George Orwell is sometimes read as disinterested in (if not outright hostile) to philosophy. Yet a fair reading of Orwell's work reveals an author whose work was deeply informed by philosophy and who often revealed his philosophical sympathies. Orwell's written works are of ethical significance, but he also affirmed and defended substantive ethical claims about humanism, well-being, normative ethics, free will and moral responsibility, moral psychology, decency, equality, liberty, justice, and political morality. In George Orwell: The Ethics of Equality, philosopher Peter Brian Barry avoids a narrow reading of Orwell that considers only a few of his best-known works and instead considers the entirety of Orwell's corpus, including his fiction, journalism, essays, book reviews, diaries, and correspondence, contending that there are ethical commitments discernible throughout his work that ground some of his best-known pronouncements and positions. While Orwell is often read as a humanist, egalitarian, and socialist, too little attention has been paid to the nuanced versions of those doctrines that he endorsed and the philosophical sympathies that led him to embrace them. Barry illuminates Orwell's philosophical sympathies and contributions that have either gone unnoticed or been underappreciated. Philosophers interested in Orwell now have a text that explores many of the philosophical themes in his work and Orwell's readers now have a text that makes the case for regarding him as a worthy philosopher as well as one of the greatest Anglophone writers of the 20th century.

This book examines what makes someone an evil person and how evil people are different from merely bad people. Rather than focusing on the "problem of evil" that occupies philosophers of religion, Barry looks instead to moral psychology—the intersection of ethics and psychology. He provides both a philosophical account of what evil people are like and considers the implications of that account for social, legal, and criminal institutions. He also engages in traditional philosophical reasoning strongly informed by psychological research, especially abnormal and social psychology. In response to the popularity of phrases like "the axis of evil" and the ease with which politicians and others describe their opponents as "evil," Barry sets out to make clear just what it is to be an evil person.

What makes someone an evil person? How are evil people different from merely bad people? Do evil people really exist? Can we make sense of evil people if we mythologize them? Do evil people take pleasure in the suffering of others? Can evil people be redeemed?Peter Brian Barry answers these questions by examining a wide range of works from renowned authors, including works of literature by Kazuo Ishiguro, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and Oscar Wilde alongside classic works of philosophy by Nietzsche and Aristotle. By considering great texts from literature and philosophy, Barry examines whether evil is merely a fiction. The Fiction of Evil explores how the study of literature can contribute to the study of metaphysics and ethics and it is essential reading for those studying the concept of evil or philosophy of literature at undergraduate level.

Snooks made two mistakes. The first was to leave the mines of Australia to search for gold in the wrong area of Canada. The second was to travel across the USA during a Civil War when all he wanted to do was get home to England. In a moment of panic he compounded the second by using the name of his old school friend Flashman instead of his own.Rubbing shoulders with the high and the mighty, Snooks manages to wear two uniforms, have two different ranks in two different armies; encounter women with bizarre notions of bedroom etiquette; kill more than one general and lose the greatest battle of the war three different ways. Journey with him as the likes of U.S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Longstreet, Halleck, Sherman and Wild Bill Hickok get in his way more often than not. His final error was to document his adventures and send them to his good friend Flashman, seeking to have them published. His manuscript vanished until being rediscovered at an estate sale in Durban, South Africa in 2006.Now his memoir resurfaces and the reader will wonder....... who was it who really did all these things? Is a vexing mystery explained?

Having survived many harrowing battles, including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, Snooks (probably Charles F. Thursby) is befriended by John Surratt and his mother, Mary. He is only 12 miles from Washington D.C. and the British legation that will finally send him home. But someone in high office has a very different fate in store for Snooks. His story introduces many famous and not so famous figures of the American Civil War. The events described are real - although at times Snooks can be a bit weak on detail. From the stage of Ford's Theatre to Southern prisons, the strong and the mighty seem bound and determined to frustrate his efforts to get home. Perhaps it had something to do with his masquerade as a former school chum, Flashman. Seduction and betrayal are the least of Snooks' problems as he tries unwillingly to complete a mission in which he doesn't believe for a man he thinks is a worse villain than himself. He is a witness to history and to tragic events, for many of which he is partly to blame. Extensively footnoted, volume 2 of Snooks' Civil War adventures along with its companion (Snooks North and South) completes the cycle and answers the questions as to why a chap named Flashman never wrote his own memoir of the War. It's fiction that happens to be very close to the truth.

To escape winter blues, three Canadian ladies holiday in New Zealand. Offsetting the air-fare they stay at a cheap but quaint West Coast hotel and befriend local artists. Socialising at a pub they cross paths with a motorcycle gang. Unsuspecting they become involved in a drug network that has its beginnings on the edge of the Gobi Desert, continues through Hong Kong to the South Pacific islands. This is an international story that links Hong Kong Triads with New Zealand gangs and China's attempts to colonize the South Pacific with economic stealth. The Cook Islands with its maritime zone of two million square kilometres is a prime target. With naval bases in Pago Pago and Guam, America seeks the intervention of New Zealand the Islands' protector. The tribes of Rarotonga play an integral part in the final solution as does a black and white collie dog named Lady.
Pascal's God- Shaped Vacuum

