Peter Matthiessen and Ecological Imagination

Peter Matthiessen and Ecological Imagination

Intaek Oh

Peter Matthiessen and Ecological Imagination offers an ecocritical reading of the Watson Trilogy – Killing Mister Watson (1990), Lost Man’s River (1997), and Bone By Bone (1999) – which draws together themes Matthiessen has been exploring both in his fiction and nonfiction. While this study argues that his ecological imagination comes from his unique experience as a novelist, naturalist, environmentalist, social activist, and a student of Zen, it also illustrates that for Matthiessen, economic, political, social, racial, psychological, epistemological, and ecological issues are all inseparably interconnected. Set in the Everglades frontier in the formative era of American industrial capitalism, Matthiessen’s novels are his grand attempt to reexamine the root causes of ecological disaster in the region and the costs to the people and the land that accompanied the conquering of the frontier.

In 1973, Sandy Sanderson attended School of Infantry in Gwelo, in what was then central Rhodesia, for officer training. Now, more than 40 years on, he has written a book based on the diary he kept. The result is a frank, detailed and sometimes humorous account of the training as it happened. The book will be intriguing to people from all parts of the world with an interest in themilitary. In June 1977, Time magazine commented, "Man for man, the Rhodesian Army ranks amongst the world's finest fighting units". If this were true the training must surely have contributed. Recruits were trained by some of the toughest and most experienced military instructors in the world, all of whom possessed a varied, if profane, vocabulary. As Sandy put it, "Any Rhodesian drill instructorcould string a sentence together consisting entirely of expletives, apart from the odd indefinite article, and make perfect sense". In spite of this they werehugely respected and their expertise undoubtedly saved many lives.
Glucose Intake and Utilization in Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes
This important reference, edited by Ronald Ross Watson and Betsy Dokken, collects the research needed to make the distinct connection between pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Glucose Intake and Utilization in Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes: Implications for Cardiovascular Disease explains the mechanisms of progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes to cardiovascular disease. Since pre-diabetes and diabetes are important cardiovascular disease risk factors, and impaired glucose metabolism among cardiac patients is extremely prevalent, the importance of reviewing pre-diabetes and its involvement in CVD complications is vital as one applies food and glycemic control to slow progress to diabetes and heart disease. The book further focuses on glucose intake and utilization in diabetes, including coverage of diabetes in the development and pathology of cardiovascular disease, risks and epidemiology of cardiovascular problems promoted by diabetes, macrovascular effects and their safety in therapy of diabetics, beta cell biology and therapy of diabetes, and nutrition to modulate diabetes.
Assessing Intake of Food and Dietary Supplements in Older Adults
Dietary assessment in older adults presents many unique problems due to the diversity of health states and capabilities that span the population group. Little is known about dietary intakes, body composition, and nutritional status among individuals 75 and older. The National Academies Food and Nutrition Board hosted a virtual workshop series in spring 2022 intended to provide guidance to researchers and clinicians. The workshops aimed to outline considerations relating to different methods of assessing intakes of food and dietary supplements in older adults. The covered topics included current status of dietary and nutrition assessment of older adults and advances and key issues in this topic; nutritional screening of older adults; and nutritional practices, challenges, and policies that affect older adults. This Proceedings highlights presentations and discussions from the workshops. Food Intake in Fish

Food Intake in Fish

Blackwell Science Ltd
2001
sidottu
The intake of food by fishes is an area of study that is of great importance to the applied sciences of fisheries and aquaculture for a number of reasons. For example a thorough knowledge of factors influencing the ingestion of feed can lead to successful manipulation of the rearing environment of cultured fishes, thereby ensuring improved growth performance and feed utilisation, and decreasing the amount of waste (and consequent pollution) per unit of fish produced. This important book, which has arisen out of a European Union COST programme, illustrates how insights into the biological and environmental factors that underlie the feeding responses of fish may be used to address practical issues of feed management. Food Intake in Fish contains carefully edited contributions from internationally recognised scientists, providing a book that is an invaluable tool and reference to all those involved in aquaculture, especially those working in the aquaculture feed industry and scientific personnel in commercial and research aquaculture facilities. This book should also find a place on the shelves of fish biologists and physiologists and as a reference in libraries of universities, research establishments and aquaculture equipment companies.

