Priesthood is open to men only. It's been that way for centuries in the Catholic church and is often referred to as a vocation...a special calling by God himself. But men are not perfect. Like the first apostles, they are flawed human beings, and can succumb to temptation. They can seek forgiveness, be sincere in their determination to sin no more, and receive absolution...like all of us humans. But then a secondary temptation may emerge: the cover up.Meet the friends who went through the seminary together and have known each other for twenty years. They are musically talented and meet each month for the sheer enjoyment of making music. They play on occasion for charity functions to the delight of parishioners. None were for pay until now. This venue is much different. They are asked to do a favor for a friend and fill in for a band of musicians who unexpectedly canceled their slot in a Manhattan nightclub. It leads to three consecutive Fridays, their clerical status a secret. The lead singer, Father David Bell, is captivated by a female fan, Susie, and after the third Friday performance, the two rendezvous for a cocktail and end up in bed. On the 2AM drive back from Brooklyn to Dave's parked car in Manhattan, Susie hits a pedestrian. The street is deserted, and David and Susie rationalize the decision to flee the scene. David and Susie both have reasons for concealing their involvement and agree that they can call for help once they return to Manhattan. David alerts 9-1-1 but he doesn't provide his name. He justifies this decision as protecting the church from embarrassment should the truth get out.Law enforcement tracks Father David Bell via his cell phone. After face-to-face interrogation, Dave admits that he was near the scene of the accident that morning, with a woman. He confesses to breaking his vow of celibacy but says that the screech of tires came from behind. The driver of that vehicle stopped so Dave and his companion kept going, under the assumption that an animal ran into the driver's path. He claimed that he had second thoughts when they got back to Manhattan and dialed 9-1-1. The detectives are not convinced, and mention that they can examine cameras located around the tunnel into Manhattan.Days later, Dave faces extortion attempts. First, Susie pays a reputed Russian mobster to have her car disappear and fabricates a report of theft. She learns that David Bell is a priest and asks him to share the expense. The Russian mobster does his own investigation and realizes that blackmail of a Catholic priest would be simple and low risk. Finally, the homeless man's cousin overhears Dave at the hospital asking the sedated patient for forgiveness and puts two and two together.Father Bell continues to think he can lie his way out of this mess, even as his plan is unraveling. His brother's unexpected death is the wake-up call. David shares the truth with his bishop, his family, and his friends, along with a plan to make amends. In so doing, he unwittingly makes them a party to the cover up.And then there's Clare, his brother's wife. He has loved her since the day of his ordination, a twenty-year friendship. A temptation not to be acted upon...again.
The U.s. Government Response To Terrorism
This book examines the organizational problems faced by the U.S. government in developing an effective strategy to counter terrorism and presents a detailed history of U.S. counter-terrorist policy since 1972. Dr. Farrell offers a working definition of terrorism, reviews its international, transnational, nonterritorial, and domestic forms, then focuses on the activities of those U.S. government agencies directly concerned with the prevention or neutralization of terrorism Critical of existing programs and of the fact that counter-terrorist activities seem to have a low priority among the duties of the relevant agencies' key executives, he concludes that the development of a clear, reasonable, and effective strategy against terrorism has been unnecessarily delayed. He is doubtful whether, even now, a satisfactory arrangement has been achieved. Beyond looking strictly at governmental agency responses to terrorism, Dr. Farrell considers the sociological, legal, and operational factors that would be brought into play should military forces be employed to quell a terrorist attack and also addresses the nature and extent of the terrorist threat to U.S. businesses.

This collection begins with Dr William Cobb. Not much is known of William Cobb. No one seems to know where he came from or if he had any formal training as a doctor. At age 42, he married Elizabeth Morrison in Greenbrier County Virginia. Was this a second marriage? Dr. Cobb was the first Doctor along the Elk River in Kanawha County, Virginia. No evidence has been found that William Cobb has ANY formal training. It is possible he served as an apprentice under the guidance of another doctor. No information has been found before his marriage to Elizabeth Morrison in 1787. It's as if he fell from th sky and landed in Greenbrier County, Virginia. This interesting name, variations of which are Cobbe, Cobb, Cobson, and Copson, is of early medieval English origin, and is an example of the many early surnames that were gradually created during the Middle Ages from the habitual use of a nickname. In this instance, the nickname, or by name, recorded in Cornwall in 1201 as "Cobba", derives from a term meaning "lump", found in both Olde English and Old Norse, and used to denote a large, well built, impressive man. The equivalent byname in Old Norse is recorded as "Kobbi", and the examples of the surname Cobb or Cobbe found in the eastern counties of England are probably derived from this source. In some cases, the surname may represent a short form of the male personal name "Jacob", from the Hebrew "Yaakov", which is traditionally held to mean "he supplanted", from the biblical story of Esau and Jacob. One Joseph Cobb was an early emigrant to the American colonies; he is recorded as a resident of Elizabeth City in Virginia in 1635, having arrived on the "Treasoror" in 1613. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Leuric Cobbe, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Essex, during the reign of King William 1, known as "William the Conqueror", 1066 - 1087. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.Read more: http: //www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Cobb#ixzz3HS7o54ep
