The late nineteenth century was a period of tremendous upheaval in American race relations. But while studies abound documenting the changes in relations between whites and African Americans in the northern and southern states during this time, few historians have tackled this topic in the lands of the frontier West or sought to understand how Native Americans figured into the nation's complex racial mix. In Contested Territory, Murray R. Wickett offers the first complete history of the interaction among whites, Native Americans, and African Americans in the Indian and Oklahoma Territories from the end of the Civil War until Oklahoma statehood in 1907, addressing questions about the nature of American race relations, the answers to which far transcend the territorial boundaries of the region.Since, by the late 1800s, the Indian and Oklahoma Territories were the only place where the three ""founding"" cultures of American society co-existed in significant numbers, the area provides an excellent case study in the contrasting racial policies aimed at separate ethnic groups. As Wickett shows, racial separation versus integration sparked a bitter debate that factionalized both blacks and Indians. While white government officials and humanitarian reformers sought- and often forced- the assimilation of Native peoples into Anglo-American society, they strove, at the same time, to secure the strict segregation of African Americans. As African Americans desperately fought a losing battle to maintain their civil rights, Native Americans, for the most part, rejected the benefits white society encouraged them to accept.Wickett tells his fascinating and complex story with a mix of sources that includes poems, anecdotes, and particularly well-chosen pictures. Through government records, newspapers, diaries, and oral history interviews, he also allows those who experienced the temper of the times first hand to speak for themselves.
Let this down-to-earth book be your guide to the statistical integrity of your work. Without relying on the detailed and complex mathematical explanations found in many other statistical texts, Principles of Experimental Design for the Life Sciences teaches how to design, conduct, and interpret top-notch life science studies. Learn about the planning of biomedical studies, the principles of statistical design, sample size estimation, common designs in biological experiments, sequential clinical trials, high dimensional designs and process optimization, and the correspondence between objectives, design, and analysis. Each of these important topics is presented in an understandable and non-technical manner, free of statistical jargon and formulas. Written by a biostatistical consultant with 25 years of experience, Principles of Experimental Design for the Life Sciences is filled with real-life examples from the author's work that you can quickly and easily apply to your own. These examples illustrate the main concepts of experimental design and cover a broad range of application areas in both clinical and nonclinical research. With this one innovative, helpful book you can improve your understanding of statistics, enhance your confidence in your results, and, at long last, shake off those statistical shackles!

This insightful economic survey provides data on how farm incomes and expenses are projected to affect tax-paying abilities through the Merced Irrigation District. The survey also offers a look at the historical data of taxation and revenue for this important water district in the central valley of California. Benedict's report will be a valuable resource for economists and those interested in the history of irrigation districts in the area. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Algebraic Operads: An Algorithmic Companion presents a systematic treatment of Gröbner bases in several contexts. The book builds up to the theory of Gröbner bases for operads due to the second author and Khoroshkin as well as various applications of the corresponding diamond lemmas in algebra. The authors present a variety of topics including: noncommutative Gröbner bases and their applications to the construction of universal enveloping algebras; Gröbner bases for shuffle algebras which can be used to solve questions about combinatorics of permutations; and operadic Gröbner bases, important for applications to algebraic topology, and homological and homotopical algebra. The last chapters of the book combine classical commutative Gröbner bases with operadic ones to approach some classification problems for operads. Throughout the book, both the mathematical theory and computational methods are emphasized and numerous algorithms, examples, and exercises are provided to clarify and illustrate the concrete meaning of abstract theory.
First developed in the early 1980s by Lenstra, Lenstra, and Lovász, the LLL algorithm was originally used to provide a polynomial-time algorithm for factoring polynomials with rational coefficients. It very quickly became an essential tool in integer linear programming problems and was later adapted for use in cryptanalysis. This book provides an introduction to the theory and applications of lattice basis reduction and the LLL algorithm. With numerous examples and suggested exercises, the text discusses various applications of lattice basis reduction to cryptography, number theory, polynomial factorization, and matrix canonical forms.

Research in Business and Marketing sets out to provide readers with an overview of the entire research process in an abbreviated and concise format. It provides examples of quantitative analytical techniques based on SPSS and Excel to give readers the opportunity to execute research processes. It also gives readers the capability to analyze, gather, and interpret data to arrive at answers to research questions. This text takes a path which leads to an understanding of the development, use, and meaning of selected statistics, which will be primarily developed though the execution and analysis of SPSS and Excel statistical functions as they relate to a specified dataset.

One of the most popular series from Argosy's later years, Murray R. Montgomery penned a number of stories chronicling the adventures of Her Majesty's Guard Richard Cleve and French cavalier Monsieur le Comte Guy d'Entreville... partners and rakehellies of the Cardinal's Guard and in the service of Cardinal Richelieu in seventeenth-century France. Much-revered and enjoyed by thousands of Argosy readers, these fast-paced stories have never before been reprinted. Collecting the final two stories in the series.
Having finally escaped the prison mines Jon and his companions are led by their dwarven ally, Rodack, to his people's mountain home. Rather than an opportunity for much needed rest, they find the dwarves, together with their elven allies desperately preparing for an epic battle as Cravos' massive army boxes them in. The elves and dwarves are able to give Jon tantalizing clues about the nature of this world and its relationship with his own. He learns that if he can survive the battle, he and his friends must travel to the shrouded city of Corbenik to meet and be empowered by the maker of Vandermine. It is only if they are so prepared that Jon's team of champions stands any chance in the final confrontation with Cravos before he can trigger the prophesied second apocalypse.
