This richly illustrated, Gilded Age inspired sketchbook reveals a fascinating side of a titan of American architecture alongside pages for a reader's own expressions of beauty.Considered the preeminent nineteenth century American architect, Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895) designed some of the greatest landmarks of the Gilded Age such as the Vanderbilt mansions, including Biltmore, the Breakers, Marble House and more. Part of the unique milieu of Hunt's inspiration was his devotion to the art of collecting. From fine art and jewelry to antiques and collectables, Hunt scoured Europe and America for objects of interest. He kept extensive sketchbooks of his drawings and notes that reveal not only his collecting mindset, but the ideas, aesthetics and inspirations that shaped his approach to architecture. Author Sam Watters presents a glimpse inside the creative mind of Richard Morris Hunt, and explores a historic and elegant world of beauty. Including pages for sketches and notes inspired by Hunt's designs.
Celebrated internationally in the nineteenth century as America's premier architect, Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895) is best known for his opulent Gilded Age Vanderbilt mansions, including Biltmore, the Breakers, Marble House, and other landmark works. Yet Hunt's impact on American culture after the Civil War ranges far beyond his lavish palaces. In The Gilded Life of Richard Morris Hunt, historian Sam Watters reveals Hunt's remarkable influence in creating the institutions and their conventions that transformed Old World traditions into his generation's idea of an American civilization, through architecture, interior design, sculpture, painting, and the ardent advocacy of artisan trades. Watters repositions Hunt and his forty-year career in light of new discoveries and connections made through his meticulous study of the Richard Morris Hunt Collection at the Library of Congress. Featuring 200 illustrations, including Hunt's drawings, images he collected, portraits of his privileged New York and Newport inner circle, and new photographs and plans, this dynamic biography follows the contours of American thought that shaped Hunt's life and work among the ruling one percent.

Every morning for the thirteen years he was on Law & Order, Jerry Orbach wrote his wife a short love poem and placed it next to her coffee cup before he left for work. Over the years Jerry wrote hundreds of notes -- all of which Elaine cherished and preserved. Now dozens of Jerry's most meaningful poems to Elaine, along with stories from his amazing career and their enduring romance, tell the tale of their life together. With essays from some of Jerry's dearest friends and a foreword by Sam Waterston, Elaine created a collection of funny and moving poetry and a tribute to a wonderful marriage and a dearly loved man. The world remembers Jerry as a legendary Broadway actor, Baby's father in Dirty Dancing, and of course the wisecracking detective Lenny Briscoe on Law & Order. But to his widow, Elaine, Jerry was a poet...and the love of her life.

Picasso, Miro, O'Keeffe, Pollock, and Warhol created art that defined cubism, surrealism, American modernism, abstract expressionism, and pop. The crosscurrents and intersections that give modernism its complexity and energy are further revealed in works by artists as diverse as Neel, Bearden, Lichtenstein, Stella, Hockney, and Diebenkorn. Why and how 20th-century artists broke the rules and transformed the look of art is the subject of Virginia Mecklenburg's introductory essay. Each work is then superbly illustrated and discussed through such themes as portraiture, nature, metaphor, and social engagement. All of the paintings and sculptures are clearly positioned within the context of the artist's career. Between 1943 and 1945 nearly fifty thousand German prisoners of war, mostly from the German Afrika Korps, lived and worked at seventy POW camps across Texas. Camp Hearne, located on the outskirts of rural Hearne, Texas, was one of the first and largest German prisoner-of-war camps in the United States. Waters and his research team tell the story of the five thousand German soldiers held there during World War II. The book reveals the shadow world of Nazism that existed in the camp, adding darkness to a story that is otherwise optimistic and in places even humorous.
