Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius

Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius

Jack Stillinger

Oxford University Press Inc
1991
sidottu
Most theories of interpretation and editing depend on a concept of single authorship. But literary works can and frequently do have multiple authors, sometimes with divided and even conflicting intentions among them. Stillinger explores multiple authorship in the case of Keats and his helpers who assisted in the creation of Isabella; John Stuart Mill and his wife in the writing of Mill's Autobiography; the author revising earlier versions of himself, as with Wordsworth in The Prelude; and the author interacting collaboratively with sources and influences (Coleridge in Biographia Literaria).
Multiple Authorship
The cover of this book shows a closely-knit community of artists and craftsmen which was portrayed in 1615 by the Augsburg painter Anton Mozart. It is representative of the general aesthetic practice during the pre-modern period of creating artefacts collaboratively – and suggests that such collaboration was the norm rather than the exception. The notion of creativity hence was vastly different from the highly influential narrative of aesthetic autonomy that emerged later. The present volume is linked to the interdisciplinary work at the Collaborative Research Center 1391 Different Aesthetics and presents a first systematic approach to the complex cultural-historical phenomenon of multiple authorship.

Herb Society of America

Founded in 1933, The Herb Society of America was less than a decade old when the Second World War began in Europe. Culinary and medicinal herbs, formerly imported from Europe, became difficult to obtain due to a persistent attack on shipping vessels. Soon the European sage supply was cut off, and a shortage of digitalis was predicted. Commercial growers, truck farmers, and drug companies, wondering if these herbs might be grown profitably in America, sought advice from The Herb Society of America. In response, The Society's members - who had no experience growing the large quantities of herbs required - created and monitored test plots, recording and sharing the results, and distributing seed. Throughout the war, The Herb Society of America endeavored to share the results of their research with farmers and housewives alike. In these reproduced issues of The Herbarist, originally published between 1940-44, members of The Society write about their experiences during The War Years, and their hopes for the future of the herb-growing industry.

Welcome to the Yard. It doesn't matter if you're on the inside, as an inmate, or a guard. Nor does it matter if you are on the outside, as a friend, or family member visiting a loved one who's incarcerated. Everyone's here in the Yard. Everyone is locked up.It's been called a dozen different names or more, in as many different versions and incarnations: Jail, Lockup, The Slammer, Prison, The Joint, Juvy, Correctional Facility, Reformatory, Asylum, Cuckoo's Nest, Crazy House, Boot Camp, Penitentiary, Stockade, Dungeon, The Cooler, The Can, Guardhouse, The Pen, Statesville, Bullpen, Pound, House of Correction, Up the River, Detention Camp, The Rack, The Inside, The Cage, Penal Institution, Clink, The Black Hole.Called by any number of names, it all amounts to one thing: You're no longer FREE. Routledge Library Editions: Agri-Business and Land Use
In a world where food security is key and the effects of climate change, labour shortages and rising costs are a daily reality for farmers across the globe, the quest for a satisfactory and viable policy for agriculture has a continuing interest as relevant today as when these 26 books were first published between 1928 and 1994. Trading relations and trade deals in the sphere of agribusiness are also once again under the spotlight following the UK’s departure from Europe. Challenges for the 21st century are balancing the needs of agronomics – the production of food under the most economic, competitive yet sustainable conditions, alongside the effective use of land to satisfy the multiple demands upon it. The volumes in this set address these complex issues from a variety of global viewpoints encompassing economic, political, geographic and environmental perspectives.

The Seven Ironical Stories: Anton Chehov, Leo Tolstoy, Arkadiy Averchenko, Teffy
"My pain may be the reason for somebody's laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody's pain." - Charlie ChaplinThis book includes selected works of satire and humor of Russian writers in the second half of XIX - early XX. These are familiar to the Western reader-Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy, and much less well-known-Teffy and Arkady Averchenko. The stories presented to your attention touch upon the tradition for the classical literature theme of the "little man." Each story is a dramatic sketch-a miniature. Teffy's stories can be a real discovery for a sophisticated reader. She was called the "Queen of Russian Humor." Teffy defined her worldview as Spinoza's philosophical expression, "laughter is joy, and therefore good in itself." Teffy's quotes: "I hate the word 'never.' If I were told that I would never have a headache, for example, I would probably be scared.""No one advises as much as a fool.""Do not be afraid. What you are afraid already came."
