Tears poured from my eyes as I thought of Cole. I wanted to feel his arms around me; I wanted to feel safe. Would I ever see him again? Of course, I would Cole was coming for me. I just had to be patient; he would come.Seeing movement out of the corner of my eye, I looked back down into the garden below, it was Alarnon He was standing by a statue. Was it him? It was hard to tell for sure, as he was standing in the shadows. A moment later he stepped into the light and I smiled; it was definitely Alarnon. If he was here, were the others as well? Was Cole here? Had they come for me? Were they going to rescue me tonight? I saw another man walking towards Alarnon. As he passed a lamp-stand I recognized him too; Andrew. Alarnon moved from his hiding spot and the two began to speak. Why were Andrew and Alarnon speaking? Weren't they on opposite sides? Was Alarnon only pretending to be on Cole's side? Was that the reason he was so upset when he found out that Cole and I had gotten married? Was he the one who alerted Gabriel of my whereabouts when I was in Lake City? All these thoughts, and more, were running through my head as I watched the two speak. Minutes later they parted. Andrew began making his way back towards the palace, while Alarnon quickly disappeared into the garden. How I wished I could have heard their conversation. And what now? Did this mean that Cole was not coming for me? Did this mean that Cole was in danger?

I stood in Lindsey's bathroom after school that day, staring at all four pregnancy tests; all positive. There was no wait... as soon as I peed on each stick, the blue line appeared. "My parents are going to kill me." "Perhaps," Lindsey replied. "But I know my parents are going to kill Toby." I closed the lid on the toilet, then sat. "What am I going to do? I am fifteen. I can't have a baby " "Ready or not, you are having a baby." Fifteen and pregnant. Rachel never thought she would be an unwed, pregnant teen. Especially not pregnant with Toby's baby, the preacher's son. What was she to do? Should she keep the baby? Should she have an abortion? After all Rachel was not a Christian. She did not hold to the same beliefs as her best friend Lindsey, Toby's sister, and their family did. Join Rachel on this coming-of-age story, as she experiences life's up and downs, searching for hope, truth, and peace. Will she ever find her happily ever after?

School violence is a burning issue these days. This book provides an in-depth analysis of violence prevention programs and an assessment of their effectiveness, using data from observations, individual interviews, and focus groups, as well as published data from the schools. It is distinguished by its focus on the cultural and structural context of school violence and violence prevention efforts. Where most other researchers use quantitative measures, such as surveys, to assess the effectiveness of violence prevention programs, the authors of this book use qualitative research and ethnography to study the environment where such programs take place. Thus, this work--one of only a few ethnographic studies of violence prevention programs in schools--links previous quantitative research on the topic and critical ethnography. Preventing Violence in Schools: A Challenge to American Democracy: *includes voices of school students, accused of practicing violence, who have been participants in violence prevention programs; *analyzes a citywide peer mediation program (who benefits and who does not, who is mediated and who mediates, and what the implications of these findings may be); *examines the kinds of violence recognized in schools and the ways schools themselves may perpetuate violence; and *describes a violence prevention program for students at an alternative school.Preventing Violence in Schools: A Challenge to American Democracy is highly relevant for students in courses on urban education, foundations of education, education and social policy, youth and the law, and qualitative research, and for teachers, administrators, and other professionals, such as school psychologists and guidance counselors, at the middle and high school levels.
