In this collection by Detroit-based artist Pat Duff, she has curated a selection of her works of erotic art, rendered primarily in pastels and charcoal. "I choose to exclude no part of life and feel that the lowest vulgarity, poverty, and obscenity is the stuff of life which is the most real", says Duff. "It is a common error to suppose that beauty can be brought about in art only through the representation of beautiful things or through the use of obviously pleasing shapes. Objects, actions, or mere shapes, which in ordinary life would be unbearably repellent, can become sources of pleasure in art, not because they have a morbid appeal but because they allow us to come to terms, in art, with the horrors and the pains which would overwhelm us in real life. Without the contrast of ugliness, beauty would be insipid. Ugliness is part of the conflict resolved through art with harmony."
I was a caregiver for my husband who had vascular dementia for 15 years. Seven years ago he went into a nursing facility. I visited every day. I became acutely aware of the disease and its consequences. As an artist, I have executed seven drawings about Alzheimer's with seven accompanying poems that illustrate the seven stages of its progression. Since his death, it is my intention to share this information with those individuals whose loved ones have been recently diagnosed with the disease.
How can one explain the general failure of the social sciences to accumulate reliable knowledge? According to Pat Duffy Hutcheon the social sciences have failed us in the twentieth century. Practitioners in the social realm (such as politicians, therapists, educators and economists) are unable to provide the answers we seek to meet the challenges of our everyday lives and the next millennium. In Leaving the Cave Hutcheon explores the reasons for this failure. In this pioneering study of the development of social and biological evolutionary theory she contends that, for the first time in history, there exists a paradigm capable of integrating the life sciences and the social/behavioural sciences, a model to make effective social science a reality. To illustrate her arguments Hutcheon traces the development of a current of thought she identifies as evolutionary naturalism.She focuses on the lives and writings of those thinkers who have most illuminated this philosophy, from the Hellenic Greeks, through the works of the early pioneers of modern social scientific thought, to the social theorists of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries whose ideas have been firmly rooted in the Darwinian and Pavlovian revolutions in biology and neuroscience. Leaving the Cave is an innovative, multidisciplinary study of the development of social science, the philosophy of evolutionary naturalism and the effect of each on the other. Certain to arouse controversy, this is a book which everyone concerned for the future of the social sciences will want to read.
