Childbirth and Authoritative Knowledge

Childbirth and Authoritative Knowledge

This benchmark collection of cross-cultural essays on reproduction and childbirth extends and enriches the work of Brigitte Jordan, who helped generate and define the field of the anthropology of birth. The authors' focus on authoritative knowledge--the knowledge that counts, on the basis of which decisions are made and actions taken--highlights the vast differences between birthing systems that give authority of knowing to women and their communities and those that invest it in experts and machines. Childbirth and Authoritative Knowledge offers first-hand ethnographic research conducted by anthropologists in sixteen different societies and cultures and includes the interdisciplinary perspectives of a social psychologist, a sociologist, an epidemiologist, a staff member of the World Health Organization, and a community midwife. Exciting directions for further research as well as pressing needs for policy guidance emerge from these illuminating explorations of authoritative knowledge about birth. This book is certain to follow Jordan's Birth in Four Cultures as the definitive volume in a rapidly expanding field.
Imagery, Ritual, and Birth

Imagery, Ritual, and Birth

Every human being is born and has gone through a process of birth. Yet the topic of birth remains deeply underrepresented in the humanities, overshadowed by a scholarly focus on death. This book explores how imagery is used ritualistically in religious, secular, and nonreligious ways during birth, through analysis of a wide variety of art, iconography, poetry, and material culture. Objects central to the book’s study include religious figurines, paintings about birth, and other items representative of pregnancy, crowning, or giving birth that have an historical or original meaning connected to religion. Contemporary artists are also creating new art in which they represent birth and mothering as nonreligious events that are sacred or divine. Framed through the concept of social ontology, which examines the nature of the social world and studies how people create meaning out of the various objects, images, and processes that make up human social life, the book theorizes a social ontology of birth, focusing on how the meaning of imagery undergoes metamorphosis between the spheres of religion, secularity, nonreligion, and the sacred when used during birth as a rite of passage. Included in the study are more than thirty images of birth, some of which have never been written about before.

Bastrop, Texas: a picturesque community of modest size located at the edge of the Lost Pines Forest in Central Texas. Yet, from its vantage point on the banks of the Colorado River, this town boasts 131 sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying the community for its label: “Most Historic Small Town in Texas.”In Historic Homes of Bastrop, Texas, local historians and researchers Robbie Moore Sanders and Sandra Chipley have collected the stories behind nearly a hundred of the city’s most historic dwellings, most built between 1835 and 1950. Copiously illustrated and engaging, the book begins with a quick historical overview of the community that incorporates period photographs, historic floorplans and maps, and engaging stories about the people who built and lived in the homes. In addition, the authors have provided beautiful, full-color photographs of the buildings as they exist today. From the simple dwelling of a community activist to the ornate Victorian mansions of the wealthy, Sanders and Chipley trace the narrative of this culturally rich community through the remarkably varied lives of its people and the houses they built. Readers with an interest in local history and culture and historic preservation as well as visitors to this popular tourist locale—recognized as a “Distinctive Destination” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation—will thoroughly enjoy Historic Homes of Bastrop, Texas.

California is home to over sixteen hundred species of undomesticated bees—most of them native—that populate and pollinate our gardens, fields, and urban green spaces. In this absorbing guidebook, some of the state's preeminent bee and botany experts introduce us to this diverse population. California Bees and Blooms holds a magnifying glass up to the twenty-two most common genera (and six species of cuckoo bees), describing each one's distinctive behaviors, social structures, flight season, preferred flowers, and enemies. Enhancing these descriptions are photographs of bees so finely detailed they capture pollen scattered across gauzy wings and iridescent exoskeletons. Drawing from years of research at the UC Berkeley Urban Bee Lab, California Bees and Blooms presents an authoritative look at these creatures, emphasizing their vital relationship with flowers. In addition to opening our eyes to the beautiful array of wild bees in our midst, this book provides information on fifty-three bee-friendly plants and how to grow them. Just a few square feet of poppies, sage, and phacelia are enough to sustain a healthy population of wild bees, transforming an urban or suburban garden into a world that hums and buzzes with life.
