Is Jazz Dead? examines the state of jazz in America at the turn of the twenty-first century. Musicians themselves are returning to New Orleans, Swing, and Bebop styles, while the work of the '60s avant-garde and even '70s and '80s jazz-rock is roundly ignored. Meanwhile, global jazz musicians are creating new and exciting music that is just starting to be heard in the United States, offering a viable alternative to the rampant conservatism here. Stuart Nicholson's thought-provoking book offers an analysis of the American scene, how it came to be so stagnant, and what it can do to create a new level of creativity. This book is bound to be controversial among jazz purists and musicians; it will undoubtedly generate discussion about how jazz should grow now that it has become a recognized part of American musical history. IsJazz Dead? dares to ask the question on all jazz fan's minds: Can jazz survive as a living medium? And, if so, how?
This definitive guide includes a unique chapter-by-chapter playlist for the reader. Jazz: A Beginner’s Guide is a lively and highly accessible introduction to a global musical phenomenon. Award-winning music journalist and author Stuart Nicholson takes the reader on an entertaining journey from jazz's early stirrings in America’s south through to the present day, when almost every country in the world has its own vibrant jazz scene. En route we meet a host of jazz heroes past and present, from Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Miles Davis, to Keith Jarrett and Kamasi Washington. Each chapter is accompanied by a playlist designed to provide a stimulating and enjoyable entry point to what has been described as the most exciting art form of all.
Stuart Nicholson's biography of Ella Fitzgerald is considered a classic in jazz literature. Drawing on original documents, interviews, and new information, Nicholson draws a complete picture of Fitzgerald's professional and personal life. Fitzgerald rose from being a pop singer with chart-novelty hits in the late '30s to become a bandleader and then one of the greatest interpreters of American popular song. Along with Billie Holiday, she virtually defined the female voice in jazz, and countless others followed in her wake and acknowledged her enormous influence. Also includes two 8-page inserts.

How to Start and Enjoy Living the RV Life on a Tight Budget A Budget-Friendly RV Lifestyle Startup GuideEveryone's financial situation is different. Whatever may fit your budget may not fit mine and vice versa, keeping that in mind I wrote this book for those who want to enjoy the freedom of the open road but on a reasonable budget. If you are like me and live off of a limited monthly income; then you may enjoy what you find in this book. Even though I didn't discuss how to find free foods or soup kitchens in different cities, I did discuss how to find a lot of everyday needs while RVing for cheap and sometimes free.Buying an RV itself is a significant investment, but if you shop smartly, you may find a good used one around your city for a reasonable price. Also, remember you can find RV financing that is more like a home financing than a vehicle financing. So the payments are always very reasonable. We started our RV life in 2012, as I took an early forced retirement due to downsizing. As an accountant, I kept crunching numbers to figure out how we would survive in the long run with the house note and all other expenses that we had. The one day a friend told me about RV life. I was not interested at first, didn't think much of that idea. But then I started reading about it, and the more I read more appealing it became.Again as a number guy, I crunched the numbers and found out we could actually do this and save money. Yes, you heard me right. It would cost us less to live and travel around in an RV than to live in our 20-year-old house. I shared my calculation in this book; you can take a look and compare your own numbers and see how your numbers would look. This book is a compilation of all the things a person should consider when choosing to go with the RV lifestyle. But the important part of this life is saving money, as I said, by going with RV life, we are now saving money and you can too, as long as you do it the right way. I share my ideas, experience, and thoughts about how to start an RV life, safely, while enjoying the beautiful outdoors and finally be able to live the life we always dreamed of.Before hit the "buy" button take a look and see if these topics interest you enough. This Is What I Discussed In This Book. The one thing about the future that is certain is that it is going to be different than our current reality. The people who are creating the future have a different kind of mindset. They look at the future as an opportunity for growth and transformation. The future they see is not a set of predictions and forecasts, but a vast ocean of possibility. They know that if you are busy trying to protect the way that you currently do things, you are going to miss your opportunity to do something better. The three skills you will learn in this book are going to help you get there.
â??Stuart does not like the manuscript. Heâ??s after a bestseller, â??like what Tom Clancy writesâ?. â??But you are not an assassin trying to frazzle the president with anthrax bombs,â? I point out. You are an ex-homeless, ex-junkie psychopath, I do not add.â??
The winner of the Guardian First Book Award that reinvented the biographic form. One of the ten books – novels, memoirs and one very unusual biography – that make up our Matchbook Classics’ series, a stunningly redesigned collection of some of the best loved titles on our backlist. Stuart: A Life Backwards expanded the possibilities of what a biography could be: the stories it could tell, and how it could tell them. It is about a remarkable friendship between a reclusive writer (‘a middle-class scum ponce, if you want to be honest about it, Alexander’), and Stuart Shorter, a thief, hostage-taker, psycho and street raconteur. Told backwards – Stuart’s idea – it starts with a deeply troubled thirty-two-year-old stepping out in front of the 11.15 train from London to King’s Lynn, and ends with a ‘happy-go-lucky little boy’ of twelve. Compelling, humane and funny, it is as extraordinary and unexpected as the life it describes.
Explore the life and early times of Stuart, Florida through the lens of vintage images. On the southeast coast of Florida in the 1880s, a quaint little community was nestled along the tranquil waters of the St. Lucie River in a wilderness of tropical beauty, one of the region's last frontiers. As lucrative pineapple crops and the commercial fishing industry began to flourish, trade boats brought necessary supplies, and new settlers arrived on river steamers. With land available for homesteading or for sale at $1.25 an acre, the small village soon to be known as Stuart would become a mecca for innovative, hardworking young men seeking business and financial opportunities. By the dawn of the 20th century, the railroad had been established, and the town, forged by the fortitude of early pioneers, thrived, eventually becoming a beautiful, friendly incorporated city.
