Rick Sammon's Digital Imaging Workshops
Rick Sammon's Digital Imaging Workshops picks up where his popular Complete Guide to Digital Photography leaves off. The earlier book gave us brief glimpses of the power of digital imaging. In his new book Sammon has selected twenty of the most common and effective imaging techniques that workshop participants request. Each richly illustrated workshop in the book is accompanied by Sammon's base images on the CD-ROM so that readers can follow step by step along with Sammon using the same image as portrayed in the book. This technique leads readers to develop their own ideas very rapidly. The book opens with a tour of Adobe Photoshop Elements tools and menus. For photographers who are visual learners, the book's CD-ROM also contains short movies that readers can view on their computer showing how to manipulate the most useful tools and menu actions in Elements.

Photo Therapy Motivation and Wisdom: Discovering the Power of Pictures
Unlike Rick Sammon's 39 other best-selling and photo-rich books, Photo Therapy Motivation and Wisdom - Discovering the Power of Pictures, has no photographs between the covers. Yet, Rick feels as though it is his most important work. He trusts this book will make you think - hard - about your photography, and about how using your brain, the best photo "accessory," will help you become a better photographer. Or as stated by famed black-and-white landscape photographer Ansel Adams, "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it." It's not that Rick is tired of having to "lug around a camera," as Lewis Hine said, it's just that he thinks the motivational and inspirational message of this book is better expressed without showing his own pictures. Rather, in reading the 35,000-word text, he'd like you to imagine your own pictures - and potential pictures - while he is describing a situation, process, technique, feeling or emotion.Chapters include: Emotional Intelligence for Photographers, Seeing vs. Looking, Creating Your Own Reality, It's Never Too Late to Be What You Might Have Been, Light and Color Therapy, Learning is Health, and What Does Your Photography Mean to You? The book also includes more than 20 "missions" that you can accept in your quest to expand your photographic horizons. This very personal book is filled with Rick's photo and life wisdom - wisdom he has gained by spending almost an entire lifetime - starting in the late 1950's with developing pictures in his parents' basement - involved in photography in many forms and fashions. You will find many inspirational quotes in this book. One of Rick's favorites: "When you are through changing, you are through." - Bruce Barton

Lectures on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Lectures on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Lectures on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics offers an introduction to several topics in theoretical geophysical fluid dynamics, including the theory of large-scale ocean circulation, geostrophic turbulence, and Hamiltonian fluid dynamics. The book is based on an introductory course in dynamical oceanography offered to first-year graduate students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Each chapter is a self-contained introduction ti its particular subject, and makes few specific references to other chapters. Chapters 1 examines the relationship between the molecular and continuum models of the fluid, and between the Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions of the latter. Ch.2 is a broad introduction to the fluid dynamics of rotating, stratified flows. Ch.3 adddresses large-scale ocean circulation. Chs.4,5 and 6 discuss the theory of turbulence, including elementary ideas based on vorticity laws (Ch.4), statistical turbulence theory (Ch.5), and the applications of these ideas to quasigeostrophic flows in the Earth's oceans and atmosphere (Ch.6). Ch.7 surveys Hamiltonoian fluid dynamics, including the interaction between waves and currents, and "balanced" approximations to nearly geostrophic flow. Overall, the emphasis is on physical ideas rather than mathematical techniques. Readers are assumed to have had an elementary introduction to fluid mechanics, to know advanced calculus through partial differential equations, and to be familiar with the elementary ideas about linear waves, including the concept of group velocity.
