Selected by Aimee Nezhukumatathil as the winner of the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize, Danni Quintos carves a space for brown girls and weird girls in her debut collection of poems. Two Brown Dots explores what it means to be a racially ambiguous, multiethnic, Asian American woman growing up in Kentucky. In stark, honest poems, Quintos recounts the messiness and confusion of being a typical ‘90s kid—watching Dirty Dancing at sleepovers, borrowing eye shadow out of a friend’s caboodle, crushing on a boy wearing khaki shorts to Sunday mass—while navigating the microagressions of the neighbor kids, the awkwardness of puberty, and the casual cruelties of fellow teenagers. The mixed-race daughter of a dark skinned Filipino immigrant, Quintos retells family stories and Phillipine folklore to try and make sense of an identity with roots on opposite sides of the globe. With clear-eyed candor and a wry sense of humor, Quintos teases the line between tokenism and representation, between assimilation and belonging, offering a potent antidote to the assumption that “American” means “white.” Encompassing a whole journey from girlhood to motherhood, Two Brown Dots subverts stereotypes to reclaim agency and pride in the realness and rawness and unprettyness of a brown girl’s body, boldly declaring: We exist, we belong, we are from here, and we will continue to be.
Blue Bayou Moon is a Louisiana based children's story book. All of the animals in this story come straight from the swamp. The moon which is shining brightly at night tells all of the swamp animals goodnight when someone unexpectedly falls asleep before everyone else.
Danni Sparks is a children's book writer. She is a mom by day and a writer by night. When she was a child, she always had trouble sleeping and was also afraid of the dark. Her inspiration was the moon and how bright it is at night. The only way she could sleep at night when she was a child was because the moon would shine through her window at night. It was her light in the darkness. And that's where she got her inspiration so every child knows that the moon will always be there when it's dark and be their light as it was for her.

Slowly I slid to the floor as I watched the policeman buckle my children into the backseat of his police car, close the door and drive away. The knock on my door had startled me as I had not been expecting anyone. As I lay on the floor contemplating taking every pill in the bottles strewn across my bathoom countertop. I opened my eyes and surveyed the disaster before me. How had this happened? Slowly getting to my feet I found the bag of unopened trash bags and sat down amidst the piles of dirty clothes, trash and dog poop. I had to at least try. It took me eight days to clean the house and get my kids back. Now my home is clean, and my children are grown. This one instance started me on the road to recovery, from victim to victory. I also worked with Children Youth and Families and to learn how to keep my house clean, pay my bills on time and become a stable, productive member of society. This is my journey of hope
