Power Theory of Economics

Power Theory of Economics

Yasuma Takata; trans Douglas W Anthony

Palgrave Macmillan

Yasuma Takata (1883-1971), nicknamed 'the Japanese Marshall' by Martin Bronfenbrenner, dominated sociology and then economics in Japan over a long period. In sociology he was known through his articles published in German, whilst as economist he remained rather unknown in the West, despite his work along the line connecting Walras, Bohm-Bawerk, Wicksell and Keynes. His scope is so wide as to view Marx critically and accommodate Veblen, Pareto, Schumpeter. Accepting the orthodox economic theory as a first approximation, he tried to introduce institutional factors and power relationships as a second approximation. This volume is edited so as to represent a synthesis of his economics and sociology.

F.W. Harvey: Soldier, Poet

F.W. Harvey: Soldier, Poet

F.W. Harvey was one of a generation whose lives were splintered by the First World War, and one of that group of war poets for whom the war changed everything. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment only days after war was declared, and was among the first Territorials to land in France. As a Lance-Corporal he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for ‘conspicuous gallantry’ and was commissioned shortly afterwards. He survived the Somme offensive but in August 1916 was captured by the Germans while reconnoitring alone behind enemy lines. He spent the rest of the war in p-o-w camps. But Harvey was more than just a tough soldier. A contemporary of Sassoon, Brooke and Thomas – and with Ivor Gurney his closest friend – he wanted nothing more when ‘at rest’ than an interval of quiet in which to set down in verse his longing for his Gloucestershire homeland, his outrage at the waste of war, his joy in comradeship, his humour and his unflinching faith. This biography contains many of the poems, including the world-famous ‘Ducks’, and is illustrated with a wealth of contemporary photographs

Anthony Burgess and America is a biographical and critical analysis of Burgess’s commentary on and relationship with the United States of America.Utilising Burgess’s entire canon and newly discovered materials to assess Burgess’s views on America, this book also evaluates the American inspirations in five Burgess novels. This essential addition to Burgess scholarship tells the story of a nearly unexplored area of Burgess’s life. For the first time ever, Burgess’s American experiences, work, and documented communication, lectures, interviews and public utterances are brought together to assess where these commentaries overlapped with his fiction. The result is a complex personal and public history about one of Britain’s greatest twentieth century authors and their immersion into and interaction with American culture in the second half of the twentieth century.

Anthony Benjamin Cosenza

Dr. Cosenza's fifth book presents startling spiritual keys to identifying the true spiritual sources of all crises in individuals, groups, communities and countries. His timely biblical research study of the Greek word, krisis and its derivatives, carefully unfolds significant spiritual types of crises (krisis), ten subtypes, and their effective solutions. In w.w.w.krisis/intervention, Dr. Cosenza rigorously contends that the underlying answers to all crises are found mainly in the spiritual realm. Systematically, he explores three salient biblical ideas: (1) our spiritual understanding of what and who we worship, (2) our spiritual consciousness of the Word of God ("Word-ship"), and (3) our true spiritual sense of worthiness ("worth-ship"). Dr. Cosenza's provocative research on krisis intervention offers a spiritually balanced and harmonizing approach to worldly conceptions and deceptions of crises.

Robert W. Tebbs, Photographer to Architects

Robert W. Tebbs, Photographer to Architects

One of the finest architectural photographers in America, Robert W. Tebbs produced the first photographic survey of Louisiana's plantations in 1926. From those images, now housed in the Louisiana State Museum, and not widely available until now, 119 plates showcasing fifty-two homes are featured here. Richard Anthony Lewis explores Tebbs's life and career, situating his work along the line of plantation imagery from nineteenth-century woodcuts and paintings to later twentieth-century photographs by John Clarence Laughlin, among others. Providing the family lineage and construction history of each home, Lewis discusses photographic techniques Tebbs used in his alternating panoramic and detail views. A precise documentarian, Tebbs also reveals a poetic sensibility in the plantation photos. His frequent emphasis on aspects of decay, neglect, incompleteness, and loss lends a wistful aura to many of the images -- an effect compounded by the fact that many of the homes no longer exist. This noticeable vacillation between objectivity and sentiment, Lewis shows, suggests unfamiliarity and even discomfort with the legacy of slavery. Poised on the brink of social and political reforms, Louisiana in the mid-1920s had made significant strides away from the slave-based agricultural economy that the plantation house often symbolized. Tebbs's Louisiana plantation photographs capture a literal and cultural past, reflecting a burgeoning national awareness of historic preservation and presenting plantations to us anew. Select plantations included: Ashland/Belle Helene, Avery Island, Belle Chasse, Belmont, Butler-Greenwood, L'Hermitage, Oak Alley, Parlange, René Beauregard House, Rosedown, Seven Oaks, Shadows-on-the-Teche, The Shades, and Waverly.
