Outbreak: Cases in Real-World Microbiology, 2nd Edition, is the newest edition of this fascinating textbook designed for introductory microbiology students and instructors. Thoroughly revised, this collection of case studies of real-world disease outbreaks, generously illustrated in full color, offers material that directly impacts college-level students, while the book's unique presentation offers instructors the flexibility to use it effectively in a number of ways. More than 90 outbreak case studies, organized into six sections according to the human body system affected, illustrate the wide range of diseases caused by microbial pathogens. The studies are presented at differing levels of difficulty and can be taught at all undergraduate levels. Each case study includes questions for students to think about, discuss, and answer, and the book includes an appendix that directs students to the specific reference material on which each case was based, providing the opportunity to investigate further and to apply the reference content to the case being studied. Each of the six sections of the book concludes with a College Perspective and a Global Perspective case study. The College Perspective provides a direct and practical link between the microbiology course and the daily lives of students. The Global Perspective connects students with outbreaks that have occurred in countries around the world to facilitate understanding of the social, religious, economic, and political values at play in the treatment and prevention of infectious disease. At the end of every section, detailed descriptions offer concise yet complete information on each disease involved in that section.

This first edition text developed and evolved to meet three pedagogical goals we deemed essential for those studying allied health and are pre-professional. The use of microbiology case studies were modified to maintain their value as tools that result in critical thinking and knowledge retention while providing a more realistic context for preparing future health care professionals. Consequently, the text has real life, personally-oriented microbiology cases appropriate for those in nursing, pharmacy, and other allied health disciplines (pre-med, pre-PA, CLS, etc.). This format presents material as a story about the patient as well as information regarding their family circumstances, personal characteristics, and individual motivations.
Supplying the Nuclear Arsenal

Supplying the Nuclear Arsenal

Rodney P. Carlisle

Johns Hopkins University Press
2020
pokkari
Originally published in 1996. Although the history of commercial-power nuclear reactors is well known, the story of the government reactors that produce weapons-grade plutonium and tritium has been shrouded in secrecy. Supplying the Nuclear Arsenal looks at the origin and development of these production reactors, Rodney Carlisle and Joan Zenzen describe a fifty-year government effort no less complex, expensive, and technologically demanding than the Polaris or Apollo programs—yet one about which most Americans know virtually nothing. Carlisle and Zenzen describe the evolution of the early reactors, the atomic weapons establishment that surrounded them, and the sometimes bitter struggles between business and political constituencies for their share of "nuclear pork." They show how, since the 1980s, aging production reactors have increased the risk of radioactive contamination of the atmosphere and water table. And they describe how the Department of Energy mounted a massive effort to find the right design for a new generation of reactors, only to abandon that effort with the end of the Cold War. Today, all American production reactors remain closed.Due to short half-life, the nation's supply of tritium, crucial to modern weapons, is rapidly dwindling. As countries like Iraq and North Korea threaten to join the nuclear club, the authors contend, the United States needs to revitalize tritium production capacity in order to maintain a viable nuclear deterrent. Meanwhile, as slowly decaying artifacts of the Cold War, the closed production reactors at Hanford, Washington, and Savannah River, South Carolina, loom ominously over the landscape.

Powder and Propellants is the story of the U.S. Navy's premier facility for research, development, testing, and evaluation of ""energetic materials,"" the chemical compounds used in gun and rocket propellants as well as in aircraft cockpit ejection seats. Initially charged to improve the penetrating power of warheads against steel armor, Indian Head became the proving grounds for testing guns, propellant powder, shells, mounts, and armor, notably the manufacture and testing of Jet Assist Takeoff (JATO), Zuni, Talos, and Polaris rockets and missiles. First published in 1990 as a private publication for the navy, Powder and Propellants is now available again as a revised and expanded second edition, with a new chapter on the institution's last decade. Those interested in military history, technology, and government institutional history will find this book invaluable.

