Barth's Ethics of Reconciliation

Barth's Ethics of Reconciliation

John Bainbridge Webster

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
John Webster provides a major scholarly analysis of the final sections of the Church Dogmatics. He focuses on the theme of human agency in Barth's late ethics and doctrine of baptism, placing the discussion in the context of an interpretation of the Dogmatics as an intrinsically ethical dogmatics. The first two chapters survey the themes of agency, covenant and human reality in the Dogmatics as a whole; later chapters give a thorough analysis of Church Dogmatics IV/4 and the posthumously published text The Christian Life. A final chapter examines the significance of Barth's work for contemporary accounts of moral selfhood. The book is important not only for a detailed analysis of a neglected part of Barth's oeuvre, but also because it casts into question much of what has hitherto been written about Barth's ethical dogmatics.

This book is the first introduction in any language to the work of Eberhard Jüngel, who increasingly is recognised as one of the leading contemporary Protestant German theologians. It furnishes a comprehensive survey of his work as New Testament scholar, systematic theologian and philosopher, focusing particularly on his discussions of theological and religious language, the role of Christology, the doctrines of God and man, and questions of natural theology. Some initial evaluations of Jüngel’s theology are offered in the light of other current traditions of theology and philosophy, both English and German.

Gun Barons: The Weapons That Transformed America and the Men Who Invented Them
John Bainbridge, Jr.'s Gun Barons is a narrative history of six charismatic and idiosyncratic men who changed the course of American history through the invention and refinement of repeating weapons.Love them or hate them, guns are woven deeply into the American soul. Names like Colt, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, and Remington are legendary. Yet few people are aware of the roles these men played at a crucial time in United States history, from westward expansion in the 1840s, through the Civil War, and into the dawn of the Gilded Age. Through personal drive and fueled by bloodshed, they helped propel the young country into the forefront of the world's industrial powers. Their creations helped save a nation divided, while planting seeds that would divide the country again a century later. Their inventions embodied an intoxicating thread of American individualism--part fiction, part reality--that remains the foundation of modern gun culture. They promoted guns not only for the soldier, but for the Everyman, and also made themselves wealthy beyond their most fevered dreams. Gun Barons captures how their bold inventiveness dwelled in the psyche of an entire people, not just in the minds of men who made firearm fortunes. Whether we revere these larger-than-life men or vilify them, they helped forge the American character.

Asynchronous System-on-Chip Interconnect describes the use of an entirely asynchronous system-bus for the modular construction of integrated circuits. Industry is just awakening to the benefits of asynchronous design in avoiding the problems of clock-skew and multiple clock-domains, an din parallel with this is coming to grips with Intellectual Property (IP) based design flows which emphasise the need for a flexible interconnect strategy. In this book, John Bainbridge investigates the design of an asynchronous on-chip interconnect, looking at all the stages of the design from the choice of wiring layout, through asynchronous signalling protocols to the higher level problems involved in supporting split transactions. The MARBLE bus (the first asynchronous SoC bus) used in a commercial demonstrator chip containing a mixture of asynchronous and synchronous macrocells is used as a concrete example throughout the book.

Just why do churches put so much energy into repackaging and explaining their holy book in words more people (even their own people) might understand? Many of us don't really want to know who "the wicked" are, or what "sin," "righteousness," "God," or "Lord" might mean, because they are part of a religious world we don't belong to. So what could we possibly have to learn from a text that is baked in that stuff? Much is being rediscovered in contemplative, meditative, and wisdom traditions, often dating back millennia and transcending religious worldviews. It should be no surprise then that there is indeed precious insight into human life to be found in the ancient Hebrew writings too. But how do we access it? It is time to offer a portion to everyone, all humans, regardless of background or religious affiliation, as we ask questions we have always been asking. Where is my life headed? What are my influences, and how do I react? Can I affect society? Do I feel stupid? Confident? Do I meditate and feel a reassuring sense of presence or terrible loneliness? Do my choices define me? When I try to act positively, am I part of something bigger? What is life all about? Where does suffering fit in? Love has a vital role in the process, and atheists, secularists, humanists, spirituals, religious folk--all humans should find more compelling spiritual insight here than we ever dreamed possible.
