These are stories from the heart. Most have their genesis in events set in the Deep South with the accents, rhythms, and pathos of the unique Southern experience. Stories are not real until they have a past, which means that we cannot return to our yesteryears in fact but only in the wellspring of memory. But this turns out to be life's real fallback alternative. The only way we can understand our human and personal past and our prospects for the future is by telling our human tales, not by reciting facts and statistics. For more than biological creatures, we believe we are biographical creations, the stuff of our stories, the novelists of ourselves. And always behind and before us, we acknowledge the Creator with gratitude and humbleness and seek to conform our musings to his miracles. These convictions and the colorings they cast over our human condition have guided the authors in crafting these tales, which we offer with our good wishes to the reader.We have obeyed as best we could a compulsion to express in words the ineffable workings of the spirit. In this sense these tales are true, even though they are more than factual and less than final. For we share a conviction that God is the first and final chapters of our life. Our task is to make the best of the interval.

In Foremother Love, Dana Murphy examines the importance of eighteenth-century poet Phillis Wheatley as a foundational figure for Black feminist criticism. Murphy establishes Phillis (as she refers to her) as a writer who wrote in response to and in conversation with other creators as well as a critic who was invested in sharing, explaining, and evaluating her own and others' work and contexts. Indeed, Phillis played a key role in the development of what Murphy calls "foremother love"--the Black feminist depiction of the love of an unrelated feminist ancestor as a legitimate relation for the practice of inheritance, mourning, liberation, and friendship. Drawing on the work of Barbara Christian, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Barbara Smith, and others, Murphy shows that Black feminist criticism becomes a transhistorical theorization when read in conjunction with Phillis's labor and vision. Revealing how Phillis lives on in Black feminist criticism, Murphy contends that foremother love is an ethic of critical care that implores readers to recognize the affective labor of all those working in the field.

For decades the Coffin family had been lucky. They lived in nice homes in many countries with good jobs and three wonderful children. The kids attended private schools, completed college, married and found successful jobs. This all occurred under the auspices of their loving mother Phyllis, who was a mainstay and the familys moral compass. The idyllic life came crashing down just before author Raleigh Coffin and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, as Phyllis was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimers type. In Phyllis, Raleigh tells the story of their personal experience with the scourge of Alzheimers from the perspective of a husband and a principal caregiver who had to confront the disease head on. He shares how the rigors of the disease took a life-changing toll on their family, their time and an incredible dispiriting impact on both their emotional and financial resources.