Rough Waters traces the evolution of the role of the U.S. merchant ship flag, and the U.S. merchant fleet itself. Rodney Carlisle looks at conduct andcommerce at sea from the earliest days of the country, when battles at seawere fought over honor and the flag, to the current American-owned merchantfleet sailing under flags of convenience via foreign registries. Carlisleexamines the world-wide use, legality, and continued acceptance of thispractice, as well as measures to off-set its ill effects.Looking at the interwar period of 1919–1939, Carlisle examines how thepractice of foreign registry of American-owned vessels began on a large scale, led by Standard Oil with tankers under the flag of the Free City of Danzig andfollowed by Panama. The work spells out how the United States helped furtherthe practice of registry in Panama and Liberia after World War II. Rough Watersconcludes with a look at how the practice of foreign registry shapespresent-day commerce and labor relations.

R.I.P. The Theory Of Evolution

R.I.P. The Theory Of Evolution

Ark House Press

pokkari
The theory of evolution has been around for over two and a half centuries now, and yet, the theory has still not found any significant scientific support. The current science is actually moving us further away from long-term evolution, and more towards a younger earth, and the Biblical narrative.Advances in space exploration, such as the James Webb telescope, are finding galaxies at the outer edges of the known universe, where there shouldn't be galaxies - spiral galaxies that should have wound up millions of years ago if the universe was actually that old - and uniform heat signatures across the known universe, which would not be possible if the universe started with a massive hot explosive force around 13.8 billion years ago.In addition, genetic research and tracing have also thrown up significant issues for a supposed long age of humanity on planet earth. There are also many other concerns that an evolutionary view of our past cannot answer.R.I.P. The Theory Of Evolution explores a range of topics that will demonstrate just how scientifically unsupported the theory of evolution actually is. Starting with the Big Bang Theory and working forward, this book will consider what we do know, and what this implies for our history.Take the time to research this topic yourself. You will be amazed to see how current scientific data is throwing new light on our "recent" past.

History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis and the Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood
Tampa's Davis Islands has long been among the most desirable places to live on Florida's west coast. Created by David P. Davis during the 1920s Florida land boom, the project made him wildly rich and nationally famous. He followed up Davis Islands with a subdivision twice its size in St. Augustine, which he named Davis Shores. Davis sold his Tampa development in August 1926 but slipped into debt and died under mysterious circumstances while en route to Europe aboard a luxury liner in the early hours of October 13, 1926. Though he did not live to see it, work on Davis Islands continued, and the development ultimately became a huge success. Join author Rodney Kite-Powell as he examines the history of one of Florida's most famous neighborhoods.
Pay Dirt

Pay Dirt

James P. Quirk; Rodney D. Fort

Princeton University Press
1997
pokkari
Why would a Japanese millionaire want to buy the Seattle Mariners baseball team, when he has admitted that he has never played in or even seen a baseball game? Cash is the answer: major league baseball, like professional football, basketball, and hockey, is now big business with the potential to bring millions of dollars in profits to owners. Not very long ago, however, buying a sports franchise was a hazardous investment risked only by die-hard fans wealthy enough to lose parts of fortunes made in other businesses. What forces have changed team ownership from sports-fan folly to big-business savvy? Why has The Wall Street Journal become popular reading in pro sports locker rooms? And why are sports pages now dominated by economic clashes between owners and players, cities with franchises and cities without them, leagues and players' unions, and team lawyers and players' lawyers? In answering these questions, James Quirk and Rodney Fort have written the most complete book on the business and economics of professional sports, past and present. Pay Dirt offers a wealth of information and analysis on the reserve clause, salary determination, competitive balance in sports leagues, the market for franchises, tax sheltering, arenas and stadiums, and rival leagues. The authors present an abundance of historical material, much of it new, including team ownership histories and data on attendance, TV revenue, stadium and arena contracts, and revenues and costs. League histories, team statistics, stories about players and owners, and sports lore of all kinds embellish the work. Quirk and Fort are writing for anyone interested in sports in the 1990s: players, players' agents, general managers, sportswriters, and, most of all, sports fans.
