This story shows children how to improve their perspectives after scary or disappointing events. It explores several ways for children to reduce their negative attitudes. It is intended for ages 6 to 12. It helps children help themselves in easy and practical ways. The book includes room for readers and/or listeners' personal responses. It is based on actual events beginning when my grandchildren were 3 and 5 years of age. My son created a word game he played with them to assist in framing their viewpoints about life's experiences. They use these tools to this day.
Building Research Culture and Infrastructure

Building Research Culture and Infrastructure

Social work education programs, at all levels, are challenged to enhance their research culture and infrastructure. Since the 1991 NIMH-supported Task Force on Social Work Research report called for increasing research development in social work education programs, schools of social work have worked to develop research-supportive climates. This has helped social work scholars contribute to the knowledge base through the publication of original research, the expansion of the quantity and quality of faculty and student research endeavors, and the development of more empirically validated treatment approaches. Drawing on the extensive experience of the authors, this book provides a roadmap to building research capacity. It outlines specific leadership strategies that deans and directors can use to access federal research funds; incentivize interdisciplinary research; enhance mentorship relationships between senior and junior researchers; and make strategic hires. The book also identifies specific strategies to promote research by junior faculty and graduate students; forge partnerships between the university and local community and state agencies; identify potential grant funders; and write successful grants. Deans, directors, faculty, research administrators, and doctoral students will find this book a valuable step-by-step guide for fostering a research climate and increasing the likelihood of developing successful research initiatives.

With the new federal mandate to double, by the year 2002, the number of children in foster care who are to be adopted or placed in permanent legal guardianships, it is essential for adoption agency staff and prospective families to learn which factors contribute to successful and unsuccessful placements. Dr. Ruth McRoy's informative guide, Special Needs Adoptions: Practice Issues outlines what formulates a successful match between adoptable children with special needs and their prospective parents, and how the current placements can be improved. Dr. McRoy recognizes the challenges of building families through adoptions and offers specific training suggestions for special needs adoptive families and agency workers in order to improve adoption outcomes for children. The book is based on a research project designed to identify special needs adoptions practice issues that contributed to intact, disruptive and dissolved adoptions by collecting data from adoption supervisors, post-adoption service providers, and actual case records of adoption placements. Based on the findings, the characteristics of children needing adoptive placement are described, practice issues such as matching children and parents are addressed, and transition planning is discussed. Further, controversial placement issues including foster parent adoptions, single parent adoptions, sibling placement and transracial adoptions are dealt with. Special Needs Adoptions is a rich, resourceful guide for all of the parties involved in a special need adoption: state and private adoption agency staff, post-adoption service providers, child welfare policy makers and researchers. Special Needs Adoptions is also a wonderful resource for adoptive parents or prospective parents considering special needs adoptions.

Antioxidants in Higher Plants provides a unique blend of molecular and biochemical approaches to cover the state of the art in antioxidant function. The chemistry and protective potential of sulfhydryl and hydroxyl compounds are emphasized. Interesting perspectives are presented regarding the response of antioxidant metabolism to interactions among environmental pollutants, illumination, temperature, and water availability. The book also discusses how tools of molecular biology may further clarify antioxidant function and response to stress. Antioxidants in Higher Plants will be an excellent reference for plant physiologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, ecologists, and students.
