Normal and pathologic growth is one of the most intensively studied yet challenging areas in pathology. Thus the individual volumes in this series focus on the topics of highest scientific interest for basic and clinical researchers, pathologists, medical and surgical oncologists and allied multidisciplinary teams interested in the study of these aspects of neoplastic growth, progression and inhibition. The range of topics covered is extensive, including but not limited to autonomous growth characteristics of malignancy, phenomena of progression of malignant growth involving the various body systems, and recent advances being made in successful neoplastic inhibition and control. Cell function may be described as producing progression or regression, often found as alternating features in tumors or as variations between normal tissues and tumors. The source of regression in normal melanin producing cells may not be the same as in melanomas. These functions of living matter persist in all phyla of eumetazoans vascular plants as well as in particular species of fungi. However, homo sapiens are the eumetazoan species, which interest us the most. Normal growth processes cannot be entirely understood in all its diversity until we have a thorough knowledge of what constitutes normal growth in various organisms.

Like the geological treasures that surely must lie below the Athabasca glacier, some of the answers to key questions about the control of respiration remain buried. But bit by bit, year by year the ice is melting and perhaps in some areas the rocks are starting to be revealed. With a mission to advance our understanding of the emerging th th gems of respiration, the X Oxford Conference was held between 19–24 September (2006) next to the turquoise and tranquil waters of Lake Louise, in the middle of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Since its inauguration 30 years ago in Oxford, the Oxford Conference on mo- ling and control of breathing has been held every three years in locations spanning the globe (a list of past conferences and publications that have emerged is included in the pages that follow). The series has provided key opportunities for respiratory scientists to meet with colleagues, discuss recent advances and celebrate their field. The 2006 Lake Louise meeting was Canada’s second Oxford Conference; the th previous Canadian meeting (the VII Oxford Conference) was held in 1997 at the Grandview Inn in Huntsville (Ontario) and was chaired by Richard Hughson, David Cunningham and Jim Duffin.

In the late 1980s, it became painfully evident to the pharmaceutical industry that the old paradigm of drug discovery, which involved highly segmented drug - sign and development activities, would not produce an acceptable success rate in the future. Therefore, in the early 1990s a paradigm shift occurred in which drug design and development activities became more highly integrated. This new str- egy required medicinal chemists to design drug candidates with structural f- tures that optimized pharmacological (e. g. , high affinity and specificity for the target receptor), pharmaceutical (e. g. , solubility and chemical stability), bioph- maceutical (e. g. , cell membrane permeability), and metabolic/pharmacokinetic (e. g. , metabolic stability, clearance, and protein binding) properties. Successful implementation of this strategy requires a multidisciplinary team effort, incl- ing scientists from drug design (e. g. , medicinal chemists, cell biologists, en- mologists, pharmacologists) and drug development (e. g. , analytical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, physiologists, and molecular biologists representing the disciplines of pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics/drug metabolism). With this new, highly integrated approach to drug design now widely utilized by the pharmaceutical industry, the editors of this book have provided the sci- tific community with case histories to illustrate the nature of the interdisciplinary interactions necessary to successfully implement this new approach to drug d- covery. In the first chapter, Ralph Hirschmann provides a historical perspective of why this paradigm shift in drug discovery has occurred.

This book informs readers of the needs and rationale for the integration of medical and dental care and information with an international perspective as to how and where medical and dental care separated into specific domains. A patient typically expects that a visit to a dentist can usually be resolved immediately. This expectation places a premium on instant, accurate, thorough, and current information. The state-of-the-art of fully integrated (dental-medical) electronic health record (EHR) is covered and this is contrasted with the current state of dental-medical software. While dentists in the US Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the US Indian Health Service (IHS), or the US military, for example, have access to fully integrated health records, most US clinicians still gather information from separate sources via fax or phone calls. The authors provide an in-depth discussion of the role of informatics and information science in the articulation of medical and dental practices and clinical data with the focus on applied clinical informatics to improve quality of care, practice efficiency, coordination and continuity of care, communication between physicians and dentists and to provide a more comprehensive care for the patients. It is a distinct pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce Professor Malliavin's book to the English-speaking mathematical world. In recent years there has been a noticeable retreat from the level of ab­ straction at which graduate-level courses in analysis were previously taught in the United States and elsewhere. In contrast to the practices used in the 1950s and 1960s, when great emphasis was placed on the most general context for integration and operator theory, we have recently witnessed an increased emphasis on detailed discussion of integration over Euclidean space and related problems in probability theory, harmonic analysis, and partial differential equations. Professor Malliavin is uniquely qualified to introduce the student to anal­ ysis with the proper mix of abstract theories and concrete problems. His mathematical career includes many notable contributions to harmonic anal­ ysis, complex analysis, and related problems in probability theory and par­ tial differential equations. Rather than developed as a thing-in-itself, the abstract approach serves as a context into which special models can be couched. For example, the general theory of integration is developed at an abstract level, and only then specialized to discuss the Lebesgue measure and integral on the real line. Another important area is the entire theory of probability, where we prefer to have the abstract model in mind, with no other specialization than total unit mass. Generally, we learn to work at an abstract level so that we can specialize when appropriate.

Overview Recent years have seen an increasing interest in the development of multi-sensory robot systems. The reason for this interest stems from a realization that there are fundamental limitations on the reconstruction of environment descriptions using only a single source of sensor information. If robot systems are ever to achieve a degree of intelligence and autonomy, they must be capable of using many different sources of sensory information in an active and dynamic manner. The observations made by the different sensors of a multi-sensor system are always uncertain, usually partial, occasionally spuri9us or incorrect and often geographically or geometrically imcomparable with other sensor views. The sensors of these systems are characterized by the diversity of information that they can provide and by the complexity of their operation. It is the goal of a multi­ sensor system to combine information from all these different sources into a robust and consistent description of the environment.
