Hadde han vært av høyere rang, hadde navnet hatt flere bokstaver, som Eppe, Eppen eller det helt optimale Eppenep Epp vet godt at han ennå kan oppleve større skam; han kan degraderes og ende opp med Ep eller bare E. Epp er konform, ganske humørløs, og bruker tiden på å skrive rapporter om hva som utspiller seg i løpet av en dag, som de faste ritualene med å koke egg, lage knekk og å mate sin kjøttetende plante. Epps rake motsetning er naboen, Lem, som drømmer om et horisontalt fellesskap og vil ha Epp med på en sammensvergelse; å rive ned veggene mellom pensjonistenes hybler og gjøre opprør mot systemet. Ein Hauptgrund daf r liegt mit Sicherheit in der unzureichenden Quellenlage. Die meisten Originaldokumente wurden durch einen britischen Gro angriff auf Potsdam in der Nacht vom 14. auf den 15. April 1945 zum gr ten Teil zerst rt. Vornehmlich in "Das Buch vom Deutschen Freikorpsk mpfer" von Ernst von Salomon und den daraus entstandenen "Darstellungen aus den Nachkriegsk mpfen deutscher Truppen und Freikorps," die vom Heeresarchiv ausgewertet und ver ffentlicht wurden, finden sich als Quellen zu verstehende Akten, Unterlagen, Wahlplakate, Erfahrungsberichte und dergleichen mehr. Eingesetzt von Reichswehrminister Gustav Noske (SPD) zur Zerschlagung demokratiefeindlicher Aufst nde im Inneren des Reiches, wurden die meisten Freikorps in der Nachkriegszeit ab dem 9. November 1918 gegr ndet und von der Weimarer Regierung in der Folge als legitime Milit rs anerkannt. Obwohl die Freikorps der Demokratie nicht sehr nahe standen, trugen sie im Wesentlichen zur Stabilisierung der Weimarer Republik nach innen und au en bei. Die Aufl sung vieler Freikorps musste, mit dem Einsetzen der Zielvorgaben des Versailler Friedensvertrages bereinstimmend, ab dem 31. Januar 1920 beginnen, da ab diesem Zeitpunkt dem Heer nur noch 100.000 Mann angeh ren sollten.
