In this handbook the opportunity has been taken firstly to present the waterbalance in the horny layer and the sweat secretion process with particular emphasis on their relationship to the pharmacodynamical aspects of the micro circulation and permeability of the skin. F. A. 1. THIELE was unable to witness the printing of his life-work concerning the water balance of skin, which he had compiled at the university in Nijmegen with J. W. H. MALI and G. 1. DE JONGH and D. A. REAY from Great Britain. Their contribution concentrates on evaluating the cooling function of the sweat glands with their heat-pipe system and on the physico-chemical effects of dermatological therapy and topically applied cosmetics. A certain amount of overlapping with Volume I/4A (E. SCHWARZ) could not be avoided, and yet the presentation by THIELE and co-workers considers different aspects. The pharmacodynamics of externally applied substances involved in microcirculation are related thematically also to percutaneous resorption. Function and morphology of pharmacodynamics in microcirculation are inseparable. Therefore the structural alterations of the blood vessels in reaction to foreign agents or as an adaptation to endogenous tissue hormone release have been examined electronmicroscopically by W. G. FORSSMANN and his team, and relay a distinct picture of the microcirculation in the area of skin reactiveness. The direct pharmacological aspects of the skin and the systemic effects on blood vessels and their permeability have been listed according to the latest research material.

Finally, a work that places antiquity's Triumphal Arches in the context of their origins and why this is not only history past but present. Furthermore, the context of these monuments are anything but naive displays of grandeur--they were erected to demonstrate the triumph of the victor over the conquered. What is most fascinating is the original Roman Arch of Triumph fully developed by General Titus to commemorate the Roman Empire's victory over Judea and the commencement of the diaspora of the Jews circa 70 AD.The authors "connect the dots" whereby the Kingdoms of the World under the "Bondage of Egypt" from whence Israel's First Exodus took place have been at deliberate odds with the Kingdom of God. No, this is the eternal purpose of the Almighty who purposed through His Messiah, the Deliverer Who shall come "out of Zion" to rescue His ancient people and those brought into the "Commonwealth of Israel (again, those from among the nations--the Gentiles--a "people for His Name") AND to make of these "two house" - these "two sticks" - one nation, one peculiar people - distinct but not separated for eternity Yes, this is an intense commentary based of extensive biblical passages which confirm the New Covenant and its Everlasting Covenant of Peace between these two which was won in atonement at the Cross nigh 2,000 years ago - but, as the reader shall discover, the "enemy of our souls" has heretofore kept the "faithful son" and the "prodigal son" - jealous and apart, the one from the other--but the Father desires there to be but One House.Even so, Messiah came to the "lost sheep of the House of Israel" - but did He not say: "Other sheep I have which are not of this fold, them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice, and there will be one flock and and one shepherd" (John 10:16)?Those with a Jewish background should read this text with intense interest--Christians who have heretofore dismissed such insights do well to consider the major theological issues raised as a result of these discoveries and why they confront us at this most critical time in world history.The authors have generously illustrated the text to substantiate its contents and have prepared an exhaustive Scripture Reference Index, as well as an Exhaustive Subject Index and Bibliography. Authors Schafer and Krieger realize the subject matter is NOT for general consumption; however, with the outbreak of "Biblical Zionism"--the prophetic fulfillment of the Jews returning to Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel) and Christians of goodwill who know that their relationship with this prophetic fulfillment brings the world close to the Messianic age and the "final redemption" - then ought not there to be greater light from the pages of this Book of book by the very "people of the book" wherein it is said in "The Scripture of Truth" (Daniel 10:21): "But you, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the Book until the time of the end. Then] many shall run to and fro and search anxiously through the Book], and knowledge of God's purposes as revealed by His prophets] shall be increased and become great" (Daniel 12:4).Yes, this is an intense theological discourse; but it is a book of pending fulfillment--a prophetic call for "God's People" to embrace their glorious destiny. Wenn dadurch gewisse Dberschnei- dungen verursacht wurden, so halten wir dies nicht fUr einen Nachteil. Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Dr. h. c. KARL SCHARRER, der langjahrige Direktor des agrikulturchemischen Instituts der Justus-Liebig-Universitat in GieBen, gab den AnstoB zum Entstehen dieses Werkes, mit dem er seinen grundlegenden Arbeiten auf dem Gebiete der Agrikulturchemie und insbesondere auf dem des Dungungswesens einen zusammenfassenden AbschluB geben wollte. Seine letzten Bemuhungen vom Krankenbett aus galten diesem Buch. Sein fruher Tod lieB ihn das Entstehen des Gesamtwerkes nicht mehr erleben. Der Heraus- geber hofft, es in seinem Sinne weitergefUhrt zu haben. Dber hundert Wissenschaftler und Techniker aus aller Welt haben an dem Werk mitgearbeitet. Ihnen allen sei an dieser Stelle besonders gedankt. Die 5. "Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft fur Okologie" enthalten die Vortrage der vom 22. bis 24. September 197 5 in Wien durchgefuhrten J ahrestagung. Schwer- punktsmassig behandeln die Referate alpine und arktische Okosysteme, die okologi- schen und genetischen Voraussetzungen fur das Leben in Trockengebieten sowie limnische Okosysteme. Durch die Berucksichtigung der diese Systeme tangierenden IBP- und MAB-Forschungsprogramme liefern sie zugleich auch aktuelle Informa- tionen uber laufende Forschungsprojekte unserer Osterreichischen und schweizer Kollegen. Struktudle und energetische Untersuchungen uber einzelne Okosysteme, Biozo- nosen und Populationen stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Die vorgelegten Arbeiten verdeutlichen, dass jedes lebendige System uber die Kenntnis seiner Struktur, Funk- tion und Geschichte Informationen zu einem tieferen Verstandnis des von ihm belebten Raumes liefert. Sie zeigen, dass letztlich jeder Suche nach "Belastungsindi- katoren" und "okologischen Kriterien" die Frage nach dem Informationsgehalt von Organismen und lebenden Systemen sowie deren Reaktionen auf endo- und exogene Faktoren zugrunde liegt. Sowohl aus Veranderungen der Areal- und Okosysteme, als auch aus Wandlungen von Biozonosen und deren Reaktionen wurden Ruckschlusse auf die diese Veranderungen auslosenden Faktoren gezogen. Populationen und Bio- zonosen reagieren naturgemass nach eigenen Regeln, konnen jedoch nur existieren, wenn sie bestandig auch Informationen uber andere Komponenten aus ihrem Ver- breitungsgebiet speichern und verarbeiten. Diese adaptiven Fahigkeiten der unter- suchten Arten und Systeme sind jedoch noch weitgehend unbearbeitet. Hier klafft eine echte Lucke, die den Transfer okologischer Daten z. B. in di. c Landesplanung erschwert. Die Qualitat jeder Planung hangt weitgehend von den eingesetzten okologischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Erhebungsdaten ab.
