Researching the English Reformation: Essays in Honour of W.B. Patterson
Researching the Reformation studies the history and historiography of early Anglicanism in order to pay tribute to the scholarship of W. Brown Patterson. Three of the volume's sections are inspired by Patterson's research monographs. The first taking its cue from Patterson's study of Thomas Fuller, analyses the intersection of mythology and historiography surrounding the English Reformation. The second, following Patterson's study of William Perkins, turns to the general theological and political contours of early modern England. The third pans out in both geography and chronology, thus emulating Patterson's award-winning study of King James VI and I. The fourth and final section analyses how, in the nineteenth century, the early modern period was reinvented by the Parker Society and the Oxford Movement. Contributors are: Benjamin M. Guyer, William E. Engel, George Core, George Poe, Diarmaid MacCulloch, Anthony Milton, James Ross MacDonald, Scott Kindred-Barnes, Paul Dominiak, David Neelands, John N. Wall, Torrance Kirby, Margo Todd, Nicholas Tyacke, Lori Anne Ferrell, and Peter Nockles.
The Circle Goes Unbroken (Revised 2015 B&w): Some of Rev. Guy Smith's Descendants and Their Kin on America's Frontiers
Some of the descendants of Rev. Guy Smith (1675-1720) and their kin on America's frontier. These families include, among others, those of Col. Richard Callaway (1717-1780), Haynie Armstrong Gilliiland (1811-1864), James Hennigan (1811-1876), John S. Jones (1812-1870), Abram A. McCain (1826-1867), William McClellan (1748-1800), William Parks (1808-1881), Alexander Jefferson Patrick (1794-1872), Guy Patterson (1887-1976). Bowker Smith (1723-1768), Bird Smith (1761-1815), Col. John Smith (1701-1775), and Stephen Trigg (1742-1782). Narrative of historical events within these families; family group charts; many documents, military rosters and letters.
A Scots-Irish Migration (Revised 2015 B&w): The Gillilands - From King's Mountain to East Texas
The Gillilands were a typical southern Scot-Irish family but at the same time they were also unique. They lived American history from the memorable Battle of King's Mountain during the American Revolution, where John Gilliland and the other 'Over the Mountain Boys' helped thwart the British invasion of the southeastern colonies, to the War of 1812 where Eli Gilliland served with the later famous David Crockett, a sergeant in Eli's company, to the Texas Revolution in 1836 where James Eli Gilliland participated in the San Antonio Expedition, the opening salvo of the fight for independence. The Gillilands, like other Scot-Irish families, suffered illnesses, the death of family members and other events which tested their minds and souls, but they continued seeking economic opportunities for themselves and for their families and determining their own destinies. The future would bring trying times for the Gillilands, as they were beset by more deaths, Comanche and Kiowa Indians, varying and sometimes brutal weather and a devastating war, but although they were buffeted by the winds of history, they, like their forebears, adapted and maintained their family culture

William Perkins and the Making of Protestant England presents a new interpretation of the theology and historical significance of William Perkins (1558-1602), a prominent Cambridge scholar and teacher during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Though often described as a Puritan, Perkins was in fact a prominent and effective apologist for the established church whose contributions to English religious thought had an immense influence on an English Protestant culture that endured well into modern times. The English Reformation is shown to be a part of the European-wide Reformation, and Perkins himself a leading Reformed theologian. In A Reformed Catholike (1597), Perkins distinguished the theology upheld in the English Church from that of the Roman Catholic Church, while at the same time showing the considerable extent to which the two churches shared common concerns. His books dealt extensively with the nature of salvation and the need to follow a moral way of life. Perkins wrote pioneering works on conscience and 'practical divinity'. In The Arte of Prophecying (1607), he provided preachers with a guidebook to the study of the Bible and their oral presentation of its teachings. He dealt boldly and in down-to-earth terms with the need to achieve social justice in an era of severe economic distress. Perkins is shown to have been instrumental to the making of a Protestant England, and to have contributed significantly to the development of the religious culture not only of Britain but also of a broad range of countries on the Continent.

Long considered a highly distinctive English writer, Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) has not been treated as the significant historian he was. Fuller's The Church-History of Britain (1655) was the first comprehensive history of Christianity from antiquity to the upheavals of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations and the tumultuous events of the English civil wars. His numerous publications outside the genre of history--sermons, meditations, pamphlets on current thought and events--reflected and helped to shape public opinion during the revolutionary era in which he lived. Thomas Fuller: Discovering England's Religious Past highlights the fact that Fuller was a major contributor to the flowering of historical writing in early modern England. W. B. Patterson provides both a biography of Thomas Fuller's life and career in the midst of the most wrenching changes his country had ever experienced and a critical account of the origins, growth, and achievements of a new kind of history in England, a process to which he made a significant and original contribution. The volume begins with a substantial introduction dealing with memory, uses of the past, and the new history of England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Fuller was moved by the changes in Church and state that came during the civil wars that led to the trial and execution of King Charles I and to the Interregnum that followed. He sought to revive the memory of the English past, recalling the successes and failures of both distant and recent events. The book illuminates Fuller's focus on history as a means of understanding the present as well as the past, and on religion and its important place in English culture and society.

This book shows King James VI and I, king of Scotland and England, in an unaccustomed light. Long regarded as inept, pedantic, and whimsical, James is shown here as an astute and far-sighted statesman whose reign was focused on achieving a permanent union between his two kingdoms and a peaceful and stable community of nations throughout Europe.

The Physics of Glaciers, Fourth Edition, discusses the physical principles that underlie the behavior and characteristics of glaciers. The term glacier refers to all bodies of ice created by the accumulation of snowfall, e.g., mountain glaciers, ice caps, continental ice sheets, and ice shelves. Glaciology—the study of all forms of ice—is an interdisciplinary field encompassing physics, geology, atmospheric science, mathematics, and others. This book covers various aspects of glacier studies, including the transformation of snow to ice, grain-scale structures and ice deformation, mass exchange processes, glacial hydrology, glacier flow, and the impact of climate change. The present edition features two new chapters: “Ice Sheets and the Earth System? and “Ice, Sea Level, and Contemporary Climate Change.? The chapter on ice core studies has been updated from the previous version with new material. The materials on the flow of mountain glaciers, ice sheets, ice streams, and ice shelves have been combined into a single chapter entitled “The Flow of Ice Masses.?
