Francis Edward Bache (1833–58) and his younger brother Walter (1842–88) were active during a rich period of musical life in Britain. The Philharmonic Society and Crystal Palace concerts in London, the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, and the Birmingham and Three Choirs festivals were all well established, while celebrated composer/conductors from Berlioz to Wagner and virtuosi including violinist Joseph Joachim and pianist Anton Rubinstein were in great demand. Edward, a pupil of Sterndale Bennett, was a promising organist and composer whose potential was tragically ended by his early death from tuberculosis. Walter, a pupil of Liszt from 1862 to 1865, became a dedicated promoter of the pianist/composer's music to the British concert-going public through annual concerts that he financed. First published in 1901, this affectionate account of the brothers' lives by their sister Constance (1846–1903) includes many letters as well as lists of Edward's compositions and Liszt's orchestral works performed at Walter's concerts.

A major figure among pre-World War I psychoanalysts, Victor Tausk was perhaps Sigmund Freud's most brilliant pupil "the most prominently out-standing" in the opinion of Lou Andreas-Salome. Tausk craved recognition for the originality of his work, and a fierce rivalry developed between pupil and mentor. Tausk, who felt a deep and neurotic dependence on Freud, was totally consumed in the struggle. Freud's final rejection of his follower, and the particularly unfortunate manner in which it was carried out, was followed by Tausk's bizarre suicide and by an official silence that has all but obliterated his name from the annals of psychoanalysis.Arthur Koestler called Brother Animal "A very important and original contribution to the history of the psychoanalytic movement and beyond that to the history of ideas," and Maxwell Geismar said it was "the best treatment of Freud and that remarkable group of his original disciples that 1 have read. It reads as if Mr. Roazen was right there at the time, inside the inner circle."

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2025 by the Los Angeles Times, Town & Country, and Alta"Flores's style has an exhilarating punk, D.I.Y. aplomb; it's as if he feels he's inventing literature for the first time." --Mark Leyner, The New York Times Book Review "Flores's fiction possesses the aspect of a dream." --David L. Ulin, The Atlantic "This crazy, cakey world-making of Fernando A. Flores is all of literature: wide, plaintive, melancholy, and full of feminist fellow joyousness and ways . . . Hated this world ending. I want more." --Eileen Myles Two women fight to save their dystopian border town--and literature--in this gonzo near-future adventure. The year is 2038, and the formerly bustling town of Three Rivers, Texas, is a surreal wasteland. Under the authoritarian thumb of its tech industrialist mayor, Pablo Henry Crick, the town has outlawed reading and forced most of its mothers to work as indentured laborers at the Big Tex Fish Cannery, which poisons the atmosphere and lines Crick's pockets. Scraping by in this godforsaken landscape are best friends Proserpina and Neftal . One of Three Rivers' last literate citizens, Neftal hides and reads the books of the mysterious renegade author Jazzmin Monelle Rivas, whose last novel, Brother Bront , is finally in Neftal 's possession. But after a series of increasingly violent atrocities committed by Crick's forces, Neftal and Proserpina, with the help of a wounded Bengal tigress, three scheming triplets, and an underground network of rebel t as, rise up to reclaim their city--and in the process, unlock Rivas's connection to Three Rivers itself. An adventure that only the acclaimed Fernando A. Flores could dream up, Brother Bront is a mordant, gonzo romp through a ruined world that, in its dysfunction, tyranny, and disparity, feels uncannily like our own. With his most ambitious book yet, Flores once again bends what fiction can do, in the process crafting a moving and unforgettable story of perseverance.