Aimed towards advanced students and researchers in language acquisition and teaching, Language Intake: Understanding and Improving Language Learning and Teaching considers the long-debated definition of language intake and its determining factors. In doing so, it presents a unique argument for language input and intake, with a particular focus on how "input", "interaction", "identity", and "investment" contribute to intake through complex intercommunication. The book defines each of the contributing factors of intake in turn and demonstrates the principles of language intake through interviews with successful language learners, in order to encourage teachers to take these factors into consideration so as to maximise intake of the target language. The author proposes that all these multiple factors contribute to what might be called the “Intake Hypothesis”, which can be outlined as a practicable framework to support teachers in providing rich, interesting, and extensive input, affording opportunities for interaction, respecting learner identity, and offering a motivating environment to encourage and sustain investment of time and effort, thereby contributing to intake.

Iodine Intake: Essential Element for Health and Wellness
Iodine is a mineral found naturally in certain foods. It is a significant component of triiodothyronine and thyroxine, which are known as thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate various significant biochemical reactions, comprising enzymatic activity and protein synthesis, which are important determining factors of metabolic activity. Iodine is a significant component in the development of fetus and infant, production of thyroid hormone, and holds critical nutritional value at all the stages of human life. Lack of iodine rich diet can lead to developmental and functional abnormalities. Severe iodine deficiency can result in preterm delivery, low birth weight, early abortion, hypothyroidism, mental retardation and neuro-cognitive impairment. Iodine is majorly found in sea foods, animal proteins and to certain extent in foods like milk, cereals and bread. This book provides comprehensive insights on iodine and its intake. The readers would gain knowledge that would broaden their perspective regarding this mineral and its health effects.

Sodium Intake and Related Diseases
It has been recognized that moderation in the use of salt (sodium chloride) prevents the tendency of blood pressure to increase with age. On the other hand, the abuse of salt frequently leads to increases in blood pressure and contributes to the development of hypertension, particularly in overweight or obese people, in people with diabetes, in the elderly, and in genetically predisposed subjects. This Special Issue aims to provide a better understanding of the relationship between sodium intake and related diseases, in particular: (i) the effect on health status and description of the biochemical processes involved; and (ii) the use of salt and related risks. The main topics are studies in the management and treatment of sodium-intake-related diseases, epidemiological studies of the relationship between salt intake and related diseases, focuses on the mechanism of action; delineation of the mechanisms of action, and in vitro and in vivo studies.
Nutrient Intake and Physical Exercise as Modulators of Healthy Women
Cumulative evidence demonstrates that healthy nutrient intake and regular physical exercise are both powerful lifestyle strategies that modulate lifelong health through their ability to improve body composition, musculoskeletal health, sex steroid hormones, sleep quality, and physical and cognitive performance, as well as to prevent chronic diseases across the lifespan, especially in women. While the benefits of nutrition and physical exercise are commonly studied separately, the integration of nutrition and physical exercise has the potential to produce greater benefits in women than strategies focusing only on one or the other. Studying the specificities of women in response to interventions is of the utmost importance for providing optimal healthcare and aids the design of guidelines that are better suited for women. A better knowledge regarding nutrient intake and physical exercise and their interaction in women is therefore needed. This Special Issue entitled "nutrient intake and physical exercise as modulators of healthy women" will comprise manuscripts that highlight this integrational approach as a potential modulator of lifelong outcomes in women.
Dietary Intake and Chronic Disease Prevention
This reprint describes how lifestyle changes can impact the incidence and progression of chronic non-communicable diseases. In this context, regular physical activity and heathy nutritional habits are very important. Moreover, natural bioactive compounds could represent a new adjuvant therapy in the clinical management of these pathological conditions.
