hearts. With humor and humility, the author reveals what it's like to open your heart to not one, but two loveable beagles. The story also shares the challenges encountered in living with two dogs in a New York City apartment and the joy of having two quirky dogs like Samson and Delilah. While this book is candid and sincere and sad and funny, it focuses on the issue of giving dogs a second chance. Sharing the antics and adventures of Samson and Delilah, this book shows how to work through the challenges that may arise in that most valuable and rewarding of relationships. Most importantly, it will also inspire people to take action to rescue a dog-maybe two.
Samson and Delilah return to the pages with their human companions, Elizabeth and David, plus the twenty foster dogs they welcomed into their home. The fosters come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, some with heart-warming stories and others tragic and heart-wrenching. You will meet sweet Bonnie, the puppy mill dog; Flossie and Bailey, laboratory beagles; crazy Tillie and gentle Millie; two adorable sisters, Lady and Angel; and LittleBit who talks, just to name a few. Poignant, uplifting stories of twenty foster dogs, plus the continued antics of Samson and Delilah, will make you smile, warm your heart, and possibly bring tears to your eyes.

This "exemplary social history" (Kirkus Reviews) is the first full-scale account of Central Park ever published. Elizabeth Blackmar and Roy Rosenzweig tell the story of Central Park's people—the merchants and landowners who launched the project; the immigrant and African-American residents who were displaced by the park; the politicians, gentlemen, and artists who disputed its design and operation; the German gardeners, Irish laborers, and Yankee engineers who built it; and the generations of New Yorkers for whom Central Park was their only backyard. In tracing the park's history, Blackmar and Rosenzweig give us the history of New York, and bring to life larger issues about the meaning of the word "public" in a democratic society.

This book features five peer-reviewed reviews on ensuring the welfare of broilers. The first chapter considers the range of factors that pose a significant threat to broiler welfare, focussing on the impact of fast-growing broilers and high stocking densities. The chapter reviews how these factors have been addressed within the European Union through the inclusion of two case studies. The second chapter builds on research covered in the first chapter and details the welfare issues that can arise as a result of intensively reared broiler flocks. The chapter discusses the development of leg disorders and lameness, as well as contact dermatitis. The third chapter reviews the major welfare issues related to the management of broiler breeders, including feed and water restriction, excisions and the potential for management strategies to have transgenerational effects. The fourth chapter similarly addresses the welfare issues that can arise in the housing of broiler breeders, but instead focusses on the impact of these factors on increased levels of aggression and consequent aggressive behaviour, such as feather-pecking.The final chapter explores the use of group-level technologies to monitor and automate poultry welfare assessments of broilers, focussing on the use of visual images retained from CCTV and video, as well as sound and temperature sensing.

Was gibt's Neues in der Kita Fliegenpilz?
Finding her way through the labyrinthine plots that surrounded the court, she had to live by her wits, surrounded by betrayal and suspicion, not knowing who to trust with her desire to be queen, or her desire to be a lover...
Charged with bigamy and faced with the prospect of living out her days in exile on the continent, this biography of 18th-century beauty and bigamist Elizabeth Chudleigh recounts how her courage and zest for life still allowed her to charm Catherine the Great and live in outrageous luxury.
Sarah Bradford's Elizabeth is the definitive biography of the Queen, revealing the real woman behind the public figure The Queen lived through nearly a century of immense change and upheaval. Her own family experiences, a mixture of happiness and crisis, weddings and divorces, and, in the case of Diana, violent death, have been lived in the glare of tabloid headlines. More than 2 billion people watched the wedding of her grandson Prince William to Catherine Middleton in 2010 shortly before she made the first State Visit to Ireland by a British monarch for 100 years. Our world has changed more in her lifetime than in any of her predecessors': and before her death, the Queen remained a calm presence at the centre, earning the respect of monarchists and republicans. History has pictured Elizabeth I as Gloriana, an icon of strength and power -- and has focused on the early years of her reign. But in 1583, when Elizabeth is fifty, there is relentless plotting among her courtiers -- and still to come is the Spanish Armada and the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. We have not, until now, had the full picture. This gripping and vivid portrait of her life and times -- often told in her own words (and including details such as her love of chess and marzipan) -- reveals a woman who was insecure, human ('You know I am no morning woman'), and unpopular even with the men who fought for her. This is the real Elizabeth, for the first time.
Elizabeth Taylor is known internationally as one of the most beautiful and talented women ever to grace the silver screen. She has won two Academy Awards and starred in over sixty films. She is just as well known for her tempestuous personal life, marrying eight times and suffering through innumerable health problems. A cultural icon, she has been written about before . . . but never like this. This moving book traces for the first time Elizabeth's journey through the dark and often lonely world of a fame unparalleled in the 1960s and 1970s, a time during which alcohol and drugs played a major part in her life. It would be with her fifth (and sixth) husband Richard Burton (with whom she made twelve movies, including Cleopatra) that she would learn life lessons about love and loyalty that would inform the rest of her life and, finally, be the catalyst for her recovery from alcoholism in the 1980s. This book also details her philanthropic work as an AIDS activist in the 1990s as well as her stunning success as a business woman today (with a multi-million-dollar fragrance). Based on years of research, this is not just a star's biography . . . it's an unforgettable woman's story.
College rule (also known as medium ruled paper) is the most common lined paper in use in the United States. It is generally used in middle school through to college and is also popular with adults. This is a good choice for teen or adult notebooks and composition books (known as exercise books outside the US).
