"In Piccolo's poems we meet a Sicily latent in the country of the tourist guides and the history books, but it was Piccolo far more than, say, his cousin Lampedusa, who was destined to draw out the latencies, read the signatures, crack the code...These brilliant translations will serve to introduce a whole new sensibility to Anglo-American readers."--Anthony Burgess "Faithfulness, a loving adherence, a communion with and an entering into the spirit of the original are what we look for in a translation. We find these qualities abundantly in this rendering of Lucio Piccolo's poetry by Brian Swarm and Ruth Feldman. And we find yet more: a welcome clarification, for though Piccolo's poetry--one that tries to capture in a subtle web the atmosphere of a bygone world--is not obscure or oblique, yet, like all significant poetry, it is here and there open to a number of interpretations. Swann's and Feldman's translation, or interpretation, seems to me always felicitous and intelligent."--Arturo Vivante Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Best known for the slashed and cut canvases--and related spatial environments--of the Concetti spaziali that he created primarily in the 1950s and 60s, Argentine–Italian artist Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) trained as a sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and used ceramics and clay modeling to explore larger problems in sculpture and painting. Lucio Fontana: Sculpture is published in conjunction with the first U.S. museum exhibition dedicated solely to the artist’s groundbreaking ceramic work, and explores the innovative and often contrarian ways in which Fontana made use of the medium. With a foreword by Aspen Art Museum CEO and Director, Chief Curator, Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson, the publication collects landmark text by Jan van der Marck, Paolo Campiglio and Lucio Fontana himself, and features thoughts on Fontana’s influence from contemporary sculptors Kathy Butterly, Charles Long and Katy Schimert.

This is the first English language technical study of one of the most important Italian artists of the post-WWII period. Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative post-World War II Italian artists. Best known for his tagli - slashed, mostly monochromatic canvases - Fontana fashioned a remarkably multifaceted oeuvre that encompasses architecture, sculpture, and ceramics, as well as painting. In his quest to expand the vocabulary of his art, Fontana subjected the pictorial surface of his paintings to a remarkable assortment of punctures, gashes, and slashes, as well as adornments of glass fragments, glittering aluminium flakes, and sand. This richly illustrated book presents the first technical study in English of this important painter. Initial chapters present an informative overview of Fontana's life and work.

Most of the subjects of Lucio Bubacco's (b. 1957) glass art are provocative and polarising; at the same time they are sensual and beguiling. In a kind of erotic 'trance dance' - Mephistophelian and frequently riotous - nightmarish fabulous creatures and mythological phantasms virtually undulate about each other. His technical virtuosity in creative execution is unparalleled, for the Murano-born glass artist has elevated the Venetian flame technique to a new level of skill and complexity. Bubacco has captured human feelings and emotions in the masterly play of gestures and muscles of the glass figures featured in his burlesque installations. Full of wit and irony he thus explores the limits of kitsch without overstepping them. Follow him into a world of carnevalesque orgies, crystalline incubi and erotic fantasies in glass!
