A strikingly original exploration of the profound impact of World War II on how we understand the art that survived it By the end of World War II an estimated one million artworks and 2.5 million books had been seized from their owners by Nazi forces; many were destroyed. The artworks and cultural artifacts that survived have traumatic, layered histories. This book traces the biographies of these objects—including paintings, sculpture, and Judaica—their rescue in the aftermath of the war, and their afterlives in museums and private collections and in our cultural understanding. In examining how this history affects the way we view these works, scholars discuss the moral and aesthetic implications of maintaining the association between the works and their place within the brutality of the Holocaust—or, conversely, the implications of ignoring this history. Afterlives offers a thought-provoking investigation of the unique ability of art and artifacts to bear witness to historical events. With rarely seen archival photographs and with contributions by the contemporary artists Maria Eichhorn, Hadar Gad, Dor Guez, and Lisa Oppenheim, this catalogue illuminates the study of a difficult and still-urgent subject, with many parallels to today’s crises of art in war. Washington State is a place of political mavericks. Split tickets are a source of pride and independent voters outnumber Democrats and Republicans. Washington was first to have a voter-approved state Equal Rights Amendment, first to elect a woman as governor, and first to elect a Chinese-American to the position. Today, Washington's open primary election system and voter registration process demonstrate it has not drifted far from its populist roots.Governing the Evergreen State provides an absorbing look at an ever-evolving state political and judicial system and presents intriguing case studies. With chapters on interest groups, the constitution, the environment, media coverage, the court system, the legislature, political parties, changing demographics, and more, this volume updates the popular Governing Washington. Fresh discussions and analysis written by academics from universities across the state, a senator, a pollster, a newspaper reporter/blogger, a former chief justice of the state Supreme Court, and a court administrator offer a springboard for further examination and discussion.

The 1994 discovery of Shor's quantum algorithm for integer factorization—an important practical problem in the area of cryptography—demonstrated quantum computing's potential for real-world impact. Since then, researchers have worked intensively to expand the list of practical problems that quantum algorithms can solve effectively. This book surveys the fruits of this effort, covering proposed quantum algorithms for concrete problems in many application areas, including quantum chemistry, optimization, finance, and machine learning. For each quantum algorithm considered, the book clearly states the problem being solved and the full computational complexity of the procedure, making sure to account for the contribution from all the underlying primitive ingredients. Separately, the book provides a detailed, independent summary of the most common algorithmic primitives. It has a modular, encyclopedic format to facilitate navigation of the material and to provide a quick reference for designers of quantum algorithms and quantum computing researchers.

This book gives an overview of the existing self-healing nanotextured vascular approaches. Itdescribes the healing agents used in engineering self-healing materials as well as thefundamental physicochemical phenomena accompanying self-healing. This book also addressesthe different fabrication methods used to form core–shell nanofiber mats. The fundamentaltheoretical aspects of fracture mechanics are outlined. A brief theoretical description of cracksin brittle elastic materials is given and the Griffith approach is introduced. The fracturetoughness is described, including viscoelastic effects. Critical (catastrophic) and subcritical(fatigue) cracks and their growth are also described theoretically. The adhesion and cohesionenergies are introduced as well, and the theory of the blister test for the two limiting cases ofstiff and soft materials is developed. In addition, the effect of non-self-healing nanofiber matson the toughening of ply surfaces in composites is discussed. The book also presents a briefdescription of the electrochemical theory of corrosion crack growth. All the above-mentionedphenomena are relevant in the context of self-healing materials.

Partial differential equations are a central concept in mathematics. They are used in mathematical models of a huge range of real-world phenomena, from electromagnetism to financial markets. This new edition of the well-known text by Ockendon et al., providing an enthusiastic and clear guide to the theory and applications of PDEs, provides timely updates on: transform methods (especially multidimensional Fourier transforms and the Radon transform); explicit representations of general solutions of the wave equation; bifurcations; the Wiener-Hopf method; free surface flows; American options; the Monge-Ampere equation; linear elasticity and complex characteristics; as well as numerous topical exercises. This book is ideal for students of mathematics, engineering and physics seeking a comprehensive text in the modern applications of PDEs

Deliberate practice exercises provide trainees and students an opportunity to build competence in essential emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT) skills while developing their own personal therapeutic style. These exercises present role-playing scenarios in which two trainees act as a client and a clinician, switching back and forth under the guidance of a supervisor. The clinician improvises appropriate and authentic responses to client statements organized into three difficulty levels-beginner, intermediate, and advanced-that reflect common client questions and concerns. Each of the first 2 exercises focuses on a single skill, such as offering evocative inquiries and reflections, deepening the client amp rsquo s emotional experience of self and other, and choreographing interactions that promote positive emotional engagement. Two comprehensive exercises follow in which trainees integrate these essential skills into a single session. Step-by-step instructions guide participants through the exercises, identify criteria for mastering each skill, and explain how to monitor and adjust difficulty. Guidelines to help trainers and trainees get the most out of training are also provided.

From the moment we wake up to the moment we end our day, we use interfaces built out of the written word. Textual information remains now, as it has for centuries, the cornerstone of human information acquisition. The wide adoption of smartphone, tablets, e-readers and personal computers has shifted the bulk of this reading from inflexible paper to digital content. The control provided by digital displays over how visual information is presented to readers has the potential to improve reading for each and every reader, regardless of ability or diagnosis. This represents a profound shift in how we think about reading because text is no longer rendered immutable by writers, designers, or publishers at a single stage, and human-computer interaction research is key to realizing its potential. Readability research takes a fundamentally individual approach to what each reader needs. Each reader has their own individual needs. Meanwhile, adapting the written word to the individual reader has never been easier, and the goal of maximizing individual reading efficacy is increasingly attainable. No one discipline or field has all the tools or answers, and readability work is inherently interdisciplinary. The authors of this monograph include vision scientists, technology experts, educators, designers, typographers, and data scientists. Together they represent voices from academia, the tech industry, and non-profit institutions, driven by common goals to improve the reading interfaces of today. In this review, they provide a comprehensive introduction to interdisciplinary methodologies, tools, and materials required for readability research focused on the individual reader. They call on the HCI community to contribute to the growing understanding of readers’ needs; to study the interactions between text, user, and task; and to build the tools and interfaces needed to improve reading outcomes for all.
