A 2024 LAMBDA AWARD FINALIST"This enchanting, modern homage to Pinocchio reminds us anything is possible if we're true to ourselves." --Cynthia Leitich Smith, award-winning author of Ancestor Approved and Sisters of the NeverseaEleven-year-old Matteo has never felt like one of the other boys. He's sure that will change when he joins the Blue Whales, the baseball team his dad once played for. This is his chance to grow into a son his father can be proud of.And grow Matteo does, but not the way he expected. Instead, he starts sprouting leaves and finding bark all over his skin. Alarmed, Matteo starts digging for the truth about what's happening to him--and finds that all clues lead back to the oak tree at the center of town, which Creeksiders have always believed is a little bit magic. As his parents start noticing something is wrong, the truth gets harder to hide--and Matteo makes some surprising discoveries about himself, his hometown, and his entire family tree. From Michael Leali, author of The Civil War of Amos Abernathy, this earnest deconstruction of what it means to be a "real boy" is full of humor and heart, and a surefire home run for readers of Mark Oshiro, Anne Ursu, and Katherine Applegate.
Anthroposophical Leading Thoughts I: The Cognitional Path of Anthroposophy - The Mystery of Michael
This is one of Steiner's very most important books. Written on what would turn out to be his deathbed, it contains summaries of all of anthroposophy in the lapidary form of epigrams. This is the first of seven volumes. Steiner sought to reorganize and re-energize the Society in the aftermath of the Christmas Conference held in 1923/1924. The aphorisms contained herein were one way of making possible a kind of "concerted action" guided by the Goetheanum. A few highlights: First we must realize that the world cannot ever answer the question who we are; it can only destroy us. To answer that question ultimately, we have to develop Imagination, Inspiration, and Intuition. Deep insight into human nature is provided when we view ourselves "pictorially," like a picture being at first intuited by the painter, and only becoming of finished painting after a long imaginative and inspired process. The volume includes two appendices, with selections from The Life, Nature, and Cultivation of Anthroposophy, and Carl Unger's marvelous reflections on the Leading Thoughts in aphoristic form.
Anthroposophical Leading Thoughts 2: The Cognitional Path of Anthroposophy - The Mystery of Michael
Rudolf Steiner continues in this second installment of the Leading Thoughts to recast anthroposophy in a more succinct, coherent, and elegant form. He covers six main topics: Consciousness in the primordial past, Michael as the Ruler of Thoughts, how the Leading Thoughts are to be used, karma, dreams and higher levels of knowledge, and the Hierarchies. An austere clarity is born of brevity, making this book unsuitable for those new to anthroposophy.
The Leasing of Guantanamo Bay

The Leasing of Guantanamo Bay

Michael J. Strauss

Post-2002 events at the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo Bay have generated a spate of books on its use as a detention center in the U.S. fight against terrorism. Yet the crucial enabling factor-the lease that gave the U.S. control over the territory in Cuba-has till now escaped any but cursory consideration. The Leasing of Guantanamo Bay explains just how Guantanamo Bay came to be a leased territory where the U.S. has no sovereignty and Cuba has no jurisdiction. This is the first definitive account of the details and workings of the unusual and problematic state-to-state leasing arrangement that is the essential but murky foundation for all the ongoing controversies about Guantanamo Bay's role in U.S. anti-terrorism efforts, charges of U.S. human rights violations, and U.S.-Cuban relations. The Leasing of Guantanamo Bay provides an overview of territorial leasing between states and shows how it challenges, compromises, and complicates established notions of sovereignty and jurisdiction. Strauss unfolds the history of the Guantanamo Bay, recounting how the U.S. has deviated widely from the original terms of the lease yet never been legally challenged by Cuba, owing to the strong state-weak state dynamics. The lease is a hodge-podge of three U.S.-Cuba agreements full of discrepancies and uncorrected errors. Cuba's failure to cash the annual rent checks of the U.S. has legal implications not only for the future of Guantanamo Bay but of the Westphalian system of states. Compiled for the first time in one place are the verbatim texts of all the key documents relevant to the Guantanamo Bay lease-including treaties and other agreements, a previously unpublished U.N. legal assessment, and once-classified government correspondence.

Thanks to global news and social media, we are the most informed and socially conscious generation in history. But what are the sources of inner inspiration that guide our daily conduct and motivations in the workplace? Far from the old Machiavellian dictum that "the ends justify the means", the reverse is often the case: the means determine the ends. This book presents the stories of business leaders who have aimed to build trust in the economy, and have delivered value through integrity, cooperation, stewardship, purpose and sustainability. It proposes the eight Cs of trust which can define the culture of organizations: contracts, covenants, competences, character, conscience, conviction, courage and change. The book makes the clear link between personal decision-making and global outcomes and demonstrates how positive decision-making can lead to change inside organizations and beyond.

Beyond Strategy: Leading Your Organization To Remarkable Growth
Why "Beyond Strategy"?Many people find strategy intimidating, complex, or abstract, but it doesn't have to be.This book presents a new way of thinking about strategy that is uniquely based upon the Purpose-Driven Growth Model (PDG), in which your organization's purpose and profitability is key to guiding its growth. It explores strategy concisely and thoughtfully, examining what the concept encompasses and how strategies can be constructed in a fast-changing and uncertain world. It illustrates the differences between strategies that flourish and strategies that languish, and delves into the reasons driving each outcome. It offers comprehensive thinking, and tools which view strategy holistically, emphasizing how to lead organizations towards sustainable growth and exceptional performance. The PDG Model sketches out a practical hybrid of strategy and leadership, that must be unified to fulfill organizational purpose, create growth, and deliver profits. Leadership without strategy is futile, and strategy without leadership is doomed. The two must synchronize to produce effective results. If you want to learn more about strategy and how it really (really) works, read this book. It is based on 30 years of immersion in the field of strategy, and also on scholarly work with great minds at Harvard and Princeton universities.

Hybrid working on a large scale arrived suddenly with the COVID-19 pandemic. And it’s here to stay. Going beyond the quick-fix solutions that emerged during the transition, this book takes a deeper, systems approach to leading a hybrid organisation to help managers understand the real, ‘beneath the surface’ issues in hybrid working.Established ways of managing everyday problems, such as workflow, communication and performance management, now seem inadequate when some members of staff are in the office and others are working remotely. In addition to day-to-day management tasks, there are also more complex challenges such as developing a cohesive team and organisational culture and a strong attachment to the organisation. Drawing on contemporary management theory, behavioural science, psychoanalysis and social psychology, the book explains the impacts and how to address areas such as: team and organisational identity; recruitment and retention of talent; personality and hybrid working; team dynamics; performance management; security and insider risk; well-being, burnout and engagement; diversity equality and inclusion; ESG; and handling conflict. This engaging book empowers leaders and managers by enabling them to understand the dynamics of hybrid working, and giving them the tools to influence these processes to improve their effectiveness in the organisation.

Creativity, the generation of novel and useful ideas, and innovation, the transformation of these ideas into new products, processes, and services, are both critical for the long-term viability, profitability, and growth of organizations. Moreover, the complex, risky, and uncertain nature of innovative efforts demonstrates the importance of organizational leaders to effectively manage the innovative process. In this element, we discuss the role of leaders in effectively facilitating the creative problem-solving process that gives rise to innovative products, processes, and services. More specifically, we highlight the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to effectively lead across three integrated facets of this process-leading the people, leading the work, and leading the firm. This discussion promotes an understanding of how leaders manage those asked to engage in innovative efforts and, moreover, how leaders systematically integrate creative ideas within the organization to ensure the development and success of innovative products, processes, or services.
