Reading in a Second Language sets the testing and teaching of reading against a theoretical background, discussing research from both applied linguistics and cognitive psychology. Where possible, it focuses on research into second language readers and distinguishes different kinds of reading, particularly expeditious as opposed to careful reading, and emphasizes the validity of each.Sandy Urquhart and Cyril Weir relate testing and teaching, discussing similarities and differences, providing a comprehensive survey of both methods with the emphasis on those which have been substantiated or supported by research evidence. Finally, the book proposes specific research topics, and detailed advice on how to construct tests of language for academic purposes and suggestions for further research.
A History of Rome from 133 B.C. to 70 A.D. (1904)
First published in 1904, this volume began what was to be the magnum opus of the highly regarded Classical scholar, A.H.J. Greenidge. Though published posthumously, the work stands alone as a valuable contribution to Classical history. Beginning with a socioeconomic history which exposes the conditions preceding and determining the great conflict of interests to follow, Greenidge then explores the story of Rome from Scipio Aemilianus and the Gracchi brothers until the second election of Marius to the consulship.

Structure and Process in a Melanesian Society

Structure and Process in a Melanesian Society

First Published in 1991. In the 1980s many anthropologists rejected the classic concern with the structure and logic of social organisation and embraced instead a concern with process, with the fluidity of events and individual strategy. Through its analysis of a Melanesian society and the ways it has changed in the twentieth century this book addresses the relationship between the classic structural approach and the more recent processual one. The society analysed is Ponam, located on a small island in Papua New Guinea. The book describes Ponam kinship and ceremonial exchange, and so compliments the authors’' analysis of Onam economic organisation in 'Wage, Tarde and Exchange in Melanesia'. Like its companion volume, this book locates Ponanm in its broader social, political and economic environment.
