Explaining Contemporary Asian Military Modernization
This book proposes a novel theoretical framework of "interactive arming" in order to explain armament dynamics in contemporary Asia.Frequently, the modernisation of contemporary naval forces in Asia is described as an "arms race," with the underlying assumption being that weapons acquisitions and increases in defence expenditure are competitive and bilateral and due to conflicting purposes or mutual fears. This book argues that the concept of an arms race is an unsuitable one for explaining contemporary military modernisation in 21st-century Asia. Instead, it proposes a novel and innovative concept of "interactive arming" and argues that what drives conflict is political rivalry, not weapons acquisitions. Instead of perceiving arming as abnormal behaviour, the book views arming as a natural strategic behaviour of states and military modernisation as a basic requirement for a state’s ability to survive. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian security, strategic studies and international relations in general.

Secrets about love, life, and Hollywood from the Tony Award-winning actress from the Broadway production of Dreamgirls in celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the original Broadway show. You may think that Sheryl Lee Ralph earned a legion of devoted fans and the title of Ultimate Diva by being a star of Broadway, film, and television, but Sheryl Lee believes a Diva is something far more special. - A Diva loves the woman she sees in the mirror. - A Diva owns her talent and her strength. - A Diva knows the first step on the road to fame is respecting herself. SHERYL LEE RALPH'S superstar performance as the original Deena in Broadway's groundbreaking musical Dreamgirls didn't happen overnight. First came a grueling Hollywood apprenticeship, where roles for young black women at the time were often offensive and demeaning. Sheryl Lee, however, held stubbornly to the values of her mother and grandmother: she wouldn't take any part she couldn't be proud of. Even after joining Dreamgirls--where she helped create a role that grew from her own life story--she would invest years of sweat and tears before the play finally opened to instant acclaim. In these highly personal reflections, Sheryl Lee Ralph reveals her take on her supposed feuds with Diana Ross and Jennifer Holliday, on auditioning for Sidney Poitier, on why she exited so controversially from the TV series Moesha, and how she signed away her rights to Dreamgirls for a dollar. She uses her life story to illustrate her vision: black, white, or any other color of the rainbow, a true Diva is a person of strength, character, and a beauty that radiates from within. Not just a memoir, Redefining Diva will inspire every woman (and man) who reads it to examine the potential in their own life.

Too Tuckered to Trick or Treat
Carson City cousins Beth Fox and Jo Shannon had been causing trouble from an early age. Now, in their declining years, their friends hoped they would begin to mellow out. No such luck. They had been like sisters since they were kids. Their younger brothers had long since moved away from the small Nevada town but the girls felt it was their duty to run family affairs, keeping everyone connected. One such responsibility was the family cabin in Lake Tahoe, twenty minutes west of Carson City. When the cousins went to the cabin in the fall to clean it, remove trash, and secure it for winter, they had no idea they would encounter a dead body. When the local police began to look suspiciously at the cousins' family, the loyalty gene kicked in. Not about to have the family's good name dragged through the mud, the ladies began their own investigation. After all, who on the police force was as smart, creative, and cunning as Beth and Joe? One comical adventure leads to another in this lighthearted romp through the trials and tribulations of two zany ladies chasing and being chased by bad guys.

In 1990, the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, opened with a murder mystery when a beautiful homecoming queen, wrapped in plastic, washed up on a cold and rocky beach. Laura Palmer’s character began as a plot device that triggered a small town to face its fractured self. But after three seasons and a film, Laura Palmer is no longer just a plot device. Instead of solely focusing on the murderer, like most traditional storytelling at the time, the audience gets to know the victim, a complex young woman who explores her sexuality and endures incredible abuse. Laura’s Ghost: Women Speak About Twin Peaks is an examination of Laura Palmer’s legacy on the 30th anniversary of Twin Peaks. Palmer’s character was one of the few frank and horrific representations of sexual abuse victims which did not diminish the strength and complexity of the victim. Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer, discusses the challenges of the role and how it has impacted herself as well as women she has met over the years, many of whom are survivors of sexual abuse. The role demanded Lee give all of her vulnerability as an actor to this role. This role is one she cannot escape, one with which she will forever be identified. It’s a role that still haunts her today. For many women, this character represents them. Here was a woman who was not just a victim, but who was owning her sexuality as well—a woman coming into her own and discovering her sources of power. This book is a reckoning in which women from the show and community speak about grief, mischief, humor, sexuality, strength, weakness, wickedness, and survival.
