Fashion turns killer in the latest novel from the national bestselling author of the Threadville mysteries... Threadville, Pennsylvania, is famous for its fabric, needlecraft, and embroidery, so it's only natural that it would become the home of the Threadville Academy of Design and Modeling. While Willow Vanderling has certainly never wanted to be a model, here she is, voluntarily strutting her stuff in a charity runway show in outrageous clothing, all to support the Academy's scholarship fund. But the lascivious, mean-spirited director of the academy, Antonio, is making the fashion show a less-than-fabulous affair. After Antonio plays a shocking prank on Willow and her friends that doesn't exactly leave the ladies in stitches, he mysteriously winds up dead--and someone is trying to pin the blame on Willow. Now, she must do whatever it takes in order to clear her name, even if it means needling around in other people's secrets...
Cherished Family Stories for Our Cherished Children
Inspired by her mother's numerous tales of growing up in Nebraska during the Depression, and as her life as a young bride and as a nurse, Mary Jane began compiling these anecdotes years ago when she began to realize their significance to her family's history. With the birth of nieces and nephews and the death of her beloved mother came the realization that life does not last forever and the imperative to preserve these family treasures became even greater. With generous and enthusiastic contributions of photos, facts, details and insights, family members enhanced these stories and provided depth and luster to this glimpse into an American family descended from immigrants. Although it is typical in many ways, this family is unique - as perhaps all families are unique - and the author's gratitude to her parents, her sister and each of her relatives is boundless.

Bilingual Pre-Teens

Janet M. Fuller

Routledge

This volume examines the connection between socio-economic class and bilingual practices, a previously under-researched area, through looking at differences in bilingual settings that are classified as "immigrant" or "elite" and are thus linked to socio-economic class categories. Fuller chooses for this examination bilingual pre-teen children in Germany and the U.S. in order to demonstrate how local identities are embedded in a wider social world and how ideologies and identities both produce and reproduce each other. In so doing, she argues that while pre-teen children are clearly influenced by macro-level ideologies, they also have agency in how they choose to construct their identities with relation to hegemonic societal discourses, and have many other motivations and identities aside from social class membership which shape their linguistic practices.

The Language of Tesol and Bilingual Education: An Expanded Glossary of Key Terms and Concepts
To sustain meaningful conversations about language education with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders within the widely ranging contexts of TESOL and bilingual education, it is important that practitioners and experts are conversant with key terms and concepts. Terminology related to TESOL and bilingual education is dynamic, nuanced, and evolving. This is particularly the case as teaching and research in relation to multilingual learners continue to expand. It is essential for educators of all kinds to be equipped with the necessary terminology and background knowledge. The Language of TESOL and Bilingual Education: An Expanded Glossary of Key Terms and Concepts provides clear definitions and context for critical terms and concepts related to English language teaching and bilingual education while also highlighting their practical applications and implications for teacher education. These connections facilitate a transition from a mere recognition and use of terminology to a more profound critical reflection on how these terms relate to one's own beliefs and instructional practices. This volume is the perfect companion for any educator, university student, or scholar wishing to exercise their fine-tuned understanding and expression of multilingual learner education using important terms and considerations for practice.

