God in the Wasteland: The Reality of Truth in a World of Fading Dreams
David F. Wells's award-winning book No Place for Truth - called "a stinging indictment of evangelicalism's theological corruption" by TIME magazine - woke many evangelicals to the fact that their tradition has slowly but surely capitulated to the values and structures of modernity. In God in the Wasteland Wells continues his trenchant analysis of the cultural corruption now weakening the church's thought and witness with the intent of getting evangelicals to rethink their relationship to the "world." Wells argues that the church is enfeebled in part because it has lost its sense of God's sovereignty and holiness. "The fundamental problem in the evangelical world today," says Wells, "is that God rests too inconsequentially upon the church. His truth is too distant, his grace is too ordinary, his judgment is too benign, his gospel is too easy, and his Christ is too common." God has become weightless to the extent that the church no longer allows him to shape its character, outlook, and practice. Evangelicals have become heavily invested in the mind-set of modernity a mind-set that Wells correlates with the biblical concept of the "world." They have become enamored of advanced management and marketing techniques, have blurred the distinctions between Christ and culture, and have largely abandoned their traditional emphasis on divine transcendence in favor of an emphasis on divine immanence. In doing so, they have produced a faith in God that is of little consequence to those who believe. An extensive survey of students at seven evangelical theological seminaries - the results of which are included in this book - indicates that the next generation of evangelical leaders is as caught up in these trends as the laity. Arguing that the church's diminished appetite for truth will not be restored without repentance and a fresh encounter with the holy God, Wells makes a compelling case for urgently needed reform in the evangelical church. Without such reform, he says, evangelical faith will be lost in and to the modernity that has invaded the church.

Numerical Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations is a self-contained introduction to a fundamental field of numerical analysis and scientific computation. Written for undergraduate students with a mathematical background, this book focuses on the analysis of numerical methods without losing sight of the practical nature of the subject. It covers the topics traditionally treated in a first course, but also highlights new and emerging themes. Chapters are broken down into `lecture' sized pieces, motivated and illustrated by numerous theoretical and computational examples. Over 200 exercises are provided and these are starred according to their degree of difficulty. Solutions to all exercises are available to authorized instructors. The book covers key foundation topics: o Taylor series methods o Runge--Kutta methods o Linear multistep methods o Convergence o Stability and a range of modern themes: o Adaptive stepsize selection o Long term dynamics o Modified equations o Geometric integration o Stochastic differential equations The prerequisite of a basic university-level calculus class is assumed, although appropriate background results are also summarized in appendices. The phenomenon of burnout first became the subject of public attention in the mid-1970s. This landmark volume is one of the first devoted exclusively to theoretical and empirical work on burnout. Each valuable chapter represents the state of the art in social services research on burnout. Burnout Among Social Workers illustrates and assesses problems with definitions and theoretical orientations to help clarify the overall conceptual vagueness that has plagued burnout research since its beginning. Attention is paid to both personal and job-related variables and coping mechanisms. Expert social work academicians and researchers clearly demonstrate the importance of burnout measurement for theory and practice and establish important guidelines for subsequent research and theory development in this area.

Reforming the Health Care Market

Reforming the Health Care Market

David F. Drake

Examining the health care market in a historical framework, Drake analyzes the forces and events that have shaped American health care in the twentieth century and sheds new light on why and how our health care system has dampened competitive market forces and failed to provide sound value for much of our health care expenditures. He examines the roles that physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, businesses, individual consumers, and government legislation have played in creating a provider-dominated market in which the cost of care has been concealed from consumers. Comparing U.S. health care expenditures with those of other developed countries, he concludes that a significant part of our health care problem is the style of medicine practiced in the United States, which is much more specialized and high tech than in other developed nations. Drake develops proposals for health care financing reform that consider the political and economic difficulties involved. He first examines the Clinton health care reform plan and makes specific recommendations for revisions that would improve its likelihood of controlling costs. He then offers an alternative proposal that would both maintain the principle of universal, noncancelable coverage and eliminate the flaws in the market for health care services by giving consumers a financial stake in cost containment. This timely argument, combining economic and historical analysis with thoughtful consideration of the motivating humanitarian and political concerns, will be of interest to everyone seeking to understand and to reform our ailing health care system.

Austere Beauty is the first major survey of Vanessa Helder's life and artistic career. Born in Washington State, Helder (1904–1968) began her artistic training at the University of Washington and then relocated to New York to study at the Art Students League. She then returned to Washington to work for the WPA Federal Art Project at the Spokane Art Center. In 1943 she relocated to Los Angeles, where she became deeply involved in the local art scene and the California Watercolor Society, for the remainder of her career. Helder's exhibition history encompassed not only regional museums and galleries but also stretched throughout the country, most notably her inclusion in the American Realists and Magic Realists exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1943. Her career spanned several periods of major change in American art, from the advent of modernism in the early part of the 20th century to the rise of abstraction in the post-war years. Her unique personal style was a hybrid of traditional and modern ideas -- she worked primarily in watercolor, creating works that radiate clear color and showing a rare talent for tightly controlling a medium known for its fluidity and soft, blurry line.

Shattering the Gods Within

Shattering the Gods Within

David F. Allen

In this book, the second edition of the second book of his classic trilogy, renowned Christian psychotherapist, Dr. David F. Allen, teaches us about the many false gods that are waiting to be raised up as deities within us. We learn how to identify them and how they must be shattered so that we ultimately find our way into the worship of the true God. The starting point in this journey is understanding this important truth: Life is wounded. This principle is the underlying explanation for our constant creation of false gods. Unmanageable, unbearable and seemingly inescapable pain is the reason we are forever shoving our faith aside and granting god-like status to both our pleasures and our problems. Life is wounded and in this book Dr. Allen helps the reader understand the inextricable connection between our pain and our false gods. These pseudo gods are false illusions of reality; they must ultimately shatter or be shattered. The shattering may be a result of illness, disappointment, death, or some other tragedy, or God himself might explode our box of illusions. The shattering of one's pseudo gods is always painful, leaving a hole in one's soul and an emptiness of heart. We become vulnerable to depression, suicide, or other self-destructive behaviors, e.g., drugs or alcohol. But at this point of extreme vulnerability, we can also be open to true faith in God. In a Christian context, the coming of Christ the Holy Son of God is the most powerful antidote to idolatry or pseudo gods. From the opening chapters on "Life is Wounded" and "The Creation of a Pseudo God," Dr. Allen presents the reader with the false gods of modern culture: "Narcissism: The God of Self-Image""Conformity: The God of Fitting In""Materialism: The Visible God""The Sacredness of the Affect""Anger: Addiction and Sexuality""Extraordinary Illusions""Facing the Wounded Self"But the reader is not left in despair. Out of more than four decades as a psychiatrist and a lifetime of understanding human nature through the stories in the Holy Scriptures, Dr. Allen brings hope in: "Broken Idols: Coping with Defeat" and "Facing Giants: Character Amidst Chaos"Ultimately, with Dr. Allen as our guide, we are lead to God's "Forgiveness: The Healing Grace" having made the journey "From Wounds to Worship
