The empirical focus of this book is on the twenty year struggle by parents and members of the Black community in Toronto to introduce an Africentric Alternative School (AAS) with Black-focused curricula. The Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) was often called the conscience of physics. He was famous for his sharp and critical mind which made him a central figure among the founders of quantum physics. He also was an outstanding philosopher, especially interested in finding a new conception of reality and of causality. A careful study of the original sources of the past culminated in his study of Kepler and of medieval symbolism, a concept that played a central role in his discussion with Carl Jung on what they called the psycho-physical problem. Pauli considered the sharp distinctions between knowledge and faith and between spirit and matter as dangerous. He thought they should complement each other in our comprehension of reality. Professor Laurikainen here for the first time describes Pauli's ideas in detail. His book is based on the large and as yet unpublished correspondence between Pauli and M. Fierz. Its careful analysis adds depth and clarity to the few publications by Pauli on philosophical problems and explains why Pauli grasped the meaning of atomic theory more deeply than even Niels Bohr himself. The book should interest both philosophers and physicists and should encourage further studies on Pauli the humanist and his contribution to our understanding of reality.

When I meet a difficult problem, I begin to go around it, approaching it again and again from different directions. If I persistently continue these approaches, it can happen that no problem remains. (RolfNevanlinna, in a private discussion.) In 1976, after a mainly administrative period of some 15 years, I spent a couple of months at CERN, working in the Pauli Collection. When I found the Pauli-Fierz correspondence, I had the intuitive feeling that there was the key: that "it was an objective description, and that it was the only possible objective description" for the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Here I have cited Bohr in his 'last interview' (see Chap. 7), which I became acquainted with only later, but I was immediately convinced that Pauli's view was more profound than anything else I had read about in quantum mechanics. However, nowadays the investigation of the foundations of quantum theory is dominated by 'realism', which means that the influence of the psyche on our conception of reality is ignored. This book is an attempt to show that this is not possible in quantum mechanics.

Toivo Kärki (1915-1992) oli suomalaisen populaarimusiikin jättiläinen, jonka omia sävellyksiä on levytetty noin 1500 kappaletta. Hän teki musiikin myös 50 elokuvaan. Säveltämisen ohella Kärki sovitti suuren määrän muiden sävellyksiä ja koulutti maamme tärkeimpiä iskelmäsanoittajia. Hän löysi ja auttoi uralla eteenpäin kymmeniä laulajia, joista monet esiintyvät vielä tänäkin päivänä.Tämä teos kuvaa Toivo Kärjen elämänkaaren siten, että tarkastelun pääpaino on hänen musiikissaan. Hänen koko äänitetty tuotantonsa käydään läpi aikajärjestyksessä. Jokainen kappale vähintään mainitaan ja parhaat arvioidaan sellaisina, kuin ne äänitteiltä kuuluvat. Originaalien lisäksi myös tärkeimmät muut versiot kommentoidaan. Silmäys luodaan Kärjen laajaan julkaisemattomaan tuotantoon sekä hänen toimintaansa soittajana ja tuottajana. Musiikin rinnalla kulkee hänen elämäntarinansa, jota höystetään lehti- ja kirjallisuussitaatein sekä sukulaisten ja muiden aikalaisten muisteluksin. Erityisesti tilaa saavat Kärjen lukuisat työtoverit: sanoittajat, laulajat, soittajat ja sovittajat.Kirjan alkupuoli käsittelee Toivo Kärjen nuoruutta, ammattiuran alkua, sotavuosia, sodanjälkeistä aikaa sekä menestyksekästä yhteistyötä Reino Helismaan kanssa. Nuoruuden kiihkeä idealismi kehittyy vähitellen huippuammattilaisen monipuoliseksi musiikin tekemiseksi. Ajanjakso päättyy, kun Helismaa kuolee vuonna 1965.Teoksen jälkimmäinen puolisko esittelee Toivo Kärjen uran myöhemmät vaiheet. Tuolloin ajankohtaiseksi tulee työskenteleminen lukuisten uusien sanoittajien ja nuorten laulajien kanssa, musiikin uudet tuulet ja Kärjen sopeutuminen niihin, toisaalta oman suomalaisen linjan ylläpitäminen sekä aktiiviset eläkevuodet. Lisäksi selvitetään perinpohjaisesti Kärjen kuoleman jälkeen esille nostettu, ennen esittämätön materiaali aina 1930-luvulta alkaen. Kirjan lopussa on laaja henkilö- ja kappalehakemisto.Kalervo Kärki (s. 1945) on Toivo Kärjen kolmesta lapsesta nuorin. Hän teki ammattiuransa ensin Helsingin yliopiston teoreettisen fysiikan assistenttina, sitten Nilsiän lukion matematiikan, fysiikan ja kemian vanhempana lehtorina. Hän on syvällisesti perehtynyt vanhempaan suomalaiseen iskelmään, toki muuhunkin musiikkiin sen ympärillä. Tämän lisäksi hänen erikoisalansa on moderni jazz.
