Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons (b. 1959) makes powerful work that holds and beholds the stories of historically silenced peoples and urges societal change. Her journey as an artist, teacher, and activist has taken her from Cuba through the United States, and her autobiographical compositions honor her Nigerian and Chinese ancestors while also facing the future. With an artistic practice that crosses boundaries, intertwines media-from photography to sculpture, film to performance-and references traditions and beliefs ranging from feminism to Santeria Campos-Pons's work is deeply layered and complex. This volume, the first critical look at the artist's oeuvre in nearly two decades, surveys the concerns, materials, and places invoked throughout her forty-year career. Thoughtful essays explore her vibrant, arresting artwork, which confronts issues of agency and the construction of race and belonging and challenges us to reckon with these issues in our own lives.

The Relationship Code

The Relationship Code

The Relationship Code is the report of a longitudinal study, conducted over a ten-year period, of the influence of family relationships and genetic factors on competence and psychopathology in adolescent development. The sample for this landmark study included 720 pairs of same-sex adolescent siblings—including twins, half siblings, and genetically unrelated siblings—and their parents.Using a clear expressive style, David Reiss and his coinvestigators identify specific mechanisms that link genetic factors and the social environment in psychological development. They propose a striking hypothesis: family relationships are crucial to the expression of genetic influences on a broad array of complex behaviors in adolescents. Moreover, this role of family relationships may be very specific: some genetic factors are linked to mother–child relationships, others to father–child relations, some to relationship warmth, while others are linked to relationship conflict or control. The specificity of these links suggests that family relationships may constitute a code for translating genetic influences into the ontogeny of behaviors, a code every bit as important for behavior as DNA-RNA.

The world has a way of making us believe that our past experiences and circumstances define who we are and who we will become. Fortunately for Janee', she discovered that the world didn't have the final say and that she was created for bigger, better and higher. "I'm No One's Girlfriend & Obedience Got Me Here," is Jane 's story to her journey back to a deeper relationship with God through Christ, which revealed to her along the way who God is and who He created her to be. Through surrendering her full life to God and allowing Him to make her whole in the area previously reserved for men who didn't deserve her, Janee' went from heartbreak to healing, and from brokenness to unbreakable. She wrote this book to encourage other women who may be experiencing similar struggles and to prove to them how God is always choosing us, even when we're not choosing Him.

From the moment we wake up to the moment we end our day, we use interfaces built out of the written word. Textual information remains now, as it has for centuries, the cornerstone of human information acquisition. The wide adoption of smartphone, tablets, e-readers and personal computers has shifted the bulk of this reading from inflexible paper to digital content. The control provided by digital displays over how visual information is presented to readers has the potential to improve reading for each and every reader, regardless of ability or diagnosis. This represents a profound shift in how we think about reading because text is no longer rendered immutable by writers, designers, or publishers at a single stage, and human-computer interaction research is key to realizing its potential. Readability research takes a fundamentally individual approach to what each reader needs. Each reader has their own individual needs. Meanwhile, adapting the written word to the individual reader has never been easier, and the goal of maximizing individual reading efficacy is increasingly attainable. No one discipline or field has all the tools or answers, and readability work is inherently interdisciplinary. The authors of this monograph include vision scientists, technology experts, educators, designers, typographers, and data scientists. Together they represent voices from academia, the tech industry, and non-profit institutions, driven by common goals to improve the reading interfaces of today. In this review, they provide a comprehensive introduction to interdisciplinary methodologies, tools, and materials required for readability research focused on the individual reader. They call on the HCI community to contribute to the growing understanding of readers’ needs; to study the interactions between text, user, and task; and to build the tools and interfaces needed to improve reading outcomes for all.

In layered compositions that hover somewhere between the mediums of photography, collage, and painting, artist Jenee Mateer allows chance pollination, evolution and the interplay of control and chaos to reveal a connection between gardening and making art. Alluding to the metaphorical connection between flowers and the female or feminine she celebrates a diverse group of women, transformed and unified by bold color, pattern and botanical forms, re-affirming our connection to the natural world.