Blaise Pascal wrote the Pens es to his skeptical and restless friends to move them to seek God. The Pens es are widely regarded as one of the most exhilarating and effective defenses of the Christian faith ever written, particularly for today's readers who resemble Pascal's friends. This comprehensive guided tour of Pascal's Pens es, plus biography of Pascal's courageous life, aims to benefit seekers and believers by conveying Pascal's insights into: (1) Why a human being is miserable without God; (2) Why Christianity uniquely offers a winsome and efficacious cure; and (3) Why Christianity, despite modern objections, is plausibly true. The greatest significance of Pascal's Pens es may be their compelling articulation of the unique relevance of Christ's gospel for our time. In T.S. Eliot's words, "But I can think of no Christian writer, not Newman even, more to be commended than Pascal to those who doubt, but who have the mind to conceive, and the sensibility to feel, the disorder, the futility, the meaninglessness, the mystery of life and suffering, and who can only find peace through a satisfaction of the whole being." Pascal's signature Pens e undergirding the themes of this guided tour is number 148: "What else does this craving proclaim but that there was once in man a true state of happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object, in other words by God himself." Through this Pens e and many others Pascal wakes us up to appreciate that we may have a God-shaped vacuum in our heart, as suggested, for example, by our affinity for diversions and indifference as ways to avoid addressing our grimmest problems such as our impending deaths, unhappiness, and unjust self-absorption. The Pens es in particular address how a person this side of the technological revolution can seriously consider Christian truth and life in the face of contemporary countervailing currents including scientism, cynicism, and entertainment culture. Pascal's case for why to seek and believe is especially relevant for today because he wrote to modern secular society, to ambitious pursuers of career success, to the bored and indifferent, to intellectual skeptics. In contrast, classical rational apologetics hardly penetrate this group, because they neglect the readers' psychology, mistakenly pre-supposing they are open to seeking God. By combining style, wit, and reasoned arguments to move both the heart and mind, Pascal's Pens es are known for setting his listeners on fire to take up an interest in seeking. The Pens es will appeal to those who enjoy brilliant writing and wish to gain deeper insight into the human condition. As Professor Henry Phillips put it, "Pascal offers a portrait of the human condition that provokes questions whose answers will be found only in the Christian religion." The Pens es are especially on target for readers who struggle with how a reasonable person living in today's technological era can be a Christian; for these Pascal is indispensible reading and the ultimate mentor. In addition to helping seekers work out their doubts about belief, this guided tour aims to make Pascal's thoughts practically helpful for a Christian to live life congruently with the gospel, and in particular to better weather modern doubts and criticisms. This book was inspired by the excellent guided tour of the Pens es (Christianity for Modern Pagans, 1993) by Professor Peter Kreeft, and from learning that many fellow Christians count the Pens es as one of their all-time most helpful reads. Given the stature of Pascal as a colossal Christian thinker, it is surprising that very few comprehensive guided tours with objective to help modern seekers and believers have been published, and this book helps fill this space. Self-discipline is a life skill that can be readily learned when it is intelligently approached. It is more complicated--and easier--than merely forcing yourself to work harder. The exercise of self-discipline can be made easier by understanding the larger context of a personal achievement process. Considered in this framework, the daily exercise of self-discipline results in successfully achieving goals and experiencing the freedom and happiness created by your accomplishments. When you are comfortably moving toward your life vision, you experience a deep emotional satisfaction that is simply incomparable.

The 2nd edition of this textbook serves as an introductory text for attorneys working with accounting and the business valuation world. It is the textbook used for a law school course of a similar title. The principles of accounting and finance directly extend to contract issues, torts, business and securities matters, taxation issues, partnership disputes, gift and estate matters, to name only a partial list. These areas of jurisprudence are often based significantly on substantive financial questions, and their measurement can be the heart of the entire matter. The application of broad accounting principles to countless business transactions requires an understanding of the objectives of financial reporting and the needs of the users of financial information.Contrary to popular belief, accounting is not a mathematical formula or calculation, but rather an organized system that logically summarizes business transactions into useable information that is meaningful to management, creditors, business investors and other stakeholders. This text takes readers through the system of accounting and the development of financial statements. Complexities and limitations of accounting information are explored, culminating in a study of ratio analysis of financial statements to glean relevant insights. The objective of this introductory study of accounting is to provide a broad, workable knowledge base that will facilitate the use of accounting information as it relates to the practice of law.The finance and valuation chapters present concepts and calculations of simple and compound interest, present value and annuities. In the area of business valuation, the reader is exposed to Revenue Rulings 59-60 and 68-609, two seminal rulings on business valuation issues as well as a complete example and explanation of a small business valuation analysis. This expanded and updated text contains three chapters on damages covering definitions, legal concepts underlying damages analyses and classifications of damages (general, special, economic, non-economic and punitive) with one chapter devoted to personal economic loss calculations and another focuses on commercial damages. There is a new chapter dedicated to determining personal income and, finally, the text concludes with a chapter on opinion evidence and expert testimony with consideration of the legal privileges applicable to experts and techniques for taking effective expert depositions and cross-examining experts at trial. Finance and Accounting for Lawyers, 2nd Edition is drawing praise from professors across the country as the "ideal" text for a course of this nature.
