A single line, wrought in metal, becomes a human profile. Turn it slightly and the character of the profile changes, from angry to pensive, from surprised to sullen. Made of the humblest material, recycled wire hangers, Gilles Collette's Porte-manteau sculptures combine wire, light, space and the viewer's vantage point to form quasi-kinetic portraits. From the primordial line emerges a multitude of shapes and expressions, delicately delineated in space, forming the thin separation between absence and fullness of form. Expressive portraits from one viewpoint, some of the figures become abstract from another: arabesques in light and shadow, dancing figures, fantastic flora. Some portraits change genders from one shot to the next; others emerge from what appeared to be a straight line...

Why think? Not, according to Gilles Deleuze, in order to be clever, but because thinking transforms life. Why read literature? Not for pure entertainment, Deleuze tells us, but because literature can recreate the boundaries of life. With his emphasis on creation, the future and the enhancement of life, along with his crusade against 'common sense', Deleuze offers some of the most liberating, exhilarating ideas in twentieth-century thought. This book offers a way in to Deleuzean thought through such topics as: * 'becoming' * time and the flow of life * the ethics of thinking * 'major' and 'minor' literature * difference and repetition * desire, the image and ideology. Written with literature students in mind, this is the ideal guide for students wishing to think differently about life and literature and in this way to create their own new readings of literary texts.

The collaboration potential between cycle logistics carriers
This paper is a reflection on the dynamics of the fast moving cycle logistics sector and the horizontal collaboration potential between cycle logistics companies (local to European wise) to contribute to the sustainable development of urban logistics. Stakeholders willing to manage part of the transition of the urban freight transportation or to support the scaling up of local cycle logistics carriers while getting rid of the competition paradigm would find important insights to do so. The results, using a multi-paradigm approach, are showing a comprehensive proposition of the opportunities and challenges that collaborative innovations represent. Among other, the possibility to set collective inter-city offer, to answer larger tenders, to gain visibility, credibility and support from various stakeholders and to achieve economies of scales through numerous mechanisms are discussed taking a supply side perspective. However, collaborative achievements remain difficult and its ambitions and configurations are function of the partners commitment, eventual public support or the involvement of an external coordinating party.

Dancing with Life: How Agility Makes You Personally and Collectively Gain Freedom and Elegance in a Complex World
In an increasingly complex world, being agile means continuously adapting and evolving with fluidity, thanks to a high-quality dialogue between our identity and our environment. Agility reconnects us with life; we gain freedom and elegance. This book answers questions such as: How can we improve our ability to sense weak signals, strategize and then act accordingly? Is management (the social technology of the industrial world) dead? How should it evolve? How can we effectively mobilize people and develop a context favourable to adaptation and innovation? What must be organized for self-organization to flourish? How do ants, bees, or schools of fish self-organize? What can we learn from Nature in its ability to evolve? How can Chinese thought and Taoism help us navigate in a complex world? What do Nietzsche, Montaigne or Leibniz have to say about Agility? What can we learn from the French and English approaches to gardens? How can we better go with the flow? In essence, how can we better dance with Life? Guiding you through mental models and practices to become agile at a both individual and collective level, nurtured by multiple sources, this book provides a holistic perspective to provoke your thought and encourage you to act and start dancing. "Dancing with Life" is a reference book about Agility and is used by AGILEmaker consultants to guide and support organisations in their Agility journey. It pictures a coherent universe, both philosophical (inspired by Nature, Chinese thought, sport, etc) and practical (containing numerous innovative frameworks and models). It provides agility practitioners and leaders with a robust and inspiring framework, as well as anybody looking to approach life with more freedom and elegance.

This book invites the reader to take a unique journey through the history of the Solar System, the Earth, its evolving biodiversity and ecosystems, and the current state of the planet. It is an attempt to stimulate the reader’s sense of wonder and fascination with our planet: how it was created, the eons before it was populated by ourselves, how organic life, including humans, developed and evolved, and some of the threats we face during the Late Holocene. The Origins of All Things is well suited for teaching purposes, as it offers a synoptic, well-supported overview of key issues in biology and geology, and an easy introduction to key publications that broaden the scope of each chapter. The book is relevant for students of biology, geography, geology and anyone interested in the origin of life on Earth and its evolution.

In a chaotic world, we all crave simplicity. We don’t want to waste time reconfiguring our smartphones, fumbling over digital printers, or plodding through online forms while deadlines bear down on us. We want technology that works. Yet the harder we try to create simple user experiences, the more we tie ourselves up in knots. We are undermined by demands to cram in more features, or lured into approaches that turn out to be more complex than ever. Simplicity is a discipline that can be learned. This book shows you how–with humor, powerful examples, quotes, and case studies. This new edition has been updated to provide fresh advice for teams struggling to satisfy the conflicting demands of their stakeholders; it addresses important trends in technology; and it shows how four simple rules of simplicity can be applied to new and emerging types of interaction. Over a weekend in May 2010, in the aftermath of the general election, the political parties are wrangling over who will form the government. Meanwhile, in a village near the Norfolk coast,a disillusioned English teacher and part-time election volunteer comes home for a rare visit and tries to put his life in order. However, the politics of family life can be every bit as vindictive and unpredictable as the Whitehall variety, and alliances can be made or broken without warning. The Heart of Things examines the conundrum that exists in sexual identity and the ‘minor disturbances’ that have far-reaching effects in people’s private lives.

Terence Rattigan was once regarded as the golden boy of the West End stage but he suffered a sudden and catastrophic fall from favour in the mid-1950s. In this new play, written to mark the centenary of Rattigan’s birth, he is 66 years old, in failing health, and waiting for the curtain to rise on his last play, Cause Célèbre. The Art of Concealment is not only about the demons that haunted one of our great playwrights but about the creative process itself, the loss of youth, the pain of love and the shallowness of fame. How does a playwright judge his own life? Can it be crafted, restructured, or does he have a duty to be honest, finally, about himself? The play received critical acclaim during a sell-out run at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London.
