Mention grade inflation and most educationalists will immediately think of student examination results. However, grade inflation can exist wherever graded systems are used, resulting in an unduly optimistic view of performance. In this book, the authors examine grade inflation in those educational performance management and quality assurance systems that use grading systems. In particular, they look at grade inflation through the lens of graded lesson observations. The book defines grade inflation and examines how it arises. In addition, it identifies what enables grade inflation to grow undetected and the consequences, together with practical steps institutions can adopt to minimize its impact.

Peer observations between teachers, where they watch their colleagues at work, can provide them with invaluable insights into the effectiveness of their practice, while simultaneously offering an effective way to help them to secure improvement. There is, therefore, a key role for peer observations in raising standards in educational institutions. However, all too often, even where the use of peer observations is attempted, because of poor understanding about their use, much of their potential value is lost. As a consequence, peer observations can often be restricted to a minor role in the professional development of teachers. Given the potential benefits that they can offer, this is unfortunate. Therefore, this book takes the reader through the entire process of peer observations, from their initial planning, through to the post-observation meeting. Based on extensive experience, it aims to provide both teachers and managers with a brief practical guide to undertaking peer observations and extracting the maximum benefit from them.

The story of the recovery of mountain lions in the Black Hills of South Dakota.Mountain lions, sometimes called pumas or cougars, were once spread throughout the United States, occupying all 48 of the contiguous states. By the 1960s, though, they were almost extinct in central and eastern North America. In Mountain Lions of the Black Hills, Dr. Jonathan A. Jenks, who, along with his team of graduate students, has tracked over 200 of these fascinating predators, tells the complex story of the big cats’ lives in the northern Great Plains.Jenks reports on mountain lion population dynamics, diet, nutrition, diseases, behavior, and genetics. He explores the impact of a changing prey base on population growth and decline, movements within and away from the region, and hunting on the species; discusses interactions between the cats and livestock; and examines local people’s evolving perceptions of mountain lions. Throughout, Jenks explores how we can balance conservation techniques with the needs of humans.Providing a unique look into how a large, secretive predator recolonized an isolated region of North America, Mountain Lions of the Black Hills is required reading for wildlife professionals. A captivating text for anyone struck by the wild majesty of these big cats, this book provides invaluable data upon which to make sound management decisions in the Great Plains and beyond.

In the heart of a modern state, a Marxist movement takes root. What unfolds when such a movement ascends to power, and what insights can today’s political activists glean from this experience? Revolutionaries in the Halls of Power by Jonathan Rosenblum offers a gripping narrative of Seattle’s transformative journey from 2014 to 2024. For 10 years, the US city of Seattle served as a laboratory for this unusual political experiment, with the election of Kshama Sawant, a member of Socialist Alternative, to Seattle City Council. Despite being vastly outnumbered on the council, Sawant and her organization took on the political establishment and corporate titans like Amazon and Starbucks. They secured historic victories for working people: implementing a $15 minimum wage, imposing a tax on Amazon to fund social housing, and enacting groundbreaking renters' rights legislation. Sawant’s movement improbably steered the city’s political discourse for a decade through three intense reelection campaigns. Sawant’s strategy diverged from that of modern-day reform socialists by leaning into the revolutionary lessons and experiences of Marxist theorists and practitioners over the past 175 years. Her approach was grounded in three pillars: a class struggle mindset to navigate an unfriendly political system, bold demands that link core material needs of the working class to the broader quest for socialist change, and a commitment to grassroots democracy to propel legislation forward. These pillars, while not new to socialist thinking, marked a fresh application in the U.S. political context. This book sheds light on how Marxist theory fueled this decade-long movement. With an insider’s view from working within Sawant’s Council office and alongside core activists, Rosenblum provides a deeply informed perspective. For political activists searching desperately to make sense of the world, the Seattle experience provides a roadmap, a way to fight back, a ray of hope in the despairing miasma of 21st Century capitalism.

What hope is there for Africa? Since the heady and hopeful days of decolonisation the story seems to be one of unrelenting disaster - revolution; brutal military dictatorship; ethnic conflict - even genocide; civil war; state-threatening corruption; economic failure; and, in places, the complete breakdown of state and society. And all has been compounded by natural disasters - drought, famine and the scourge of AIDS. But there is another, less reported, story of Africa: throwing off the colonial past, embracing modernity, learning fast, gaining in pride and self-confidence and embracing the crucial management function; all this in the context of fruitful collaboration with Europe and American business and, increasingly, with the rising Asian economic superpowers. Jonathan Lawley's Beyond the Malachite Hills paints a vivid and convincing picture of solid political, social and economic progress. Beyond the Malachite Hills is a remarkable testament to his long-lasting and profound involvement with this often misunderstood continent.

Landslides are caused by a failure of the mechanical balance within hillslopes. This balance is governed by two coupled physical processes: hydrological or subsurface flow and stress. The stabilizing strength of hillslope materials depends on effective stress, which is diminished by rainfall. This book presents a cutting-edge quantitative approach to understanding hydro-mechanical processes across variably saturated hillslope environments and to the study and prediction of rainfall-induced landslides. Topics covered include historic synthesis of hillslope geomorphology and hydrology, total and effective stress distributions, critical reviews of shear strength of hillslope materials and different bases for stability analysis. Exercises and homework problems are provided for students to engage with the theory in practice. This is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in hydrology, geomorphology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering and geomechanics and for professionals in the fields of civil and environmental engineering and natural hazard analysis.

The newest research on a major Anglo-Saxon site paints a vivid picture of the beginnings of England. [Edited by Martin Carver] For decades scholars have puzzled over the true story of settlement in Britain between the fifth and eight centuries. Did the Romans leave? Did the Anglo-Saxons invade? What happened to the British? Newlight on these questions comes unexpectedly from Wasperton, a small village on the Warwickshire Avon, where archaeologists had the good fortune to excavate a complete cemetery and its prehistoric setting. The community reused an old Romano-British agricultural enclosure, and built burial mounds beside it. There was a score of cremations in Anglo-Saxon pots; but there were also unfurnished graves lined with stones and planks in the manner of western Britain. In a pioneering analysis, including radiocarbon and stable isotopes, the authors of this book have put this variety of burial practice into a credible sequence, and built up a picture of life at the time. Here there were people who were culturally Roman, British and Anglo-Saxon, pagan and Christian in continuous use of the same graveyard and drawing on a common inheritance. Here we can see the beginnings of England and the people who made it happen- not the kings, warriors and preachers, but the ordinary folk obliged to make their own choices: choices about what nation to build and which religion to follow. MARTIN CARVER is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of York; Dr CATHERINE HILLS is Senior Lecturer in Anglo-Saxon Archaeology at the University of Cambridge; Dr JONATHAN SCHESCHKEWITZ is Officer with the Ancient Monuments authority of Stuttgart.
