In the spirit of All Are Welcome, this gentle picture book about being yourself and inspiring change in others follows sweet, plucky Linus who doesn't fit into the rigid confines of his straitlaced world--and learns that that's okay. Linus is trying his very best to stay in line, but everyone in Linneopolis is bent out of shape because he isn't square enough for them. When he's sent to an overnight camp to straighten out and build some character, Linus decides he's had enough. He's going to run away and find shapes that aren't so set in their ways. But what happens when he starts to miss home? Can he convince the population of Linneopolis to open up instead of shutting down? Or are they too boxed in to hear him out?

One of the few unquestioned greats of twentieth-century science, Linus Pauling was the only person to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes, one in chemistry, for deciphering the quantum physics of large molecules, and one in peace, for helping to end nuclear bomb testing. His brilliance was allied with a certain stubbornness, and when he died in 1994, at the age of 93, he was embroiled in controversy regarding his advocacy of vitamin C as a treatment for cancer. Based on thirty years of interviews, this masterful biography is filled with insights into the life and work of this complex, fascinating man.

Linus or Peter?

Linus or Peter?

Robert Geis

University Press of America
2009
nidottu
In Linus or Peter? The Question of Papal Infallibility, Geis argues that the Vatican I proclamation on papal infallibility is directly rendered uncertain, if not outright discredited and disproved, by three passages in Scripture (Mt. 18:18, Lk. 10:1-16, 1 Cor. 10:4). Lexical inquiry into other Scriptural passages dealing with the Scriptural terms "rock" and "cornerstone" solidify this claim. Scrutiny of Patristic sentiment adds to the evidence, as does dating Acts' record of Peter's missionary activities. History shows a tension between wayward papal conduct and dogmatic claims, as well as records of excommunicated popes. 18:18 argues, Geis claims, for the inerrancy of the Spirit's guidance witnessed in the practice and belief of the worldwide Christian community over the millennia. The Roman rite claim for a Divinely ordained Vicariate of authoritative pronouncements, having no Scriptural basis, emerges as an impediment to Christian unity, to Christ prayer "that they may be one" (Jn. 17:20-21).
Linus Pauling, Scientist and Peacemaker
One of the most brilliant scientists and most controversial individuals of the twentieth century, Linus Pauling was the only person to win two unshared Nobel Prizes. This unique volume, first published to mark the centenary of Pauling?s birth, gathers his words and those of his contemporaries and students, together with photographs, drawings, and reproductions from the Pauling Papers. Pauling (1901-1994) was known for being outspoken and for leaping over scientific boundaries?from physics to chemistry to biology to medical research. This collection draws a vivid portrait of a remarkable man?scientist, humanist, and activist?highlighting his larger-than-life personality and his singular achievements. As both scientist and citizen, Pauling was passionate and deeply thoughtful. He wrote The Nature of the Chemical Bond, one of the most cited sources in scientific history, and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. He risked his reputation during the McCarthy years as a vocal opponent of Cold War policies and nuclear proliferation. As a result, he was vilified by the press, investigated by the FBI, and awarded the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize. In the 1970s, Pauling again gained international recognition, this time for his advocacy of megadoses of vitamin C as a cure for cancer and cold prevention.
