In This Invisible Riot of the Mind, Gloria Sybil Gross contends that Samuel Johnson was a pioneer in the development of modern psychological thought, challenging the timeworn, stilted typecasting of Samuel Johnson as the pious Christian moralist. Instead, she argues that Johnson was a daring, at times irreverent, explorer of human nature, who strenuously rejected old relics of sanctimony and repressive authority. To make her case, Gross draws on a wide range of materials from Johnson's life and works, as well as from eighteenth-century medical psychology. Throughout, she is scrupulous in analyzing Johnson's psychological thought within the cultural idiom that would have been available to him. At the same time, she employs a classical psychoanalytic approach, that seeks to establish a coherent relationship among Johnson's life, his fantasies, and his creative work. This reading of Johnson reveals the radical direction of his investigations of mental experience, which put him in clear prospect of the basic premises underlying Freudian psychoanalysis. Gross argues that these premises—the principle of psychological determinism, the view of the mind as dictated by forces in conflict, the concept of the dynamic unconscious, and the submerged power of desire in all human activity—pervade Johnson's writings. Gross demonstrates not only that Johnson can profitably be read in psychoanalytic terms, but that Johnson is a psychological theorist of primary importance. This original and insightful work will be of interest to students and scholars of English literature, eighteenth-century studies, and literature and psychology.

Yet, despite the high visibility and prestige of the position, what superintendents actually do, on a day-to-day basis, remains mysterious to the layman and even to those in the profession. This book, authored by eight California superintendents, is a narrative telling their stories_from the professional side as well as the personal. It traces their beginnings as teachers, follows their moves into administration, and looks at the skills that they use to communicate, analyze, and succeed.

Winner of the Lambda Literary Award In this stunning work of theater, Moises Kaufman turns the trials of Oscar Wilde into a riveting human and intellectual drama. In April 1895 Oscar Wilde brought a libel suit against the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his youthful lover, who had publicly maligned him as a sodomite. In doing so, England's reigning man of letters set in motion a series of events that would culminate in his ruin and imprisonment. For within a year the bewildered Wilde himself was on trial for acts of gross indecency and, implicitly--for a vision of art that outraged Victorian propriety. Expertly interweaving courtroom testimony with excerpts from Wilde's writings and the words of his contemporaries, Gross Indecency unveils its subject in all his genius and human frailty, his age in all its complacency and repression. The result is a play that will be read and studied for decades to come.
This is not a textbook. Instead, it contains what the author judges necessary to cope with questions relating to Gross Anatomy in board and licensure exami nations. Although material that has appeared recently on (Part I) National Board Examinations is covered, simply listing and answering such questions certainly would not prepare you for the myriad possible alternatives. Because of your suc cessful background in anatomy, the approaches used in a first-year course are not necessary here. Recall, review and synthesis are the goals. Please examine the entire book now, to understand its organization and content, and how they may serve your needs. Throughout, text is kept to a minimum. The style, size and boldness of type were chosen to aid the quick recognition of import items. The illustrations, es sentially adaptations from blackboard drawings used by the author in reviews, support the text in certain areas. However, the number of illustrations sufficient to make this an independent resource would defeat our purpose. I assume you will consult your favorite atlas as you review, and that you are experienced enough now to relate your reading to your own body. A general table of contents follows this preface; detailed tables of content precede individual chapters.
"Thrilling...unforgettable, maybe even life-changing...it has the inevitablity and much of the monumentality of a Greek tragedy" (USA today) In 1895 Oscar Wilde brought a libel suit against the Marquess of Queensberry for publicly maligning him as a sodomite, thus setting in motion a chain of events which culminated in Wilde's own conviction and imprisonment for gross indecency. Weaving together original courtroom transcripts with writings by Wilde and his contemporaries, Gross Indecency charts the tragic downfall of the most sophisticated man of Victorian letters at the hands of a society that was itself outwardly elegant and adventurous, yet inwardly deeply repressive and vindictive."Kaufman has dramatized Wilde's fall with the sort of rapier stylization that Wilde himself would have admired." Gross Pathology Atlas: A Guide to Gross Specimen Evaluation is a novel reference dedicated to 'gross' images. Gross pathology is the branch of pathology that deals with the examination and diagnosis of diseases through the observation of organs, tissues, and bodily fluids with the naked eye, without the aid of a microscope. It involves the examination of specimens obtained during surgery, autopsy, or biopsy. This book serves as an essential tool for diagnosing diseases. By observing macroscopic features, pathologists can identify diseases or conditions affecting various organs and tissues for example, to detect tumors, inflammation, infections, and degenerative changes. Gross pathology specimens serve as invaluable teaching aids for medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals. They provide tangible examples of disease manifestations, facilitating the understanding of pathological processes. Moreover, gross pathology specimens are essential for research purposes, allowing scientists to study disease mechanisms, develop new treatments, and advance medical knowledge.
Who are the happiest Americans? Surveys show that religious people think they are happier than secularists, and secularists think they are happier than religious people. Liberals believe they are happier than conservatives, and conservatives disagree. In fact, almost every group thinks it is happier than everyone else. In this provocative new book, Arthur C. Brooks explodes the myths about happiness in America. As he did in the controversial Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism , Brooks examines vast amounts of evidence and empirical research to uncover the truth about who is happy in America, who is not, and-most important-why. He finds that there is a real happiness gap" in America today, and it lies disconcertingly close to America's cultural and political fault lines. The great divide between the happy and the unhappy in America, Brooks shows, is largely due to differences in social and cultural values. The values that bring happiness are faith, charity, hard work, optimism, and individual liberty. Secularism, excessive reliance on the state to solve problems, and an addiction to security all promote unhappiness. What can be done to maximize America's happiness? Replete with the unconventional wisdom for which Brooks has come to be known, Gross National Happiness offers surprising and illuminating conclusions about how our government can best facilitate Americans in their pursuit of happiness.