I was reading this book, The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel, a turn-of-the-century 'New Thought' writer. What's now a complete book, in 1916, it was broken up into twenty-four subsets or periodicals. It has action steps at the end of each subset to unlock the law of attraction and change your life forever. Approximately two years after reading a passage from Frederick Elias Andrews in The Master Key System, I sought seven like-minded writing partners interested in exploring these ideas of guiding principles to becoming happy in their own lives. Together, we are writing eight books about our collective wisdom on the affirmations; "I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, happy, and healthy." We call ourselves The Wisdom Buffet Writers. Welcome to our first book: Happiness Chronicles - Short Stories and Recipes for a Happy Life. Customer Reviews: Catherine says: - 5 Stars. I particularly appreciated the chapter by Katherine Graham, a wife, mother, and business owner, about how to be a happy woman in modern society. Her advice is, *Let go of expecting yourself or your life to be perfect. *Gain perspective by not taking things personally. *Set boundaries with your time and energy by learning to say no to excessive demands to trust the unfoldment of your life. Ruth says: - 5 Stars What a great book that helps us find what we all want anyway I love that each chapter is written by someone with a different perspective so that depending on my mood, I can dip in and pull up something to carry around in my mind for the day. A great book for morning meditation, evening relaxation, or when I'm holding an interminable hold on the phone. The little aphorisms are wonderful. "Be yourself, everyone else is taken." from Oscar Wilde. The chapter that spoke volumes to me was Angi Ma Wong's Secrets to Happiness. She advises readers to make a list of the things that make them happy and do at least one, every day. Such simple advice, and how astonished I am that I don't do that Belinda Mendoza's chapter on pets and the happiness they create is very insightful, especially since it starts with her talking about the loss of a beloved pet. We spend all kinds of money and time pursuing happiness, but this is an inexpensive book that will provide more happiness than all the other diversions of a lifetime. Frankie says: - 5 Stars Excellent inspirational read...you will not be disappointed I'll return to this book several times this year (and for years to come) to draw on its happiness energy "M" says: - 5 Stars This is a great book to read in small pieces. The table of contents is perfect as I can choose a chapter based on how I feel that day. Mary Jane's chapter on recipes to experience a happy life is fun and impactful. I'm looking forward to their next seven books.
A Neighborhood Divided

A Neighborhood Divided

Jane Balin

Cornell University Press

When a nursing facility for AIDS patients is planned for a city neighborhood, residents might be expected to respond, "Not in my backyard." But, as Jane Balin recounts in A Neighborhood Divided, when that community is known for its racial and ethnic diversity and liberal attitudes, public reaction becomes less predictable and in many ways more important to comprehend. An ethnographer who spent two years talking with inhabitants of a progressive neighborhood facing this prospect, Jane Balin demonstrates that the controversy divided residents in surprising ways. She discovered that those most strongly opposed to the facility lived furthest away, that families with young children were evenly represented in the two camps, and that African Americans followed a Jewish community leader in opposing the home while dismissing their own minister's support of it. By viewing each side sympathetically and allowing participants to express their true feelings about AIDS, the author invites readers to recognize their own anxieties over this sensitive issue. Balin's insightful work stresses the importance of uncovering the ideologies and fears of middle-class Americans in order to understand the range of responses that AIDS has provoked in our society. Its ethnographic approach expands the parameters of NIMBY research, offering a clearer picture of the multi-faceted anxieties that drive responses to AIDS at both the local and national levels.

Becoming Gentlemen: Women, Law School, and Institutional Change

"The challenge, then, is not to invent new victims or new scapegoats but to mobilize America for the future. What would it take to ensure that all of us can succeed at getting the job done, the problem solved, and the future more secure?" As a student at Yale Law School in 1974, Lani Guinier attended a class with a white male professor who addressed all the students, male and female, as "gentlemen." To him the greeting was a form of honorific, evoking the values of traditional legal education. To her it was profoundly alienating. Years later Guinier began a study of female law students with her colleagues, Michelle Fine and Jane Balin, to try to understand the frustrations of women law students in male-dominated schools. Women are now entering law schools in large numbers, but too often many still do not feel welcome. As one says, "I used to be very driven, competitive. Then I started to realize that all my effort was getting me nowhere. I just stopped caring. I am scarred forever." After interviewing hundreds of women with similar stories, the authors conclude that conventional one-size-fits-all approaches to legal education discourage many women who could otherwise succeed and, even more, fail to help all students realize their full potential as legal problem-solvers. In Becoming Gentlemen Guinier, Fine, and Balin dare us to question what it means to become qualified, what a fair goal in education might be, and what we can learn from the experience of women law students about teaching and evaluating students in general. Including the authors' original study and two essays and a personal afterword by Lani Guinier, the book challenges us to work toward a more just society, based on ideals of cooperation, the resources of diversity, and the values of teamwork.
