Called ‘a master of timeless American style’ by Vogue, Markham Roberts is renowned for his boundless creativity and ability to work in a wide range of styles. In this, his second book, he examines his working method, identifying the key elements of a project and explaining how he addresses them. He begins with his top priority – taking into account his clients’ point of view by interpreting their needs and reflecting their style, rather than imposing his own vision. In the process, he helps them focus and edit, respecting their wishes while making it work. Other elements include establishing a sense of place, layering and embellishing to make spaces more personal and interesting, acknowledging the need for practicality in the choice of materials, and doing the unexpected, from upholstering walls to mixing disparate materials and styles of furniture. Throughout, specially commissioned photographs of an array of his latest projects illustrate his solutions to the challenges each of the elements pose. He concludes the book with a chapter on a single project that encompasses all of the elements, making this book a must-have resource for anyone interested in interior design.

This biography of the naval officer and explorer Sir Albert Hastings Markham (1841–1918) was published in 1927 by two relatives (both professional authors), using the detailed journals which he kept from 1862. Markham was the cousin of Sir Clements Markham, the historian and geographer, and was greatly influenced by him. Having volunteered for Arctic service, he was rejected by the Admiralty, but took a period of leave in which he went to Baffin Bay as second mate on a whaler. (His account of this voyage, and several other works, are also reissued in this series.) Though best remembered for his Arctic exploration, Markham was involved in active service in China, the Mediterranean and Australian waters, and in the training of naval recruits. He continued in the Royal Navy until 1906, and in his retirement continued to encourage polar exploration, serving for many years on the Council of the Royal Geographical Society.

Fama Fraternitatis Confessio Fraternitatis Chemical WeddingIn the early 17th century three documents were published which came to be known as 'The Rosicrucian Manifestos'. These books promoted a reformation of mankind and spirituality and professed to reveal a hitherto unknown 'secret society' based upon the teachings and discoveries of a man referred to as Christian Rosencreutz. Rosicrucian thought became highly influential throughout Europe and many publications based on or discussing the manifestos were written. It influenced such notable writers as Robert Fludd, Michael Maier and Elias Ashmole, as well as influencing Freemasonry.Rosicrucian societies such as the Societas Rosicruciana In Anglia, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and AMORC still operate to the present day with thousands of members worldwide. The Rosicrucian Manifestos themselves comprised the Fama Fraternitatis (1614), the Confessio Fraternitatis (1615) and the Chemical Wedding (1616). First published in German and Latin, an English version of the Fama Fraternitatis published in 1652 by Thomas Vaughan, brought the documents to an English-speaking audience. Markham's Brotherhood takes the original manifestos and presents them in an easily accessible Modern English version with explanatory notes to enlighten the reader and offering greater depth without obstructing the reading experience. Illustrated throughout with a mixture of traditional and original drawings, this new edition of the founding Rosicrucian writings brings them to life for the modern reader.
