When hurricane Angelita hits the Sargasso Sea, it brings down a plane carrying a team of star-quality swimmers, young men and women groomed from childhood to compete at the international level. Babe Delgado, a Cuban-American woman, survives - but barely, damaged in body and soul - and is recruited for a small university team. Coach Brenna Allen is tough, determined to build up Babe's strength, and driven to win. Ellie Marks, team captain, is a mediocre swimmer and the daughter of Holocaust survivors; she is struggling with her sexuality as much as she's working to win for Brenna - but she might have enough love in her to save Babe and herself. A sensitive, powerful tale of self-discovery, sexual identity, and violent emotions unleashed by sudden disaster, The Sea of Light is a haunting and brilliant novel.

Writer and founder of national online support group Caregiver Collective and herself a caregiver Jennifer N. Levin offers a comprehensive look at our current culture of care--with an emphasis on Millennial caregivers--providing a roadmap to solutions and an urgent call for policy change.More than 10 million Millennials are caring for aging parents before they've been able to fully launch their own careers and consider starting their own families, and that's not including the incalculable numbers of people affected by long COVID. Yet no one is naming this problem, talking about how it feels, or offering resources to ease the pressure of Millennial caregiver burnout. Jennifer N. Levin was 32 when her father was diagnosed with a rare degenerative illness. As she struggled with few resources and little support, she created Caregiver Collective, a national online support group for Millennial caregivers. Now Levin brings the wisdom from her own experience and that of her support group to Why Us?, a comprehensive look at this generation's culture of care. Filled with the voices of caregivers, expert commentary and research, and a roadmap to the solutions that can begin helping people now as well as build the policies of the future, Why Us? addresses:- The urgency of caregiving: With earlier (and better) detection of disease, along with a rise in chronic illness, the average age of a care recipient is younger than before--as is the average caregiver age.- The financial costs: Millennials spend a higher percentage of their income on caregiving and carry unprecedented student loan debt, adding to fiscally devastating out-of-pocket costs for care.- Ambiguous loss for caregivers: Caregiving can dictate caregivers' lifestyle choices; Millennial caregivers may grieve the lives they 'thought' they'd have.- The impact of COVID and long COVID: We're in a period of fluctuation with flex and remote work, which makes work and caregiving more compatible. How can we make sure that working caregivers' needs are honored?- Strategies for getting help on the individual level and in relation to policy. We, as a culture and society, talk about caregiving broadly-it's something many of us may think, "not us" or "we'll figure that out later." But caregiving is an increasingly urgent crisis. Why Us? brings this crisis to the fore, illuminates the real stories and people who are most affected, underscores the need for shifts in policy and giving support where it is most needed, and sounds a clarion call for change.

In addition to the overwhelming shock, pain, sadness, and grief, you may now feel unsafe in the world, out of control, or unable to carry out basic daily tasks. This gentle workbook can help guide you toward a place of healing and solace. The Traumatic Loss Workbook offers an integrative approach drawing on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), emotional regulation skills, mindfulness techniques, and narrative therapy to support you through the grief process, so you can move forward after the sudden or unexpected death of a loved one. You'll also discover strategies for dealing with sudden "grief attacks," and learn how to navigate common emotional triggers such as holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries. Finally, you'll discover skills to help you cope with the deeply emotional and traumatic aspects of your grief--now and in the future. Death is a natural part of life, but we never expect someone we love to die suddenly or unexpectedly. Jennifer Sey was on track to become the first woman CEO of Levi Strauss & Co. As the President of the Levi's brand, she was widely celebrated as a versatile and inspirational leader who had helped save the iconic brand from bankruptcy. Formerly a self-described "left of left of center" progressive, she was beloved as the embodiment of the company's "profits through principles" ethos. But everything changed when Sey publicly opposed the closure of San Francisco's public schools at the height of the pandemic. In response to her 'wrongthink, ' management gave her a choice: shut up or leave. She decided that defending at-risk children was more important than the job that she loved, and so she resigned. After more than two decades at the company, she gave up her professional future to retain her voice. In Levi's Unbuttoned, Sey recounts her remarkable journey from U.S. National Gymnastics champion through her rise up the corporate ladder at Levi's. As the highest profile executive to fall victim to the cancel culture engulfing America, her story is an inspiration for all those who, in these difficult times, feel pressured to remain silent on their most fundamental beliefs. The more Americans who stand up to "woke-ism," the better chance we have at creating a truly equitable and inclusive society. Principles and integrity matter. Ultimately, they matter more than anything else.

Do Facts Matter?

Do Facts Matter?

Jennifer L. Hochschild; Katherine Levine Einstein

University of Oklahoma Press
2016
nidottu
A democracy falters when most of its citizens are uninformed or misinformed, when misinformation affects political decisions and actions, or when political actors foment misinformation - the state of affairs the United States faces today, as this timely book makes painfully clear. In Do Facts Matter? Jennifer L. Hochschild and Katherine Levine Einstein start with Thomas Jefferson's ideal citizen, who knows and uses correct information to make policy or political choices. What, then, the authors ask, are the consequences if citizens are informed but do not act on their knowledge? More serious, what if they do act, but on incorrect information? Analyzing the use, nonuse, and misuse of facts in various cases - such as the call to impeach Bill Clinton, the response to global warming, Clarence Thomas's appointment to the Supreme Court, the case for invading Iraq, beliefs about Barack Obama's birthplace and religion, and the Affordable Care Act - Hochschild and Einstein argue persuasively that errors of commission (that is, acting on falsehoods) are even more troublesome than errors of omission. While citizens' inability or unwillingness to use the facts they know in their political decision making may be frustrating, their acquisition and use of incorrect ""knowledge"" pose a far greater threat to a democratic political system.Do Facts Matter? looks beyond individual citizens to the role that political elites play in informing, misinforming, and encouraging or discouraging the use of accurate or mistaken information or beliefs. Hochschild and Einstein show that if a well-informed electorate remains a crucial component of a successful democracy, the deliberate concealment of political facts poses its greatest threat.

Research lies at the heart of all academic disciplines. Research Within the Disciplines: Foundations for Reference and Library Instruction is an expansion of that concept. The book provides an overview of research practices and literacy standards in the various disciplines-humanities, music, social sciences, business, government publications, engineering, and sciences-to help shape library instruction and reference assistance. Conceived and developed by the reference librarians at the University of Denver, the book grew out of team discussions about teaching research and writing within the disciplines. The book's main objective is to provide a degree of orientation toward conducting research within specific disciplines and across others. The volume includes separate chapters on the broad disciplines covered in undergraduate education, as well as concluding chapters addressing interdisciplinary research and the role of instruction as a means of developing effective researchers. The continued necessity of understanding the foundations of research, whether within the physical library or via the electronic environment, remains an underlying concern, and the advice put forth by this team of practicing academic librarians is an important step to achieving this goal.
