Set during the background of the recent civil war in Sri Lanka, this somewhat sad and ultimately realistic story traces the lives of two individuals from vastly different backgrounds. Nadesan is a trained mechanic working in the north-east of the country in his father's garage. Traumatized by the loss of his young family at the hands of the military and obsessed by the need to avenge their death, he has to find a way to hurt the people who took away everything he loved. Driven to the depths of despair he doesn't care if he has to die in the process. Amanthi works as a burns unit doctor in the capital Colombo, treating women driven by the cycle of domestic violence and cultural tradition to despair and self-immolation. She has to call on all her skills and experience treating burn victims when a car bomb explodes outside the crowded central bus terminal in the market suburb of Pettah killing and injuring hundreds of people. Even amid the most unimaginable horrors of war, each will find a clear purpose; one to maim and destroy and the other to save lives and rebuild.

A bitter, angry mechanic sits in an old Ford Escort parked in the central bus terminal during evening rush hour, knowing he's about to die in the next few minutes. Devastated by what's happened to his young family in his home town, Nadesan doesn't want anyone living in the capital city to ever feel safe again. A local traffic policeman angrily raps on the car window, gesturing at him to move the vehicle. What happens next finds him running for his life across the city pursued by a para-military hit-squad headed by a dangerous ex-soldier. Ordered to find and kill the men responsible for setting off car bombs across the country, Tilak's military training makes him very good at doing his job, yet he grapples with hate that he loves it so much. In the nearby general hospital, a compassionate and dedicated doctor struggles to deal with the pain and suffering caused by these terrible explosions. Could she be the one to bridge the gap between these two men ... but will it be enough for them to change their ways? Three very different people, their stories winding around each other like strands of barbed wire through the tragedy of a vicious civil war, by the choices they make in their life.

Thoroughly grounded in Mexican history and based on extensive field research, this introduction examines the roots of Mexico's contemporary political culture and its democratic transformation. Now in its seventh edition, Politics in Mexico: The Path of a New Democracy has been revised and updated in order to address several major changes that have occurred since 2013, including the broad effort of Mexico to achieve a functional democracy; Pe a Nieto's continued reliance on the armed forces to combat organized crime; an analysis of the 2018 presidential election and what L pez Obrador's victory means for Mexico; and the country's slow economic growth and the importance of emphasizing poverty as a central policy issue. Authors Roderic Ai Camp and Shannan L. Mattiace provide an analysis of numerous aspects of Mexican political and economic development, highlighting controversial issues related to electoral democracy, drug-related violence, poverty, human rights, and the country's economic and political relationship with the U.S. Engagingly written by top scholars in the field, Politics in Mexico, Seventh Edition, is essential reading for students of Mexican or Latin American politics, comparative politics, and Mexican history.

Today all would agree that Mexico and the United States have never been closer--that the fates of the two republics are inextricably intertwined. It has become an intimate part of life in almost every community in the United States, through immigration, imported produce, business ties, or illegal drugs. It is less a neighbor than a sibling; no matter what our differences, it is intricately a part of our existence. In the fully updated second edition of Mexico: What Everyone Needs to Know®, Roderic Ai Camp gives readers the most essential information about our sister republic to the south. Camp organizes chapters around major themes--security and violence, economic development, foreign relations, the colonial heritage, and more. He asks questions that take us beyond the headlines: Why does Mexico have so much drug violence? What was the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement? How democratic is Mexico? Who were Benito Juárez and Pancho Villa? What is the PRI (the Institutional Revolutionary Party)? The answers are sometimes surprising. Despite ratification of NAFTA, for example, Mexico has fallen behind Brazil and Chile in economic growth and rates of poverty. Camp explains that lack of labor flexibility, along with low levels of transparency and high levels of corruption, make Mexico less competitive than some other Latin American countries. The drug trade, of course, enhances corruption and feeds on poverty; approximately 450,000 Mexicans now work in this sector. Brisk, clear, and informed, Mexico: What Everyone Needs To Know® offers a valuable primer for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of our neighbor to the South.
