EDDIE charts the incredible rise of Edward Joseph McGuire AM from his childhood in the working-class Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows, through his nightclub days as an ambitious young sports reporter to the heights of Australian television, politics, radio and the AFL.The son of a former Glaswegian coalminer who wanted a better life for his family, Eddie was born in Australia and grew up in a housing commission home in Melbourne. As a teenager he was already showing the hardworking traits that would see him become a multimillionaire and self-made man. After winning a scholarship to Christian Brothers he started his working life as a cadet sports reporter that would lead to his rise to the presidency of arguably the most popular football club in the land, Collingwood; his creation of Channel Nine's 'The Footy Show'; his ascent to become Australian television's 'Eddie Everywhere' before his unlikely appointment as Nine's CEO and 'Five Million Dollar Man'; as well as his political ambitions, including his role alongside Malcolm Turnbull heading the republican campaign.Covering Eddie McGuire's many triumphs, feuds, his missteps, his successes, the turnaround of his beloved Magpies and his seemingly unstoppable rise, this is the inspiring and unique story of the ultimate working-class boy made good.

Life in Bodega Bay on the rugged, foggy coast of northern California has been pretty quiet since Alfred Hitchcock filmed The Birds there. But antiques dealer Toby Sandler learns that his new business partner Charlie has been found dead on an abandoned boat in the harbor. When the local sheriff discovers that Charlie’s newly acquired Hitchcock artifacts and a painting of an angel are missing, he enlists Toby and his wife, Nora Barnes, an art historian, in the investigation.Local tales about Hitchcock’s famous film, and some digging into the region’s past as a Russian outpost, provide Toby and Nora with clues to the existence of a lost masterpiece. Convinced that this forgotten work may hold the key to the murder, Nora and Toby set out to find it. When Nora’s trouble-prone sister Angie arrives, events take a surprising turn, leading to the uncanny realm of angel reading and putting Nora and her family in danger. As Nora and Toby investigate matters both criminal and otherworldly, Nora realizes that some mysteries in life may be too deep to solve.

Voyage to the Northwest Coast of America, 1792

Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra; Chief Michael Maguinna

In 1792, Spanish naval officer and explorer Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra sailed from San Blas, Mexico, to Nootka Sound, on the west coast of present-day Vancouver Island. For nearly three years, he had been immersed in the aftermath of the Nootka Crisis of 1789, a dispute between Britain and Spain over sovereignty in the North Pacific. He was journeying north as his government’s commissioner to hand over Spanish-occupied territory at Nootka. This book offers the first published English translation of Bodega’s journal, a remarkable account of his travels along the Northwest Coast of America, encounters with Native peoples—most notably, Chief Maquinna—and the friendship that developed between Bodega and his British counterpart, George Vancouver.Until now, Bodega’s journal has been available only in Spanish publications or in manuscript form. This much-needed English-language edition results from the collaboration of three preeminent scholars of the Pacific Northwest, who provide an in-depth introduction and extensive footnotes that make the translation accessible to a contemporary audience. Also included in this edition is a generous selection of Bodega’s original charts and illustrations created by the artists who worked with JosÉ Mariano MoziÑo and JosÉ Maldonado, two scientists who—at Bodega’s insistence—accompanied him on his expedition to Nootka.

Almost every energy scenario assumes an enormous growth in the demand for energy in the coming decades. Meanwhile, at international conferences and other venues, the primary concern is massive reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, especially of the CO2 produced by fossil-fuel energy consumption. Experts also point out the political risk of depending on petroleum and remind us of the fact that resources are not inexhaustible. This timely book explores: how these conflicting scenarios could be reconciled; how can we shape a more sustainable energy system from the existing one; and possible technological progress and innovations to enable a brighter future. It also addresses the reality that there exists no consensus on the extent to which innovations can really contribute to reconciling ever-growing energy consumption, availability of resources and the environment, and the structural demands on any energy system.
