साहस, शौर्य, नेतृत्व, कर्मठता, वीरता, निर्भयता-किसी एक व्यक्ति में इन सबका समुच्चय होना कठिन होता है, लगभग दुर्लभ। परंतु भारत में शौर्य के प्रतीक हैं हमारे राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सलाहकार श्री अजीत डोभाल। वह भारतीय पुलिस सेवा के सबसे सम्मानित अधिकारियों में से एक हैं। 'परम वीर चक्र' के बाद दूसरा सर्वोच्च वीरता पुरस्कार ' कीर्ति चक्र' पानेवाले पहले पुलिस अधिकारी हैं। उन्होंने अनेक कठिन और खतरों से भरे हुए ऑपरेशंस का सफल संचालन व नेतृत्व कर भारतवर्ष की अखंडता को अक्षुण्ण रखने में अप्रतिम योगदान दिया है। उन्होंने मिजोरम विद्रोह में एक फील्ड ऑपरेटिव के रूप में नाम कमाया, जहाँ उन्होंने विद्रोही नेता लालडेंगा को काबू किया। सन्] 1989 में उन्होंने अमृतसर में स्वर्ण मंदिर से आतंकवादियों को निकालने के लिए ' ऑपरेशन ब्लैक थंडर' में पंजाब पुलिस एवं राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा गार्ड के साथ एक आई.बी. टीम का नेतृत्व किया। भारत में इसलामी आतंकवाद के खिलाफ महत्त्वपूर्ण अभियानों को उन्होंने दिशा दी और सन्] 1993 में मुंबई बम धमाकों के बाद अंडरवर्ल्ड गैंगस्टर दाऊद इब्राहिम को पकड़ने के लिए बनाई गई टीम का नेतृत्व भी किया। 1999 में एयर इंडिया की फ्लाइट को अपहत करके कंधार लेकर गए आतंकियों से यात्रियों की रिहाई के लिए हुई वार्त्ता के भी वह हिस्सा रहे। सर्जिकल स्ट्राइक, डोकलाम विवाद, अनुच्छेद 370 हटने के बाद कश्मीर में हालात पर नियंत्रण, म्याँमार में सैन्य ऑपरेशन इत्यादि जैसे दर्जनों साहसिक अभियान उनके नाम हैं। राष्ट्र की सुरक्षा और सम्मान को सर्वोपरि माननेवाले, दृढ़ एवं कठोर निर्णय लेने में किंचित्] न झिझकने वाले, अजीत डोभालजी की यह प्रेरक जीवनी उनके समर्पित राष्ट्र- जीवन की एक झलक मात्र है।

Gendering the ?adith Tradition presents for the first time a partial translation and study of Imam Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi's work, al-Ijaba li-Iradi ma Istadraktahu Aisha Ala al-Sahabah-The Corrective: Aisha's Rectification of the Companions. It critically analyses from the perspective of hadith criticism a number of sections presenting Aisha's refutations and corrections of key Companions including, Umar b. al-Khattab, Abdullah b. Abbas, Zayd b. Thabit, and Abu Hurayra, applying classical hadith methodology to the scrutiny of narrators by way of impugnment and validation (al-jarh wa al-tadil) in an effort to re-construct and re-present Aisha as a central authority in Islamic knowledge production. This work constitutes a major rethinking of the Muslim hadith and jurisprudential traditions by evaluating how Aisha responded to hadiths that were circulating and being ascribed, often incorrectly, as authoritative statements of the Prophet Muhammad. From her critique of overwhelmingly male Companions of the Prophet, the study elicits a methodology for hadith criticism which is sure to challenge classical approaches. Sofia Rehman unearths the scholarly acumen of this great female Companion and mother of the believers, in her discussion of several legal positions which Aisha held in contradistinction to many of the male authorities among the Companions. This interdisciplinary study serves as a model for how the voice of Aisha may be given renewed life and significance in the way it re-centres her traditions and thinking. A crucial aspect is its contributing to expanding the horizons of multiple Islamic disciplines. A major contribution to the study of hadith lies in the development of an emergent methodology of Aisha in the scrutiny of the actual statements (matn) of traditions, not just the chains of transmission (isnad). The contributions of this study to the development of the Muslim legal tradition (fiqh) also lies in a framework that emerges from this research based on the pattern of how Aisha approaches juridical matters. The implications for this are many, especially regarding women and their spiritual and daily life and practice.

This encyclopedic work on Islam comprises English translations of all canonical ?adiths, complete with their respective chains of transmission (isnads). By conflating the variant versions of the same ?adith, the repetitiveness of its literature has been kept wherever possible to a minimum. The latest methods of isnad analysis, described in the general introduction, have been employed in an attempt to identify the person(s) responsible for each ?adith. The book is organized in the alphabetical order of those persons. These are the so-called ‘common links’. Each of them is listed with the tradition(s) for the wording of which he can be held accountable, or with which he can at least be associated. Within each article, the traditions are referred to in bold figures in the numerical order as they were distilled from the more than 19,000 isnads listed in Tu?fat al-ashraf bi ma?rifat al-a?raf by the Syrian ?adith scholar Yusuf b. ?Abd ar-Ra?man al-Mizzi (d. 742/1341). Medieval commentaries as well as assorted biographical lexicons were drawn upon to illustrate the text of each tradition in all theological, social, legal and other noteworthy aspects discernible in it. Thus no details of eschatology, superstitions, miraculous phenomena, Jahili practices etc. were left without the clarifying comments of contemporary and later theologians, historians and ?adith experts culled from such works as the Fat? al-bari, a major commentary of Bukhari’s ?a?i? by Ibn ?ajar al-?Asqalani (d. 852/1448) or the commentary by Ya?ya b. Sharaf an-Nawawi (d. 676/1277) of the ?a?i? of Muslim b. al-?ajjaj. The encyclopedia concludes with an exhaustive index and glossary of names and concepts, which functions at the same time as a concordance. In short, this work presents an indispensable sourcebook of the development of Islam in all its facets during the first three centuries since its foundation as reflected in canonical ?adith.
These two authentic texts, which include Islamic law topics and ?adith of the Prophet, date from the last quarter of the 7th/1st century. As typical examples of the early Islamic literary style employed in writings about the Islamic jurisprudence and the way in which the isnads and matns (transmitters and content- main bodies of the ?adith) are recorded, they offer present-day researchers in those fields an illustration of the way in which the ?adith were narrated during that period. Noteworthy, van Ess’s hypothesis about these texts holds plausible accuracy and helping to traces Ibadi ancestor in Basra down to early two decades of 3rd/9th century. It shows a vertically progress of the early Islamic law schools in Iraq within the regional perspective.
