American historians have long been fascinated by the "peopling" of North America in the seventeenth century. Who were the immigrants, and how and why did they make their way across the ocean? Most of the attention, however, has been devoted to British immigrants who came as free people or as indentured servants (primarily to New England and the Chesapeake) and to Africans who were forced to come as slaves. Trade in Strangers focuses on the eighteenth century, when new immigrants began to flood the colonies at an unprecedented rate. Most of these immigrants were German and Irish, and they were coming primarily to the middle colonies via an increasingly sophisticated form of transport.Wokeck shows how first the German system of immigration, and then the Irish system, evolved from earlier, haphazard forms into modern mass transoceanic migration. At the center of this development were merchants on both sides of the Atlantic who organized a business that enabled them to make profitable use of underutilized cargo space on ships bound from Europe to the British North American colonies. This trade offered German and Irish immigrants transatlantic passage on terms that allowed even people of little and modest means to pursue opportunities that beckoned in the New World.Trade in Strangers fills an important gap in our knowledge of America's immigration history. The eighteenth-century changes established a model for the better-known mass migrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which drew wave after wave of Europeans to the New World in the hope of making a better life than the one they left behind—a story that is familiar to most modern Americans.

For fans of Wild Wild Country, Scientology and the Aftermath and Uncover: Escaping NXIVM, a stunning graphic memoir about a teenage girl who was lured into a cult and later fought to escape and reclaim her identity. Welcome to a place where you are valued. Where everyone is kind. Where you can be your truest self. In 1980, Marianne Boucher felt like a misfit. To the world, she was a high school student with a bright future as a powerhouse figure skater. But she always felt like she was performing--both on the ice and off. And then she found her people. Kind, open-minded and totally different. They didn't care about society's norms and expectations--they valued authenticity and compassion above all else. And they liked her. Not Marianne the performance, but Marianne the person, stripped of her veneer. Soon, she'd abandoned school, her skating and, most dramatically, her family to live with her new friends and help them fulfill their mission of "changing the world." She was sure the sacrifices they asked of her would be worth it. They were helping people, and they cared about her . . . didn't they?Talking to Strangers is the true story of Marianne Boucher's experiences in a cult that brainwashed her and took over her life. Told in stunning graphic memoir form, with vivid text and art alike, Marianne shares how she fell in with the Unification Church--or the "Moonies"--and how she eventually, painfully, pulled herself out.

Lily Novak's life in Crystal Cove, Maine is just about perfect. She has a great group of friends, runs a successful day spa, and has managed to build her new life without anyone asking about her mysterious past. There's nothing more she could want...except maybe to catch the eye of the gorgeous and introverted carpenter, who also happens to be her friend's brother. Ty Parker knew fear in the Army, but nothing like the panic of seeing smoke billow from Lily's building. When a dryer fire brings him face to face with the heart-stopping Lily Novak-and her lacy black thong-he can't deny the chemistry sparking between them. As their feelings deepen, Lily's evasiveness reignites the self-doubt Ty has been battling for years. Lily knows her secrets are putting her relationship with Ty at risk, but telling him the truth puts both their lives in danger. She's just not sure she's strong enough to sacrifice her heart to keep the man she loves safe from the secrets of her past.

"I'm what's been made of me, a product of someone else's depravity. There are scars going deeper than the eye can see, they're carved into our blood, placed there by the actions of others. You, of all people, should know this. Threatening Caius was the only way I knew of to assure your undivided attention. If you couldn't love me, at least you'd hate me. But you would notice me."What secrets hide in Marianne's past? After being thrown to a time portal by Nora Bell's magic, Marianne finds herself face to face with her own past, one she must now share with Marcus. Will witnessing the life events, that led to having met her at Stuart Harlow's mansion, change the way he sees her? And will his worry about having left Cai alone, back in their own time, allow him to stay focused and clear headed, around a woman who once held such allure over him? Will Cai and Nora find a way to bring Marcus back from the past? And will they condemn Marianne to stay locked there, with her own demons?
